Thank you all so much, OH slept with Charlie again last night and he slept most of the night.  He had a poo this morning so thats a relief (Charlie not OH!)
I am at work today and OH has taken some holiday so that he will be able to look after Charlie, he just phoned me and said that he is going to give him a sponge down because he is a bit smelly.
He was very grumpy this morning before I went to work and he keep tring to get his "lampshade" off.

Thank you all so very much, sorry I didnt post yesterday - Charlie seems to be on the mend but my poor boy looks like a patchwork quilt - I just want to cry everytime I look at his poor little body but then I tell myself how lucky we are that he is still with us, I picked him up on Mon Evening and he just cried and cried on Mon night, OH has slept on the floor next to his cage since he came home.  I think because of all the stitches he is finding it hard to find a comfortable position to lie.
We had a fright this morning because it looked like the wound was weeping really badly so we went to the vets and she explained that the weeping is coming fronm the hole where the drain was removed.  She was concerned about a patch of skin that she thought might die but said today that it is looking healthy.  Poor Charlie is constipated so he has got to have a laxative tonight.
Our vet Nina is so lovely and when we got the bill she has only charged for all the medication and not a penny for all her time.

Fourfurballs - thank you for sharing Dinos strory, so glad that he made a full recovery.

Not quite sure what I did - typed a reply here yesterday but must not have posted it :-[

I am a new member and have just seen this. How is Charlie?

I thought if I shared a nasty experience I had with my cat Dino it may give you some comfort about the things they can come through. When he was just a few months old, Dino ran out in front of a car which braked to avoid him but hit him and as the wheels were locked when they hit him they ran up his legs and ripped the skin and tissue completely off one leg and partially of another right down to the bone. My hubby and I heard the squeal of the tyres and immediately called the cats when Dino didnt come we ran out and the driver of the car picked him up in his jacket and started walking towards us. When we saw him we went into shock. His legs just looked shredded. We though he would die from the shock alone. He went through emergency surgery that evening but the vet was not holding out hope. He went back to our normal vet after that weekend and before he got home to us he went through another surgery to amputate some of his toes. He came home after about a week with 3 legs in plaster. He pulled through it all and after months of treatment with a new drug all the skin and fur even grew back on his legs. He is 4 now and is a wonderful cat. He gets a little lame in the leg that was totally degloved but he lives a full and normal life. Like you I kept hearing the accident and seeing his little legs afterwards and I really was scared whether we would be able to care for him well enough at home. We did and it was like second nature, he was also a lot happier at home with us and perked up as soon as he got in the door.

I am sure with your love and care Charlie will pull through this and that he will recover so much quicker for being at home with the family he loves. Good luck and get well soon Charlie.

I have only just seen this, what an awful experience for you. I hope your first night at home with him wasn't too bad, I had a similar experience with Pebbles, I had no idea how I was going to cope with the sight of her after her amputation. I hope he makes a full recovery, and he will probably do better at home.

I agree he will do much better at home. Hopefully Rosiesmum will read this thread as her cat suffered similar sounding injuries (different cause though) and made a full recovery very quickly.

Thanks to all you lovely people for the support, my OH is still trying to work out how I managed to get up the railings to lift Charlie off, I dont even know myself I just knew I had to do something and did it,

It is amazing how we find these resources at times of emergency and thank goodness you did.  I am sure Charlie will perk up immediately when he comes back home to you.  Wishing him a very speedy and complete recovery - let us know when he gets home

Sheryl, so sorry to hear about Charlie, it must have been an horrendous thing to witness but, in a way, a godsend that you saw it and knew to look for him in his injured state.

Sending lots of positive thoughts to you and Charlie - hope he starts to feel better soon.

Poor Charlie, it must have been absolutly horrible for both of you. Archie and I are sending lots of love and head rubs. A close friends cat had a similar accident last year and was impaled on a gate with spikes . Lucy has made a wonderful recovery with no after effects. Its natural to keep thinking about what happened, be gentle with yourself, you have had quite a shock.

Its hard to describe Lynn - the spike went in under close to his front armpit which made a big hole and the skin ripped downwards and accross between his back legs, the vet said that they lost count of how many stitches.
