Lynn thanks for the kind comments, it is really down to Tiger being a reformed feral and us for never getting a long lie again as he is on 7am and 7pm so another furbabe takes over our lives and we just need to plan the whole routine around him and the others and folks wonder why we don't go out much!!!!

Well he goes from strength to strength and is being so good taking his inections and neith parent has been shredded recently!

He gets extra treats to aid the process and is putting on a little weight and generally being a big purr boy, the others are all having a grounded day today so he feels happier that he's not the only one missing out on the big wide world!

He has his full day at the vets on Monday 3 December 2007 to see if the insulin needs to be upped so fingers crossed then he can get back out on to his patch and be our happy stumpy boy again!

Just to say Tiger and daddy had a good vets visit and he has put on 0.1 of a Kg sinve last Wednesday and is a lot brighter in himself and showed me the back door this morning!

He is off for the full day Blood monitoring on Monday 3 Devember so that will give us his curve and hopefully get the doseage set for a while anyway.

Vet went and read his notes going back to the eral days and couldn't beleive that the big purr boy on the table spent the first 5 years of his life being knocked out for injections due to his nasty nature then, now he takles the needle and is a poppet but I still remeber my 3 broken fingers and how I got the bathrppm redecorated the month after I trapped him due to his wall of death and shredding!

Will keep this updated as the journey continues but our boy is bright and parent coping with needles and no more long lies!!!!

I could do if it was caused secondary to somthing else or by obesity i think, however i dont imagine that happens too often, i've certainly never experienced it with any of the cases i was involved in.

Lynn, am I right in remembering that diabetes can clear up after a while in cats? My sister (lives in Australia) had a Burmese called Ebony who developed Diabetes and died at a ripe old age some years ago. I'm pretty sure her diabetes cleared up after few years. Does that sound right?

Day 2 of Tigers shots

Well this morning went well for daddy and he has been perky after 2 shots, this evening reminded Robin he used to be a big bad feral - no claws but enough swear words to make a marine blush!!!!

The train saga meant the changed time of train to 07.50am then points failure at Dyce so tomorrow am doing Kingswells park and ride with a girl from Kemnay and its only £2.00 return!"

Its going to be an interesting ride with our former feral boy but I think the treats he gets will help and he doesn't seem to mind the needles its the scruff part he objects to!!!

You sound like your pretty much under control or atleast as much as anyone can be in this early stages and i think you are probably right about your vets aswell

:Crazy:Well the first injection is in and he was ok about it, in fact during the visit to the vets he comes out of his box, sits on my knee and starts purring much to the surprise of the other customers, he then walks back in to box when vet calls his name.

Place box on table, open door and out he walks and sits on the table as if to say of its you to the vet who took the blood test last Friday after 2 practice jabs with water home we come with insulin and needles enough to last till Monday night when he is going back for a test with his Daddy.

He is on canininsulin and we have just watched the Dvd asnd filled in the book which comes a part of the pack from the vet, have to say Lynn the vet in Inverurie is really good and we do have faith in them so will follow the rules and see how we go.

Lyn in answer to your question he has lost 2kg in weight (starting weigh 8 kgs he is a huge cat and never fat) but is bright in himself and eating for Britain as usual and everything else is ok including his coat but he is drinking quite a bit in fact I think the third water fountain may be getting plugged in just to add another water receptacle along with the 2 cat fountains, 1 dog fountain, 1 dog water bowl and the 5 other water water bowls in varying locations throughout the house

he will hopefully be stabilised by Christmas thats the vets line and his Aunty Elaine from Aberdeen is coming to give him 2 evening shots - She's Eva and Bernies Mum not forgetting the wonderful Winston so I have great faith in her and trust her as I am now back in th UK for good and have a job with M & S but will have to work a couple of 1.30pm to 9.30pm shifts during the induction period.

If the job and Robins prove unpredictabe then I will be back slaving over a computer, but have decided to have a career change and will give it a go but the boy and his needs come first and never again will we have a long lie - between Tiger and his injections and Sky needing out to play!

Tomorrow Robin is on injection duty as I am on the 07.20am train to Aberdeen!

How bad is he Liz ?

Initially stabalizing cats can be very tricky , you may need to try various insulins until the right one for him is found, also dosage takes a min to get right..then of course once your on an even keel the condition may change and what was correct dosage will change.

He may need a different diet to help even out sugar spikes and obviously regular urine and blood testing.

Normally they get regular blood glucose tests but then once every so many months should also have a "fructosamine" test which has to be sent away to the lab, this also tests sugar levels but whereas normal bl.gluc measures purely the sugar in the blood at that particular moment the fructosamine gives a longer term picture and is a better indicator of how well stabalised the patient is.

You will be able to test his urine at home with ketodiastix and we even had some patients have needle prick blood glucose taken at home via the same type of thing you can get at the chemist for humans, admittedly these were dogs as they are more complient patients.

Also go to the chemist and get some "liquid glucose" to keep in your cupboard incase of any hypo's

Its inverurie you attend isnt it ? I am sure they would be very good doing all the proper tests and getting you and tiger sorted out (and robin LOL)

Thanks for the site tips will have a look on our return - I am doing the vets tonight and Robin will go friday for the injection handbook and Tiger as well

We have only injected antibiotics in to Holly our late FIV girl and seem to do ok with that but I am needle phobic - hate them even though I give blood if I can't see it don't worry about them!

It means no difference to us he is still our rumpy stumpy boy and hope we can do all he needs and he will always get a treat after the event he does love his food so that helps - may have to ask about the cheese he gets though!

Yep, I have a little junkie! He was diagnosed just over a year ago, and getting used to giving daily injections was a bit daunting. (For me, not him. Nothing phases him!)

Hmmm....the main thing I can suggest is to make sure Tiger associates the injection with a positive. So give him a small treat after each jab. Bribery works wonders!

The needles are cheaper on VetUK than in the vets (only by a small amount in our vets though, in all fairness.) but you do have to order something else with them to be up to the minimum order amount.

Tiger is the first feral we were chosen to be parents for he has had one or two things along in his life with us including being hit by a car and loosing his tail, cut his tongue in half when OH left knife on cheese board, been given sleeping tablets instead of antibiotics - the yellow pills do work is all I'm prepared to say!

He is a delight to have a big purr boy who is the male leade of the Clan cats and has been ruled by Sweetie for nearly 10 years and has devoted followers to the pint of stalking in our next pair of tabby ferals Lima and Clio who literally worship the ground he walks on - he could do without such devotion at times!

We hope that this will just become routine for him and us with needles - and thanks for the tip Lottie will check it out!

Can't offer any advice but just want to say good luck for his treatment. Is Tiger one of the tabby ferals?

P.S:Have noticed VetUK sell insulin needles so they are probably quite a bit cheaper than the vets sell them for.

Our Tiger has just been diagnosed as diabetic - it was a toss up between that and Thyroid issues but diabetes won

Has anyone had, or have a diabetic cat and have any advice - he will be 11 at Christmas and is a former feral but now a sweet heart althought the vet who did the blood test may have a diferent opinion - he put 2 nice scratches on her hand, me I replied lucky in his youth he was knocked out for every visit including basic injections and has a vet and vets nurse in hospital to his credit!

We would welcome any advice as this is a new condition for our feline family and we have bneen through most things
