I think it's sort of a family thing - Gizmo and daughter Bubbles have almost silent purrs - you have to have your ear against them, whereas our three unrelated sisters are purrs aloud - have to turn the tv voume up !

Portia is the first female we've had and her purris very quiet. Benny one of my old cats had a purr like a 747 taking off. Oliver's purr is average, but as I'm in disgrace I haven't heard it lately

The cats I've had in my adult life have been three females and one male and I have found that all the females have purred much louder than Bertie. Bella's is so loud it keeps me awake. Minnie purrs when she's eating and propels bits of dry food across the kitchen

Jaffa purrs so loudly I'm surprised the neighbours don't complain. Mosi's is virtually silent. For a long time I thought he didn't purr at all but if I lay my head on his side I can just about make out some vibrations.

Kocka used to have her purr , her loud purr and her super purr and I used to call her roary lion

Misa purrs like a tractor and is almost as good as Kocka. Franta has a soft bass purr and its lovely, Ducha also has a very soft purr and as for Madam Sasa , I dont know if she purrs or not

I did discover last night that she has a big hisssssssssss when Franta offended her!

Funny you should say that because my experience is the total opposite. My male cats have always had loud purrs where are the females have been very quiet ones

I named Harley after the first time she purred, she was as loud as a motorcycle.

Penguin our only boy you can hear but not over 2 of the girls! Smoke who is also a girl you can barely hear.

Depends on the cat I suppose

When I first heard Quinn purr I thought there was something wrong with the computer till I realised she was sitting next to it.

Leigh thats the type of thing i find interesting (re the racoon info LOL)

Now let me think about this, i once watched a very good wildlife documentary on the big cats (7 breed i think ie lion/tiger/cheetah etc) and part of classification that makes them "big cats" are the purring and 1 of them cat purr and arent a true big cat although they are generally just classed as they are. The only problem is i cant ruddy well remember which one

Ooo, I dunno.

Daffy purrs MUCH more loudly than Letty, but she's far smaller, maybe 2kg lighter. They're litter-sisters, although I suspect they probably don't have the same dad.

My largest cat has the softest, quietest purr....the females some what louder....loudest of all my boy Yagga and incedently he's the most soppiest also

I'd agree and say individual and not necessarily size related.

Fraser will purr like a tractor but codys' is really quite quiet, actually he didnt really purr until after he was around 1 and only this year been purring more which is quite bizarre i think

I am relatively unfamiliar with female cats, one I know fairly well is Aisha, a beautiful Birman of our friend. She is quite aloof and seems to think purring to be rather degrading for her regal character.

Their size may be an explanation though, Oliver is quite hefty for a 5months old, already a size of an average full grown mog, has a loud purr that can be heard from the other side of the room. Hobbes, another chunk, was the same way.

our big girl star has quite a small purr and oscar who is almost 6kg (not fat but a really big boy) has the tiniest girliest mioew ever!! Tilly is 3.9 kg and is totally gobby!

Individual cats I'd say and not, IMHO, size related either as Alfie makes a sound like a lawn mower ticking over and he's a fair bit smaller than Frankie who, as the largest of my three, makes the softest sound and Suzie whose by far the smallest makes the next loudest sound.
