No Sue, Lucy certainly couldn’t be described as a cuddly, hands on cat – even when she sits on your knee, she often doesn’t want you to stroke her, and doesn’t even like you speaking to her!! She certainly isn’t a cat for everyone, and she certainly isn’t an easy cat to live with – sadly she hates other cats with a passion (the black eye/near blinding was just by seeing a cat outside, and she has drawn blood a few times by hearing cats outside), so I can’t get a ‘nice’ cat as well. She does seem a happy cat, especially when you look at her picture at the rescue, she relaxed pretty much instantly after coming here, and how depressed she was at the rescue was the main reason I adopted her, despite being bitten the first time I viewed her. I wrote this for the rescue after she’d been here a year.

Well, it has been 12 months since I adopted Lucy, in some ways she is a different cat, most notably the fact that she doesn’t sit on your knee all the time anymore, which is a shame.

Some of her quirks haven’t really improved, some of them make me sad, as her fear controls her – if she wants to go out and she can hear one of the neighbours car engines, she changes her mind – there are still lots of noises that bother her.

Of course, being one of my cats, she had to develop a health issue!! And of course hip dysplasia isn’t common in cats. The acupuncture seems to be working, which is better for her long term than daily Metacam, although unfortunately the numerous vet visits have left her wary of me, and she often hides under the bed from me.

The biggest, and best, improvement has been that she now weighs 5kg – in March she weighed 5.6kg, and in 2015 she weighed 6.5kg, so that will be a big help for her and her arthritis.

The most important thing for her though, is that she is loved and accepted for who she is, regardless of her hissing, huffing, growling and hitting!!

A lot would have sent her back Desley if she wasn't a cuddly "Hands-On" cat.  It takes a pretty special soul to understand that cats are complex individuals, just like humans, and some need more space and time and distance than others.  You've created that sort of "safe space" for her, which is just wonderful.

Then again, we have a lot of pretty wonderful people on Purrs, past and present.    :)

You can see from your various "Lucy Lounging" piccies that Lucy is a cat for whom all is good in her world, even with a pawly leg.  ;)

My neighbour said that not only is Lucy lucky I gave her a chance, but that she ended up with a home that could cope with her, a lot would have sent her back, either because of her aggression, or because she would have been stressed and hiding, I've never thought of that

She frequently puts her paws over her eyes if you try and talk to her - or if she is on your knee, she huffs a bit, so you have to shut up

This is typical Lucy, she was chilling and I dared to speak to her! The red bed is a heated bed, which is on top of a memory foam pillow and there is a radiator between the window and  the sofa - she isn't spoilt though :sneaky:

She is clearly a lady who knows what she wants - and how to get it!  ;D

Definitely! One of my friends thinks I'm too soft with her and let her dictate too much, but it prevents her using claws and teeth!

My friend told me Lucy is very lucky to have me,she's pretty sure nobody else would do as much for her, that made me happy.

One of her other quirks is that when she decides you are worthy enough to sit on your knee, you have to stop what you are doing, not touch her and be quiet!

She is lovely, Desley, and couldn't have found a better home.

I'm letting the side down a bit by having 2 pedigrees, perfectly socialised by their respective breeders. They are so very loveable though.

SHE IS BEQAUTIFUL DESLEY AND AM SURE SHE COULDNT HAVE COME TO A BETTER HOME.

SASA WAS AN UNHOMABLE WHO HAD BEEN WITH CP FOR OVER 3 YEARS AND REHOMMED TWICE AND BROUGT BACK ACCUSED OF BITING AND SCRATCHING.

IT HAS TAKEN ABOUT 10YEARS FOR HER TO COME ROUND AND NOW WILL BE STROKED AND COME FOR STROKES AND ATTEBTION, SHE WILL NOT BE A LAPCAT BUT LIE NEXT TO ME.

THE CHANGE WS SLOW BUT BY NATURE WITH OTHER CATS IS VERY AGRESSIVE AND ALMOST KILLED A GINGER WHO CAM INTO HER GARDEN BUT SHE HAS BEEN MISAS BEST FRIEND SINCE FIRST MEETING HIM IN THE CAR COMING HERE 12 YRS AGO.

SHE WS NOT BOTHERED BY NAPOLEON OR DUCHA AND HER AND LUPIN DO HAVE ISSUES.CANT FIGURE OUT WHO HASS THE MOST BUT HE WILL CHASE HERIF SHE MOVES BUT TOO SCARED TO GO PAST HER IS SHE JUST SITS LOL.

ITHINK THAT OVERTIME SHE WILL JUST DO BETTER AND BETTER, PROBABLY NEVERTRUSTING STRANGERS BUT YOU WILL BE HER FOCUS AND THE ONE SHE KNOWS SHE CAN TRUST.

MISA WAS ABUSED AND IT HAS REDUCED IN MOST ASPECTS NOW EXCEPT HE IS STILL SCRED OF OTHERBPEOPLE.

HE RECENTLY RETURNED FROM LANGFORD AFTER HAVING RADIO IODINE TREATMENTB FOR HYPRT T AND  THE INCREDIBLE CARE THEYBGAVE HIM OVERV 6 WEEKS HAS REDUCED THAT FEAR A BIT.

Lucy was on the RC Calm Food, I wasn't sure it was making a difference, until we had to stop it because of her kidney problems, and she has been more antsy since stopping it!! Luckily Feliway works on here, I wouldn't want to live with her without it.

willow was very aggressive, not just other cats but us if she saw other cats (oh ended up on three types of abs!) we have been using the royal canin calm food and its made huge difference to everyone in the house I wouldn't have dared pick her up before!

I'm not sure Sky is 'easier' than Lucy - the main problem with Lucy is that she reacts with aggression, she is clearly feeling better today, there has been lots of hissing and growling!!

We got Sky form RSPCA last year, all we know about her is that someone complained to RSPCA and Sky, along with her adult daughter, were removed from their previous home. We were told that she is 'shy' but that didn't even begin to describe the little lady who, after 9 months here, still runs away if we move too quickly and my OH can barely touch her (even though he feeds most of the time). She is adorable though and very affectionate on her own terms, she likes to come and sit on my when I'm in/on bed.

Even this sounds like a walk in the park compared to what you and Lucy have been through!  :(

we have one like that ourselves now, my nephew died a couple of years ago and I took his cat with a view to rehoming her at some point, unfortunately oh didn't want her to go, she had been passed between 4 members of my family already - at first intros with ours went ok but she had  massive fight with tilly over a spot in the apple tree and that was it, all out war!  they now basically time share the house and garden.  Luckily we have space and tilly by inclination likes to sleep upstairs for most of the day so willow gets the downstairs and garden while we are at work.  Its not an ideal situation but she has bonded with my oh and become a proper lapcat with us - it does mean we can't go on holiday as oh doesn't trust anyone to manage to keep a door between them!

Yeah, it is tricky - my neighbour adopted 3 semi-feral kittens from me last year, and goes away frequently, it is hard to have cats in different parts of the house, I suppose I'm used to it with fostering though.

No, you certainly can't! I got a female as Buster was so bad with the neighbours cats that we had to have a rota system to avoid fights, but Lucy hates other cats that much that she has beat most of the boys up – her flight/fight thing is mixed up though, some days she’ll fight, other days she’ll avoid them to the point of staying in. Doesn’t help that one of my neighbours cats loves me, and wants to be friends with her, so spends a lot of time on my doorstep.

Ah Desley, she's lovely.  :)

What a good thing she came to your notice.  As you say, she wouldn't have stood much of a chance with her history elsewhere.

Our two gurlies were semi feral, and still haven't lost their nervousness, although they're 100% better than they were.  Malt absolutely will not allow us to pick her up, which almost resulted in my OH losing an eye in a similar sounding incident to yours, and nearly resulted in us taking them back to the shelter.  Thankfully, we didn't.  We couldn't, and I'm glad we persevered.  We still can't pick her up, which creates issues around vaccinations and stuff, but she's a little treasure nonetheless.  And Barley, well she's turned into a right little cuddlebum.   :evillaugh:

Lucy is my current cat, and unusually for me, only 9 (she was 8 when I adopted her) - when I went looking, the rescue did have a pair of older cats, but they had only just arrived, and I wanted one that had been waiting a while - I was torn between her and another cat, but Lucy was the oldest, and had been there the longest - officially just short of 2 years, but she did have a 6 month break when someone gave her a chance but it didn't work, so she was really depressed by the time I met her. She was rather lucky though, she bit me the first time I met her, most people wouldn't have given her the chance - she had also drawn blood on most of the volunteers!! We've had lots of issues with her behavioural problems (worst being nearly blinded and a black eye!!) but some are getting better - the worst is her fear controls her, for example she rarely goes out on a Fri morning because it is bin collection day!! She came from a domestic violence situation, hence her issue with noise. She was also really overweight when I got her - she was 5.6kg when I got her, the vet wanted to get her down to 5kg. It took 15 months, but we eventually managed it. She has really bad scavenging issues, and for really random things like Chinese food and scones - suspect she was left to find her own food quite frequently. One irony is that at the rescue, all she did was sit on your knee, but as soon as she got here, that went out the window, she rarely sits on you now.

She had always had a funny walk, but due to her temperament, we had been using supplements, until last Oct, when she started limping. The vet suspected arthritis, but because she came from a domestic abuse background, she wanted to x-ray, in case it was an old injury that never got treated. X-rays showed she has hip dysplasia, both hips are affected but right is worse and she is starting with arthritis because of it. Unfortunately she was wary of Metacam being put in her food, so we went down the acupuncture route - simply because I didn't think we would stand a chance, but she has accepted it. Then in Jan, the vet thought she may have luxating patellas, which are rare in cats! The orthopaedic vet looked at her x ray's  and thinks it might be her hips sending her knee out. She went for a consult in March, when they decided she needed surgery, which she had last Tue. Unfortunately her pre-op bloods showed early renal problems, luckily we've caught it so early that we have just changed her biscuits, and we will do more regular blood tests.

Unfortunately I'm struggling with pics, but she is a very pretty tabby and white.

Hi welcome to Purrs.
Pics need to be resized to less than 350kb. If you are using a windows computer right click on pic and select copy, paste copy of pic in folder. Right click on copy select open with paint. Top left hand side of paint select resize. A window will open (see pics) double click on top box, horizontal, enter 14 click ok. pic will resize. save pic.
you should be able to post it then.
if you are using an android phone, go to play store and download an app called Images easy resizer.

Iphones I cant help with as I don't know the first thing about them

No one could describe Lucy as little! The downside of all the vet visits means she regularly hides under the bed from me. She also hates other cats, so she will be an only cat - the near blinding/black eye was redirected aggression due to seeing a cat outside and she has drawn blood numerous times because of cat's being on the doorstep!
