I thought I would  update this thread in case it resonates with someone else - for many months Penny would only spend a few moments in her bed by my chair, preferring to be on top of the wardrobe or on my bed - for a large part of every day I hardly knew I had a cat

I took away the vet bedding in the bed in case she preferred the bare carpetting, but no joy - then two weeks ago I put a folded smooth fleece in the bed, and bingo - she now spends at least half the day in the bed, even when I'm not in the chair

so it was all about texture - she's even using the windowsill again now I've put another fleece there

cats, eh - who'd have 'em :innocent:

Glad you have found a new spot for Penny Kay, and lovely to see you again. It may not be conventional, or what you might want for her, but she seems happy and content, which is the priority.

Kay nice to hear from you and Penny and love the cat tree, little steps are obviously her way, and perhaps put the bed in a cardboard box works wonders here for our lot who look in horror at anything new :)

Well, she still goes on top of the wardrobe sometimes, or on my bed, but there is a new favourite place now https://www.kalven.co.uk/products/18a24-28in-tower-penthouse-cat-tree-with-bed

it was a risk as she'd totally ignored the igloo bed and the tall scratching post I bought for her, but placing this bed alongside my chair has done the trick

still not interested in going outside though

She's lovely Kay :Luv:, and certainly has the look of a person who likes to weigh things up :shify: ;D

I've never come across a cat like her before, in my now lengthy years of cat ownership - for example, I bought a cardboard scrach bed for her, which my previous cats have all loved, and put it on top of the wardrobe, where she studiously ignored it for 5 months - then the other day I saw her dabbing at the outside of it, then hastily retreating, then advancing for another dab

you can see why a cat so timid when dealing with inanimate objects is so fearful of other cats

but she is happy, and healthy, and loves me, and that is all that matters - meanwhile the two outside cats come inside the outside enclosure for their meals now, and if we have a really brutal winter I will move their kennels inside too so  I can put heated pads in them

Wonderful Lyn,

I must get another copy of the book, I never tire of T S Eliot's 'Old Possum.'

I like MaCavity, having known Jo's, my Old Dear, not at work, MaCavity intimately.

Macavity's a Mystery Cat: he's called the Hidden Paw—
For he's the master criminal who can defy the Law.
He's the bafflement of Scotland Yard, the Flying Squad's despair:
For when they reach the scene of crime—Macavity's not there!

Macavity, Macavity, there's no one like Macavity,
He's broken every human law, he breaks the law of gravity.
His powers of levitation would make a fakir stare,
And when you reach the scene of crime—Macavity's not there!
You may seek him in the basement, you may look up in the air—
But I tell you once and once again, Macavity's not there!

Macavity's a ginger cat, he's very tall and thin;
You would know him if you saw him, for his eyes are sunken in.
His brow is deeply lined with thought, his head is highly domed;
His coat is dusty from neglect, his whiskers are uncombed.
He sways his head from side to side, with movements like a snake;
And when you think he's half asleep, he's always wide awake.

Macavity, Macavity, there's no one like Macavity,
For he's a fiend in feline shape, a monster of depravity.
You may meet him in a by-street, you may see him in the square—
But when a crime's discovered, then Macavity's not there!

He's outwardly respectable. (They say he cheats at cards.)
And his footprints are not found in any file of Scotland Yard's
And when the larder's looted, or the jewel-case is rifled,
Or when the milk is missing, or another Peke's been stifled,
Or the greenhouse glass is broken, and the trellis past repair
Ay, there's the wonder of the thing! Macavity's not there!

And when the Foreign Office find a Treaty's gone astray,
Or the Admiralty lose some plans and drawings by the way,
There may be a scrap of paper in the hall or on the stair—
But it's useless to investigate—Macavity's not there!
And when the loss has been disclosed, the Secret Service say:
It must have been Macavity!'—but he's a mile away.
You'll be sure to find him resting, or a-licking of his thumb;
Or engaged in doing complicated long division sums.

Macavity, Macavity, there's no one like Macavity,
There never was a Cat of such deceitfulness and suavity.
He always has an alibi, and one or two to spare:
At whatever time the deed took place—MACAVITY WASN'T THERE !
And they say that all the Cats whose wicked deeds are widely known
(I might mention Mungojerrie, I might mention Griddlebone)
Are nothing more than agents for the Cat who all the time
Just controls their operations: the Napoleon of Crime!

You know, Kay - one thing I've learned from my cats over the decades is that they're full of surprises, often when we least expect it.  When you go out, and Penny is left alone, I suspect she becomes a confident cartographer who guides Arctic explorers on their missions and plots satellite movements for NASA.   ;)

I've long suspected Barley of covertly working for air traffic control under the guise of observing bird flight.   :evillaugh:   We just don't know.........  :shify:

I won't lock the flap, then, but I do wonder if she will ever want to use it - my tiny cottage has a bedroom, leading into the sitting room, leading into the kitchen, and after 4 months she has hardly ventured into the half of the sitting room next to the kitchen. Curiosity is never going to kill this cat!!

If she were living here Kay, I would want to ensure she didn't go out for first time on her own so would keep flap closed when I wasn't able to be with her.

Can you remove the flap and leave it open whilst you keep an eye on her.  We've been doing that here whilst weather has been good as think Dinah's tail not fully recovered yet from whatever happened to it at the beginning of the year.

Amazing how quickly the youngsters forget how to use it with the flap on though  :innocent:

I think you have just got to be led by whatever Penny seems to prefer but agree with others that it is too soon to make her an indoor cat if she was previously used to going outside  :hug: :hug:

I think Penny is one of those people cats who like to have a good long think about things before deciding whether or not she approves of changes to her environment.  Two weeks  . . . she’s barely had enough time to start making notes ;D.

I think this is probably normal behaviour for her and she just needs a bit more time.  I wouldn’t close the door on the outside world just yet.

Can anyone advise me regarding Penny, please? Since Tiffany left us she has become used to spending time in the sitting room as well as the adjoining bedroom, but has hardly ventured into the kitchen, and shows no interest in going out into the enclosed garden. She has wandered around a bit out there when I have left the back door open, but scuttled back in when she saw Tiffany, or the two cats, who hang around outside the enclosure. But she hasn't gone out, or shown any interest in going out, for a couple of weeks now. Is this normal behaviour? I was told she had gone out at her previous permanent home, and used a cat flap, but I'm beginning to doubt it.

She's 11 now, so not a youngster, so I'm wondering if I should just close the flap and let her be an indoor cat.
