Well, we had Merlins teeth out, we had a bit of a scare with his calici virus he was really unwell and had a temperature of 103, but now he is back to his old self tearing up the place

Same as Susanne in that I have posted on the oldies op thread but total cost for dental today was £136.40 which includes biochem profile, set up of intra-operative fluids, dental and anaesthetic, antibiotic and painkiller plus bag of fluid. He also was sent home with four pouches of recovery food and two tins of convalesence food at no further charge. His follow up appointment on Friday has no charge either. This was at Pedmedics emergency 24 hour hospital (which also operates as a normal veterinary practice) in Worsley, Manchester

That is a very expensive blood test Chris - I get the most complete test my vets lab does for mine once a year, and that is around £80, but does include thyroid. I would see what the other vets charge to be honest. The sad part is that not everyone can afford high figures like that.

Glad the dental went well, Tiggy was hyperthyroid for almost 5 years (14 - 18 years), it was very well managed and din't affect her quality of life at all. A high urea value can also be down to dehydration or even stress so not necessarily anything to worry about at this stage

My old lad went in for a jab today, and the vet took a quick look at his teeth. (Because his breath STINKS!) He's going to need dental work at some point, and the quote was around £100. (Better start saving.) I'm a bit nervous about it though, because he's 12 and the idea of him being under anaesthetic scares me.

Hope Merlin and Yumi both get better soon.

Well, I have just come back from the vets with Buddie and I'm £474 poorer. I checked my old vet bill from last year when Buddie had exactly the same done to him and it was £186. I have asked why the prices seem to be so much higher and the receptionist told me that part of the reason is that they have been taken over by MediVets. Well thanks Medivets!.
I only have the choice of 2 vets in Wantage and Danetree has come recommended over Abivale but with those prices I think they will loose clients. Wonder how much, if any , I get back from the isurance people.

To all of that his Urea value and Thyroid test are not as good as they could be and I have to go back in a month time to get the test re-done. I'm really worried about him now.

Wow that sounds a lot to me. My 17 year old is going in for a dental tomorrow and they have quoted me about £100/£130. Fluids cost £18-£25 and the pre op bloods for a full screen is £35 and my vet is not known for being the cheapest. Good luck to your cat with his op

He is having at least one extraction depending on if they find anything else that needs to come out and the extraction is included in the above price

12 days ago Buddie stopped eating and I took him to the vets and his gums were infected and 2 of his back teeth looked bad, which they thought was the cause for not eating. He finished his course of antibiotics and I have just dropped him off to have a dental. They also thought that his right thyroid was enlarged, which could explain that despite him eating usually like a horse, he has gradually lost weight over the last 2 years (from 6.2kg to 5.1kg). He is a very active cat and otherwise very healthy for his age. The vet commented that he wouldn't have guessed that he is 11 1/2 but that he behaved and looked like a much younger cat.

Anyhows, I got the quote this morning £422.34 (prices incl. VAT):

I had a look in simons mouth and it appears his problems have swapped sides, im hoping he wont need the teeth on that side out aswell or he wont be able to chew his chicken wings

Oh dear Poor Merlin...that sounds awful Yumi is only young ( 2 years old this August) and am so worried that she will have to have teeth removed

Poor little Merlin, he must be scared and maybe in pain but he loves you and knows you will take care of him

I hope he recovers quickly and my brothers cat Chester also a calici victim had to have all his teeth our at about the same age.

We have picked up Merlin, he is fine, they said he has only eaten a little bit of fish and he may not eat much at the moment. I got him home and cooked him some fish and some chicken and he ate a bowl of each and now he cry’s when I go out of the room and he cannot see me, so it looks like I will be sitting in the lounge for the rest of the day, a good reason not to do any house work.

He has had 6 lots of antibiotics this year and the last lot was 3 weeks ago, has gums have been like this for about 1 year and after he has had the antibiotics his gums do not go back, his gums are aways blood red and over his teeth

I thought it was normal practice to have a course of antibiotics to settle down infections before they go rummaging around in the mouth potentially opening up more area to infection?

Merlin has to stay in over night because his gums are so Red and over his teeth so you cannot see his teeth at all and the vet said it is going to be a very messy job and he will be in a lot of pain. I think they are not taking any chances as he has the Calici virus as well

Hi Littlebobo my cat Merlin goes to the vet to day to have all his teeth out, the vet said it will be between £350 to £450 with one or two over night stays, he is only 16 months old

Its a common problem, the teeth are not in bad condition but they allow bacteria into the gums and you get an immune response where the gums basically become allergic to the teeth.
It can be treated with steroids which imo is doing nothing but hiding the prob and eventually they stop working. And the other choice is to remove the teeth and hope it solves the problem, which in most cases it does.

Simon had the cheek teeth on his right hand side removed when he was 18months old and since then his gums have healed up. He also got granulomas which got infected when the teeth rubbed them, these dont occur as often anymore

You should get a rough quote but they go by time and they never know what needs doing til they have had a good look. Healthy teeth take longer to remove.

When Max had his a few years ago, he had a scale and polish, and 2 exctractions, and I think the bill was about £130/140 ish.

It varies from vet to vet really - for example, my vets charge £37 for the pre-op bloods DAwn mentioned. My vet always gives a scale of between x and x, but prob in the middle, or nearer the top end, it all depends on what they have to do, and the anaesthetic normally goes off their weight, so Gingers were always more than Pebbles, as he was nearly 2kg heavier.

I know when I had Billy in, his bill was about £100 and he had to have quite a few teeth removed due to his Gingivitus. I'm not sure what Freddie's bill is yet as he had to have all his removed, I'll find out tomorrow but I would think it wouldn't be much more than Billy's.

Modified to add Freddie had pre op bloods etc before his because of his age but I'm pretty sure they only charge about £20 something for these.

Maybe they just want to have a proper look in her mouth? I remember when Jaffa had his dental they said they couldnt say exactly what he'd need doing until they had him under and could look in his mouth properly. If gingivitis is left untreated it can lead to more serious problems such as abcesses so maybe they just want to have a good look and a clean. Just guessing. But I would ring them up and ask exactly what they are hoping to achieve with a dental.

As to price, I think it can vary a lot from about £100 to a lot more. It was over £300 for Jaffa but that was because he had pre-op bloods, iv drip etc.

I don't understand why the vet would suggest a dental if there's no tartar or plaque there

. Did they explain how a dental was going to resolve swelling? I've always taken a dental to be, basically, a scale and polish

Has Yumi got any teeth they might be planning on removing?

Hi all,

i need to book Yumi in for a dental can anyone give me a rough estimate of what i should be looking to pay for the dental.

She has quite bad gingivitis the vets have said it is still in the early stages and there is no tatar or plaque on the teeth nor sign of peridontal disease but they think a dental will resolve some of the swelling around her gums.
