I am boss Bella hear me roar (she was sleeping in dd lunch bag). This last couple of days when she thinks we're not looking I've seen her playing with toys, something she hasn't done in ages

Just this minute found out that that the insurance company have paid our claim, means she can have all future scans without me stressing about payment. I knew they should pay but as it's such a lot of money I was a bit concerned they'd find a reason not to.

Since starting on her atenalol so far she's not had any more episodes and just seems happier and livelier in herself. She's back to demanding attention and complains on a night if a cushion isn't in her spot on the back of the sofa. Her heart rate seems to have settled around 120-135 a minute which is low for a cat but within what they wanted. Really hoping that when they scan her in a few months it also shows some benefit as from our point of view it seems to be helping.

Just got a new phone so trying out the camera and Bella is just sat there, she's now on a quarter of a tablet twice a day and her heart rate has dropped a bit, but still above 100. even dh has said she's more lively after he had to remove her from the top of the fish tank, it's a solid top but she hasn't jumped up there in ages

I think the other cats are in shock, sleepy laid back Bella is gone and boss Bella is back. Think she will have Harris firmly in his place soon, on one hand him knowing he can't push her around has to be a good thing but on the other trying to stop her bossing him around is hard don't want her getting to over excited

Paddy used to do that when he was on Felimazole for his Hyper-T. We'd think we'd managed to get it down him, then we'd find a tiny half dissolved tablet discarded behind the sofa or on a slipper.

Such good news that she's acting much more chipper.

Husband said its easy to get her to take her tablet, just put it in her food, Bella ate all the food and then spat her tablet out

Had to squish it into a dreamie (okay took 2 attempts as she found it in the first one ) daughter already in bed so she couldn't get her to take it

Bella's heart rate seems to be settling between 130-140 and vet said above 90-100 so later this week she'll start a morning tablet as well, she's also a bit more playful and alert and don't know if that's coincidence or maybe she's feeling better

Cheeky monkey spat her tablet out tonight, so daughter goes i can get her to eat it, she took some roast chicken of her plate put the tablet (its only a quarter so a tiny amount) in the chicken and fed it to bella. Why do i have the feeling that, that was bella's plan to get some chicken all along, could see her gloating at jess and harris as she'd had chicken and they hadn't
what you dont do when you have an evening to yourself is spend it googling bellas condition as its scary reading, but shes a strong lady and loves my little girl far too much to go anywhere just yet (or thats what im going to keep telling myself anyway)

She's been really good and had her first dose of medication, with the bribe of a dreamie, she let me do her heart rate. Have made a chart so we can keep track of when we're giving her her medication and her heart rate so it's easier to show the vet/specialist and so daughter can be involved as she'll like filling in the chart

We've been keeping a watch on her breathing every now and again since she was diagnosed with the murmur. The vet has actually asked me to try to check her heart rate as we'll adjust her medication level depending on it. She'll quite happily let me have a listen with a stethoscope, but even if she's asleep she starts purring the second I touch her. Did manage to hear her arrhythmia and it is quite shocking how much her heart rate changes, hopefully the medication will help with that

The vet may have suggested you monitor Bella's breathing? If not I suggest you ask if this might be a good idea? I used to video Boris breathing every so often for a full minute and then count the breaths whilst watching the video. The number of breaths can be an early indication of fluid which can be helped with diuretics.

As your vet said, it's fabulous that Bella lives indoors which will very much lessen any stress

Meant to add, the sedation really seemed to take it out of Bella, only today she's started acting herself, she's completely disgusted with her shaved chest and belly and keeps going to clean it and then stopping

Thanks ladies, she has sub aortic stenosis, which is really rare in cats. At least we know what it is unfortunately as its so rare in cats there's no proven treatment but in dogs they use beta blockers. We're going to start her on atenalol and then scan again in 3 months. Because it's so rare no one knows how long she'll be with us as she's at risk of sudden death and also going into heart failure, but there's no sign of that yet. My vet was very honest and said he doesn't know much about her condition but can always contact the specialist if he needs advice.
Looking online, studies done on dogs, surgery doesn't provide a better outcome and lifespan is on average 15 months after diagnosis. The vet did say if she hadn't picked our daughter at the rescue and become a house cat she probably wouldn't have lived this long so just to try and keep her stress free and see what her next scan says.

Judging from our beautiful Boris' experience, vet will want to show you what the scans showed up. I found it so much easier to understand what he was talking about whilst looking at xrays. It's so good that they were able to carry out tests without too much sedation due to heart issue. Good idea that hubby going too as two heads always better than one.

Might be a good idea to bring a pen and paper to take down a few notes. You might also want to ask vet if there is a recommended website for you to refer to when your head has stopped spinning so that you can better understand stuff so you can make better decisions.

If they are carrying out blood pressure tests it's better to take readings over a good number of hours. Also best not to do too many tests one after the other to avoid too much stress. Very much a softly slowly approach when heart issues involved

Worrying isn't going to alter anything in the meantime, so just try to prepare yourself against worse case scenario.

Take a notebook and pen with you, so you can write things down, and ask questions about things if you need to, because if there are options, you may want to arm yourself with additional information.
