They decided against a maine coon, british shorthair or russian blue then!  ;D

Was the kitten showing signs of being unwell when they collected him or did the symptoms start after they got him home?  If the former then the breeder needs to be reported to the GCCF, or whichever organisation the kitten is registered with.  Did they buy him from a reputable breeder?  Most kittens come with 6 weeks health insurance which is activated by the breeder on the day you take the kitten home.

The only "toro virus" I can find on the internet is Punta Toro Virus (Bunyaviridae, Phlebovirus) but I get the impression this is VERY rare due to the lack of information available.

Will keep searching and see if I can find anything else.

sorry, but see Susan's post below yours and also my post on your other question - no responsible breeder would release a kitten that was suffering any disease, certainly not the non-existent Toro Virus (unless this is a British disease I have never heard of?? Guys???) If circumstances demanded that they release the kitten they should have given your parents clear and precise instructions about the nature of the disease, its treatment and its likely duration. None of which they provided at Point of Sale. If I were your parents I would be getting pretty angry by now.

Dear All,

Thanks for all your advice. The in-laws have chosen a 13 week old Siamese Seal Point, which they collected on Sunday. The kitten has not yet settled in yet and they have noted that the third eye is very visible, which I believe could signify some ailment. They have contacted the breeder who assured them that it was brought to the attention of the vet who says it is Toro Virus and that it should clear up in 7 - 14 days. As anyone else heard of this virus?

HI  try here http://household.uk.freeads.net/blue_solid_british_shorthair_kittens.-454269.htm  also one in Brigend area mite be worth a google

Purrsonally I'd advise against going through ads like this.

If you are looking for a kitten or an adult, go through the breed clubs. Most clubs will have both a kitten list and a rehoming officer.

I agree.  There are plenty of dodgy breeders around (we've heard enough stories on here to prove that) and while going through a breed club doesn't guarantee a good breeder, it increases the chances.  Backyard breeders are rarely going to try to join a breed club.  It really is a case of buyer beware (and be aware!) when purchasing a pedigree kitten.  There are great breeders around who do everything properly and produce healthy, well socialised kittens but it's up to the purchaser to make sure they buy from one of these and that they know what to look for.  Personally I'd avoid any kind of ad.

Have you been through all the prefered breed rescues ?  Often breeders will want to find homes for young cats after they've had a litter or used as stud a couple of times.

Just to add, please ensure that the breeder is registered and that you meet the mother of the kittens as well as the kittens.

If you go through the breed club kitten list, the breeders will be both reputable and registered with the GCCF. (or TICA / FIFe if you go down that route)

I think that to meet a breeder at a national cat show may also be a good idea but witty knows more about this than me.

Often there are pedigree cats and kittens available from rescues but they would not usually have certifaicates.

Hiya, welcome to the board!  :welcome:

The GCCF has a pretty comprehensive show calendar here: http://www.gccfcats.org/showsnew.html

As various posters have already mentioned, the best way to look for a kitten is to go through the relevant breed club - most will have a kitten list and you will be directed to reputable breeders. Though if you are wanting a particular breed or specific colours within a breed, you may well have to travel further afield.

What I would recommend however is a visit to an all-breed show to have a look around before you commit to a particular type of cat. There are two coming up in your neck of the woods in the next month or so, one the West of England & South Wales (Bristol), the other the South Western Counties (Taunton). The dates and club websites are on the show calendar link. There's also the Cambria Cat Club (Newport) later in the autumn.

If you don't mind a longer trip, I would suggest you visit either the Supreme in Birmingham or the National Cat Club show in London. The Supreme has "Club Row" where the different clubs showcase their cats and the National has the "World of Cats" where you can actually meet and greet the different breeds and talk to breeders in depth. Either show would be well worth the experience as a visitor.  ;D

 :welcome:

The best place to start a search for a breeder is via a breed cat club.  You can find a list of GCCF affiliated cat clubs here

http://www.gccfcats.org/clubs.html

Most clubs will have a kitten list and a contact who is responsible for details of kittens.  You can also find lists of shows there.  It's always a good idea to visit a few cat shows and speak to breeders about the breeds you're interested in before you make a decision.  There's also some good guidance on the GCCF website about what to look for in a breeder.

Good luck with your search

Hello alphapets.

This site exists to raise money for, and awareness of, cat rescues which take in and rehome abandoned, mistreated or stray animals.  As such, we do not have any details for breeders and cannot as a site recommend any - unless any individual members know of rescues specialising in the breeds you specify.  Such cats would be neutered, of course.

Still, Blackcat and Sam have given you useful advice, by the look of it.

Hi and welcome to purrs.

I would check out the kittenlist as a starting point for breeders:  http://www.kittenlist.co.uk/index.php?page=adverts

With regards to cat shows check out the cat diary on the following site:  http://www.ourcats.co.uk/

most breeds have a breed society website so the first thing I would do is google to see what is out there. Cat shows are generally advertised in local papers. Not sure if there is a central cat fancy in the UK but worth trying to find one. If there is, they would be able to put you in touch with local breeders.

Dear All,

I am new to this site as my Father In Law is searching for either a Main Coon or Russian Blue or a British Short Haired Blue. We live in Gwent so would prefer to locate breeders in this area please or South West England or Welsh/English border. I know he would prefer one boy and one girl. Any ideas of local cat shows also?

Kind Regards

 :thanks:
