well the vet says its not Hyper T he is running more blood tests and has given him tablets for the trots and to induce his appetite. I will hear more once the results are in. Fingers crossed xx

She does, these have been taken after treatment, as she looked scrawny before apparently. For those who dont know her, she was a cat I took in last year, prob about Julyish, we had been asked to help with a pregnant cat that RSPCA wouldnt' help, and turned out to be a 10year old spayed female!! She was here quite a while though, but hated other cats, so had to be kept completely separate, and I was so relieved when she found a good home.

Here is the little girl I asked about - on the 9th OCtober, she will have been in her new home for a year, she looks really nice, some of you may remember Martha (now called Jet, much nicer I think!!), she looked a bit scared on some of the pics I have of her!!

HAve spoken to Jet's owners, her heartrate has come down, and she has gained some weight, but is being a typical cat in taking her meds twice a day!! They have had her nearly a year now, can't believe how quickly time has flown, so nearly another year older too!!

having hyper T does not mean the end of the world. Surgery would not be recomended for a FIV cat as radiotherapy works just as well, but that mean that after the treatment they go from being over active Thyroid to underactive, but thats fine, they go on tabs for that and eventually you learn tricks to tablet giving. My cat had tabs 2xdaily for 9 months and we found ways to give them to her without too much distress.Yes my Fluff has passed away now. Hypert can be managed with medication, such as Felimazole as Dave mentioned, usually means a couple of tablets a day, sometimes just one. Surgery or radioactive iodine treatment are other options, but I don't know if all the treatment options are suitable for FIV cats. yes me too its costing a samll fortune. I assume your little one passed away then ? I am so sorry. I am so scared for my Tabby hes like a bag of bones at the moment. Poor thing has FIV and suspected Hyper T i will find out more on Sat. Is there any advice you can offer me if he has got hyper t

Unless you are on income support or a on low income its highly unlikely. I spent close to £5000 on Fluffy in her final few months. If there is anything out there Id love to know for future reference!

The one Sonia has is felimazole, and she's doing well on it. The rescue pay for her meds though, so I've no idea how much it costs.

Des, cats can get hypert as young as 6, so vet could be right about her age. She could consider the radioactive iodine treatment as well, its more effective than surgery - only drawback is quite a long stay in a vet hospital - several weeks.

Will mention the op to her, and see what she thinks, I had actually forgot about that when I e-mailed her back, but the FAB info sheet should have mentioned it.
MM - it would still be worth her trying to save money, as not only does she have an excess (think she went with Sainsburys, I recommended them and M & S, so it will go up when she hits £350), but overall she would be better getting the meds for less, cos then she will have more to use for anything else relating to the hyper-t.
Tammy - I think hyper-t is covered as long as you pay the premiums, as I said, she is with either Sainsbury's or M & S and both pay for long term conditions as long as you pay the premiums on time.

Im not sure if the the insurance would cover as it would be considered a long term thing like diabetes and not all companies will cover that. Best check first!

Sorry to hear this, how old is the cat Desley? Would she consider having the thyroid removed after her levels are stabilised? Tiggy was hyperthyroid for 4-5 years and had I known how long she was going to be on daily meds for I would probably have thought more seriously about the op. Giving the tabs to Tiggy was no problem it's just that twice daily meds is very limiting, you have to be home at set times and can't make plans as you have to go back home to medicate. If the cat is hard to give tablets to then Dairylea?primula and defurrum treats would be my top tip.

I can't see why she can't go through vetuk still as the vet will obviously have to prescribe the meds as part of the treatment that is covered but might be worth ringing the insurance company to double check.

Have had an e-mail from a lady who adopted a cat from me last year, they took her to the vets due to increased appetite and no weight gain, and she has been diagnosed as hyper-t, so was asking for some advice. Have given her the FAB article, and also recommended she use VetUK for the meds - Jet is insured, can she still use VetUK with the insurance paying out? Also, any other tips?
