I've done homechecks before, a few years back when I was helping a v. small cat rescue in London. I couldn't give a monkeys about laundry, peeling paint or leaves on the patio. What's required is access to clean fresh food, clean water, no vicious dogs or boy racers runs nearby, and lots of cuddles.
I used to spin a yarn about a kitten in plaster, or an old Tom covered in oil and puss and if they get angry or cry, they are likely to be good folks.
As Gill said, tell them you're trying to get over the loss of a much loved cat and they'll try to speed things up.
