We wanted to move Humphrey today to a foster carerer, but the vet have discovered he is bleeding internally abit. Thus he is now still at the vets trying to do an xray and see what the problem is. We may already be to late for Humphrey and bleeding internally is not a nice way to surcombe to end a life. We thus cannot move him until we know more and if the bleeding can no longer be controlled the outlook for Humphrey is pretty grim.  I so feel for this fella, its kind or heartbreaking that he may never get to a home.

Whatever the decision Humphrey deserves a mention for his courage and I hope the vet seems a glimmer of hope, rather then call it a day.

Keep everything crossed for this fella!

Stop it, you have now made me think of Pudding the cat I wrote about on Cat Chat whos owner committed suicide and then about 3 days late I lost Pudding due to chylothorax. Her story can be found on my site www.chesterfieldcats.co.uk

I know the feeling well. Three years ago I rescued a poor cat along the canal at this time of year, took him to the vets but he died just after Christmas, after one week with me. My only consolation was that I was able to give this poor puss a comfortable home for the last week of his life. It is indeed heartbreaking.

We had the vet run blood tests and they said he had a high white bloodcell count which they said meant he needed worming as he may have had tapeworms, and that he will just always be a skinny cat, so we took their word for it and it was left at that

Your posting gives me a chance to say:-

I assume everyone knows that all cats need to have flea and worm treatments frequently, recently I was looking after someones cat and asked them when did you last flea and worm it Bob, Oh! we haven't it was done beefer we had him in February they said. :-[

Despite the sad news I hope he can get a forever home for his remaining time so he can be loved and wanted.

Its alwys the oldies who pull my heart string despite having 30 under 10 but older cats will be on top of our wish list for 2007 once we are more settled afterall there's always room for one more we never say never well I don't and Robins just smiles and moves on! :)

Seems odd for an x-ray though, esp if they are looking for a tumour. I dont think blood transfusions are that common in cats, I do remember reading something once, and am just researching something, so will see if I can find anything out at the same time.

Could be if they wanted to inject him with contrast fluid.

I'm utterly ignorant about it but are blood transfusions not possible if a healthy donor can be found?

Aww, I am so sorry to hear things aren't looking good - am puzzled by not being able to do x-rays cos of blood loss though, there isn't any with an x-ray. Fingers crossed with finding him a placement.

Hello all
Sorry to report that Humphrey's results are inconclusive and his anemia is still very bad. I have just spent a long time on the phone with Isobel both wondering what to do next.  We cannot do any xrays or open him up due to blood lost.  The vets think it is still some kind of cancer but we just dont know what more tests we can do.  He will go on steroids for the next few days.  I am doing my best to find him a home for a while just incase things improve on steriods, rather then him staying at the vets.  Trouble is we may already be too late.

What to do for another terminally ill cat? it would be rotten to put him in a pen, he needs a home, for whatever time we can give him.  Its soooooooo annoying that we cannot do any further tests at the moment anyhows. He seems fine in himself though.  However, if the anemia stays high he will in time suffer from breathing problems.

My this is such a hard job sometimes!

Humphrey is still at the vets and they will do further blood tests tomorrow. If nothing else needs doing vet wise we hope to bring him into foster care until we can get to the route of his problems.  He is on antibotics. May here more on Tues.

Thats what we are hoping Des, that living rough for so long his ammunity is abit low.  Isobel tells me she will go in and see him tomorrow but he seems fine in himself although the abscess looks abit nasty.  I have been told he is adorable!

High white blood cells dont always mean cancer - they can mean infections. If your cat is happy and looking better, I wouldn't worry, but if you do want your mind put at rest, the only way to do it is with a vet visit.

So sorry to hear about Humphrey, hopefully things will be ok for him!

Does a high white bloodcell count always point towards cancer?

We had a cat die of cancer last year, and a few months ago Mouse was showing all the same symptoms, losing weight, sleeping lots etc.

We had the vet run blood tests and they said he had a high white bloodcell count which they said meant he needed worming as he may have had tapeworms, and that he will just always be a skinny cat, so we took their word for it and it was left at that.

Now he's fine, happy and healthy, has put on weight aswell, but should we be worried that it could be cancer afterall?

This is an update from Isobel (who is an vet nurse at the vets Humphrey is at)

Humphrey - he is pretty much the same, maybe not quite as ravenous! I have treated him now for fleas & worms & he is on some antibiotics for his skin. I spoke to Emma (other vet at Bourne) & she thinks he may come right yet. It would be an idea to repeat his blood test next week to see if his white cell count is reduced.

Maybe a glimmer of hope. Keep up those positive thoughts people!

Hello all
Will keep you all posted on Humphrey's progress. He is eating and seems jolly and fine friendly fella, but there is obviously something go on. Vet couldnt feel any lumps or bumps.

Hope to get a clearer idea of things on Friday as I said, but whatever we wont give up on the chappie.

One of our volunteers Isobel who happens to be a vet nurse is taking care of him, as she works at the practice he is now staying at.  So be assured he is getting extra attention, and even she adores him already.

But keep those positive vibes coming as Humphrey may need them.
