Lol Em - I am now picturing you in a darkened house with no way of contacting the outside world ... suddenly Bertie's little wire-chewing incident sounds tame!

Fergus and Polly chew through wires (although not sure if it's both of them or one). So far they have chewed through 3 phone chargers, set of fairy lights around the bed, digital radio charger and the clock radio aerial (sounds like that kids story book "the hungry hungry caterpillar!!) None were plugged in at the time and it only seems to be the small, thin soft wires like the phone charger types, they havent chewed though any "proper" lights or cables......YET!!!

One of mine chewed through a wire at about 2.30 in the morning, I had to get her into the emergency vets as I didn't really know what she'd done at the time apart from her salivating an awful lot and her tongue being ulcerated.  Luckily she was fine and funny enough she never did it again.   I'm glad Bertie managed to get one that wasn't plugged in but he will think twice if he chews into a live one.

we had a pet rabbit that did that once. In Bunty's case the wire was in use at the time. There was a loud bang, a flash of blue light, a strong smell of singed furr and a very startled rabbit backed out from behind the fridge a lot faster than he had gone in there - no lasting harm but the hair on his nose grew back white
 Reminded me of a funny pic! (glad Bunty was ok!)

My ratties were wire-chewers - they went right through wire tidies, but "stop n grow" (for stopping nail biting) and bitter apple put them right off! You need to re-apply about once a week for about a month, till they learn to leave well alone, but it's very effective.

some circuits are less voltages than others and igf he was do do it say to an electric cooker, i think things would be different but am not sure.

not good for them to chew wires period and thay sounds like a problem.

you can get wire tidies and stuff which enclose the wires so maybe that would be a possibility.

My bunny did that when the shed door got left open by mistake, he was ok tho.

You can get bitter repellents if you are concerned

So he wasn't killed?  My OH said that even if the lights had been plugged in, Bert wouldn't have been badly hurt ... he does know more about voltages and things than I do, but I still worry about it!!

I can't quite believe what Bertie did yesterday ... he chewed right through an electrical wire while I was at work.  I bought some new lights from Ikea at the weekend, and fortunately they weren't plugged in ... but when I got home from work yesterday, he'd chewed right through the wire and severed the plug from the cable.  I know it was him and not one of the other two because he was still fiddling with it when I got home and disturbed him.  It's scared me a bit, as he's never done anything like this before (he's three) and now I'm worried he'll chew on something that IS plugged in and blow himself up!
