So true Sue! The house was built around 1905 so has wooden floors. Our floor boards go from our flat into the hall under a partition wall. So I'm sure that would burn pretty quicky. Suppose I should be glad the cats don't go out otherwise we'd be pretty scuppered.

OH SUE THAT MADE ME LAUGH

THINKING ABOUT WHERE I WORKED, HAD SO MANY VERY HEAVY FIREDOORS AND WHEN BOTH ELBOWS WENT ONE OF MY STAFF HAD TO COME DOWN AND OPEN THEM ALL FOR ME SO I COULD GET IN  :evillaugh: :evillaugh:

FUNNIER BECAUSE MY JOB AT THAT TIME WAS WHAT THEY CALLED CENTRAL SERVICES AND WE RAN THE BUILDINGS WE HAD ALL OVER LONDON, BATH, LIVERPOOL ETC ETC!  EVEN FUNNIER ALTHOUGH RATHER SERIOUS OUR BUILDONG HAD BEEN COMPLETELY REFURBISHED AND ONE DAY JUST BEFORE MAY BH ONE OF THE LIGHT FITTINGS IN A ROOM FELL DOWN!

THE REFURB HAD BEEN A VERY MAJOR CONTRACT AND TAKEN A LONG TIME BUT THIS PROBLEM  STARTED A COUPLE OF WEEKS INCLUDING A STIFFLING BH  WHERE THE BUILDING HAD TO BE EVACUTATED FOR SAFETY REASONS COS THE LIGHTS HAD NOT BEEN ATTACHED TO THE JOISTS! CAUSED MAJOR PROBS COS SOME OFFICES WERE OPERATIONAL......ALLISON WILL UNDERSTAND  :shify: :shify:

ALL OF US IN THE POLICY/CONTRACTS SIDE AND THE BUILDING MANAGEMENT WORKED SHIFTS TO ESCORT CONTRACTORS AROUND THIS MASSIVE BUILDING IN CENTRAL LONDON SO ALL LIGHTS COULD BE CHECKED AND MADE SECURE.........NOW THAT NEVER GOT IN THE PRESS DID IT    TALKING HUNDREDS OF OFFICES ON EACH FLOOR.

ALL OF IT DONE IN THE DARK WITH FLASH LIGHTS AND RADIOS FOR COMMUNICATION AND IF ONE MORE JOKE WAS MADE BY CONTRACTORS WANTING TO GO OUT TO McD WAS MADE ON THE RADIO WE SWORE WE WOULD GO AND KILL THEM!

Yep, I have heard that about fire doors too, although when we lived in our old house, we had a fireproof door put on the back and immediately inserted a cat flap. (It was in a sale, and we liked the colour!)

House was ours though, so we could do what we liked.

It does sound odd for a manufacturer to declare a fire door will hold a fire back for 2 hours.  The rest of the house will have burnt to a crisp by that time, given joists, roofs and flooring generally burn merrily, alas.  But the door?  The door will still be holding back.  :shify:

I think Paula is probably correct, nothing that damages the integrity of the fire door will be allowed, We need permission to put a cat flap in the outside wall of the flat we hope to buy.

NO FLAPS IN THE DOORS!

WHAT ARE LETTER BOXES THEN?

Not quite sure about it Gill, but I do remember many years ago when I bought the flat in Crawley, the letter boxes were all brass and cat flaps were not allowed as it was a multiple occupancy building and the fire doors held the flames for a minimum of two hours. I would imagine it must be something to do with that.

I don't think you can have those either! There is only one in the main front door anyway but not sure what they will do maybe a box outside. It all seems a bit over the top for 3 flats!

The freeholder of our building just found out he needs to upgrade the fire standards in the building. These include things like smoke alarms in the hall and no cat flaps in the doors. Fortunately our cats don't want to go outside so only use the flap as a window. They really love to sit and look out of it especially if they hear people in the a hall. Just wondered if anyone else had had to do anything similar and if there is a way around it?
