From what I've read on the web (google it) Tiger had a lucky escape as the pills are not meant for cats at all and can be dangerous! There's a lot on how dangerous they can be in dogs too. I can't believe there isn't something else they can use other than Rimadyl; the injectable form is authorised in the UK for cats but not the US. I think I read it's only been used for 4 years or so here but may be wrong on that.
Max has eaten today but hasn't used his tray yet and I'm still syringing water down him. He has another appointment tomorrow where I'm going to have my say with the vet. The blood results come back tomorrow but probably only after my appointment.

Fingers crossed for them, dont beat yourself up, it was the vet who prescribed the meds, not you. Am interested about Rimadyl though, Tiger was given that in tablet form last year.

thanks, but you know how it is..."why didn't I leave alone". But I did tell the vet not to give him anything that could upset his tum. However feel such a bad mum.
got to feed the beasties at 5pm and see what happens.

not good news on Max. When the vet took his temp, he said there was some blood on the thermometer so he's bleeding internally. Gave him penicillin antibio injection and I must try to see if he'll eat and keep it down/in at 5 tonight, otherwise he'll be on a drip tomorrow. Said his stomach is very painful. Swampy at present looks like another tummy upset but we'll see how that goes too.
Vet took bloods from both cats as I insisted. Those results come back on wednesday (hopefully they don't mix up the cats with the same surname at the lab).
I'm pretty scared as you can imagine.

I have just googled and read with rage and alarm the stuff on injectable Rimadyl which is what Max got without any side effects discussion. Ulceration. Rare kidney and liver failure. The tablet form is lethal in cats and only in the UK is the injection used - banned in the USA. I think that my attempt to help Max's arthritis has, at the very least, given him an ulcerated stomach.

Panicking this morning (no sleep helps). They are both now vomiting and with diarrhoea. I'm really worried that it's linked to the i/d small cans I bought from vetuk. Vet didn't have them in stock so it's the first time I ordered from them. They haven't eaten much of that food but it's since using it that the stomach problems started. I rang Vets Now who thought that if it was Max only, it is very likely a reaction to the injection, which is an anti inflammatory.
Max is completely floppy and just lying there. Swampy's still quite perky, v coldy but just brought up a whole water bowl sized amount of phlegm/bile (he's not eaten and kept it down since last evening at 6pm).
Seeing the vet at 11ish as there are no appointments. I said I want blood tests done on them both. Hopefully the lab won't mix them up with 2 with the same surname on the same day.

I got a little teaspoon of water in him as I'm worried about dehydration. About an hour after that, he's vomited. Nothing in his tum so just clear fluid. I'm pretty worried. I'll be very upset if I get fobbed off by the nurse tomorrow - think I'd better demand an appointment. Why do these things happen on Sundays?!!!! This would be the opportunity to starve Max and get bloods done early tomorrow, but I can't guarantee that the vet would agree or be able to do a blood test first thing tomorrow.
Do you think I should keep trying to get some plain mineral water down Max and how often? I can't find my 5ml syringe.

thanks everyone! (Helen, as usual in awe of your easy PC skills...). He's finally asleep. Swampy woke up and demanded food, which he then regurged all over the rug (his cold making him make glob glob noises while he ate so I wasn't that surprised). OH is on a mega Sunday sleep so I've had a fun afternoon, cleaning pootrays, whoops on rug etc

I thought of the injection Max had on Friday for his limping - it sounded something like Rh()uma - something (not an anti inflamm don't think) and I'll ring tomorrow to ask if that can upset the tum. Mondays can be hard to reach the vet. I think I'll have to give his Maxness a tiny bit of i/d later, maybe just a teaspoonful as know it will 'return'.
Maybe I should get bloods done on him as googling revealed that kidney trouble can cause diarrhoea and he's been drinking a bit more lately. We are hoping for a 3 week trip away in latish sept (it keeps getting pushed back for work reasons

) and must know what we are dealing with as far as poss before putting the boys in the car for a long trip.

Vet sites say withhold food for 24 hours, which not sure would be possible without mega unhappiness and full on yowling - unless he keeps on running to the tray. I will try a teaspoon (assuming no more poos) after 4 - 5 otherwise it could be a loud night. I know also to try to check his fur for dehydration.

check with the vet it is not the meds doing the damage diarrhoea-wise. Some meds can do that. Poor laddy really is in the wars isn't he..

Aw poor Max...make sure he's getting enough fluids, dont know if your supposed to starve for 24 hrs (i personally cant do that!) i cant see why after waiting a period of time he shouldnt have his diet food but in smaller portions to start with

Not sure how to edit this thread title or if that's possible, but the limping's a bit better but since sometime during the night Max has had diarrhoea - worse than last time. No idea why as he's mostly been eating i/d and has eaten from the same can/s as Swampy who (touch wood) doesn't have diarrhoea. I fed him 1/2 can i/d in 3 little meals from 6.30am this morning but at 12.15 or so his tum really exploded.....too much litter on the mess (funny colour: light) to get any usable sample to take to the vet tomorrow. He's yelling and crying miserably for food, but I know I shouldn't feed him for quite a few hours no matter how many yells. He's also going to the tray - been 3x already - as if he wants to go again, but after a minute he leaves the tray without any poo so I suppose he has tummy gripes (?). I've not got any real experience of runny tums with the boys so please can you help?
What time do you think I can give him something to eat and how much should I give him? I would probably give him a little i/d seeing as though it's designed for cats with exactly these problems. He's the sort of cat that if you give him chicken, he'll then refuse any other food forever, so I don't want to feed chicken unless absolutely 100% essential.
I also gave him some Diarsanyl paste in his mouth, which is for diarrhoea. I'll give him more of that tonight. He's very mizzy and cross with me for not feeding him. Gets up from his bed every 10 mins to walk around crying, poor Maxy.

Edit: 2.45 just done some more diarrhoea and very unhappy indeed.

Hope the cosequin does it's job. I know it's not quite the same thing but my Mum has had Rheumatoid Arthritis all her adult life, with the right medication she is as active as ever - she goes horse riding, kayaking, rock climbing

Hope Max can do the feline equivalent once the medication kicks in

Max has arthritis in his front elbow joints. They won't straighten and when the vet tried, he hissed with pain. He had an injection of ruma-something (not an anti inflammatory) and isn't supposed to jump for 3 days (er, how to stop him?! am putting a chair in the kitchen area so he can use that to jump up but....). Then on Cosequin, see how it goes. He ate well though and is having a nice snooze so not all bad.

He's ok but I'm taking him to the vet tomorrow as he is still limping. Of course he won't limp nicely for the vet because when he goes there he lies in rigor mortis pretending it isn't happening. I suppose he'll get an anti inflammatory. Just felt I couldn't leave him limping for more than 6 days.
Does anyone know if there's any diff between all the different green mussel tabs and are they better or worse than glucosamine? Thanks a lot for the ingredients of the Cosequin.

You can buy it from vet uk, see Ruths link, and the cosequin will probably be cheaper than your vet too, unless your insured and they pay

thanks! It's very hard to get my vet on the phone; think his nurse screens calls from me these days as I've had to call him so often in the last 9 months. She now says she'll ask him and ph me back

Max is not limping quite as badly today so I'll see how it goes. If he's worse tomorrow should probably get him checked by the weekend. He doesn't seem to be in pain (although he is limping of course).

Anyone know what's in that (wondered if they were much the same thing). Max does have early CRF so nothing that's bad for kidneys would work, esp as the little horror mostly only noshes i/d (renal food only when freshly blended and then only a teaspoonful, otherwise is YUK). The Sheesh is in a good mood though ....MaxSheesh....and has had 1/2 can i/d this am so not too sorry for himself.

I wouldn't use Metacam without a vets advice though, as it can cause issues, and not sure if it could be used with Cosequin. The mussel thing is probably Green Lipped Mussel. Maybe just ring your vet and have a chat over the phone?

Have you tried Metacam ?

It works really well for arthritis although i have been told that prolonged use of it can lead to kidney problems - also cant be used if already have kidney probs (check with Lynn about that as she would know)

Max (13, nearly 14) is limping constantly from one of his front legs (assume the one he moves off fast is the sore one! quite hard to tell) , especially when he first gets up from sleeping. It was very bad on sunday, a bit better on monday, then the same yesterday as today, which is not as bad as sunday but not right. I put him back on his Cosequin pills for arthritis on sunday. He seems happy enough and still jumps up and moves about so doesn't seem in obvious pain. He was off food on sunday but since yesterday has been hungry. I didn't want to rush him down the vets as he's a vet phobe and gets soooo stressed plus thought the vet would give him an anti inflammatory which may put him off food again? Or don't they work like human ones?

How long can I leave it before taking him do you think? His last day of Cosequin every day is tomorrow (5 days treatment then every 2nd day). I went to a diff vet ages ago who uses some mussel extract pills from NZ. Does anyone know anything about what those are called as my vet hasn't heard of them. I'm pretty sure Max bashed himself by jumping down from the ironing board and his arthritis kicked in, but suppose it could be something else. thanks for advice! I've tried massage which he enjoys but not sure it does any good.
