and the top pin of a plug is just the earth,(not all appliances are earthed) but you still need the top pin as it is a safety feature
to stop young children electricuting themselves by poking stuff in the terminals.
If you look at the top hole of the socket on the wall you will see a cover, this prevent's a current going out, when you put a
plug in, the top pin moves the safety cover and allows the current to flow

I'm not a sparky but learned of this while changing plug's onto different wall's
