Hope some way can be found to medicate him for whatever condition it is but HyperT sounds right from what you've posted. A lot of cats do very well on the hyperT meds but as you say it's a question of being able to medicate

Seems to be so many hyperthyroid cats around these days, we have just had Moses who is 18 checked but tests came back negative. I have 2 out of 3 cats HT. Silvie is doing really well since she had the RI injection, bouncing around the garden, playing, killing birds

and looks really well. It did cost a lot but her insurance paid for it. My vet never mentioned the ear gel but I had read about it. She is a nervous cat, every time the door bell rings she flies out the catflap and hides and doesn't like strangers but she did settle in well. Silvie sends her best wishes to Misa and hope he feels better soon and you get a diagnosis

Ninj was hyper thyroid, he didnt have the therapy as I think it would have been to hard on him to put him through it - he would have had to stay in hospital along with his other complications and he had never had any vaccinations meant it wasn't really feasible especially when they couldn't guarantee he would improve for having it done (the perils of being a stray and not knowing his age or history). I struggled to get him to take pills as he would eat around them, if he ate at all. In the end it was kinder to let him go.

HOWEVER, there is an Transdermal methimazole gel that you can use if he doesn't mind having his ears fussed

All you do is put the right dosage onto your finger (gloved!) or a cotton wool pad and rub it on the inside of the ear. It's very easy to do as long as your cat is used to being fussed round the ears.

It was never very effective for Ninj but he didn't like having is ears fussed so I did find it difficult to ensure he got the full dose - with Robbie and Sky it would be easier as they are used to it.

Just having a quick scan thro this thread cos Misa is ill and hyper T is top of the suspect list.......he has lost 2 kgs in weight but he is 15yrs old and scared of people.

He also has arthritus due to a pinned back leg.hip to knee.

He cant be pilled and Gareth his vet thinks he can feel something on his thyroid.....we will have the blood test results on Friday when i take the other two for boosters.

He is eating well but his jelly belly has totally gone and thought last night he is even smaller than he was. Orininally thought maybe he was self dieting cos takes the strain off his back legs!

My first cat had the op and then had kidney probs but that was over 10 years ago and only rereading here do i see one can hide the other.

My beautiful big boy is a much smaller noy now and his fur is not good but thought that was due to him not being able to groom fully cos of his back legs.

This therapy was mentioned by Gareth this morning and knew we had two cats who had had it.............need to wait for the bloods............................ .................seems this is not straight forward either.

So for anyone who is ever considering the RI injection, it does work! I was covered by insurance for up to £3k but it just went slightly over and I owe them £88. Not too bad

Just had a phone call from my vet, Silvie's results are back and her thyroid is now normal, at 20. It was low when she came back from Canterbury but now its fine, so my vet is very pleased and so am I!! She will go back in 6 month's time to have it rechecked and then just yearly from then on

She seems really well in herself, she ate less when I went on holiday for 10 days in July, my brother came round and fed the cats. I think she missed me, but as soon as we came home she ate normally again. She has put on weight since leaving Canterbury and is always bouncing around the garden, chasing frogs, the neighbours cats and talking pigeons. Just back to her normal loving self

Silvie went back to the vets today for her blood test as it is now 8 weeks since she had the injection. Should get the results back weds/thurs next week. Fingers toes and eyes crossed that it comes back normal this time (it was a tad too low when she left Canterbury).

Well the packet of dreamies tempted her and we made it to the vet this time. Silvie had her jab and also a worming tablet. She has also put on weight since leaving Canterbury vets, gone from 3.35 to 3.60 and her heart rate was nice and steady which is good, as last time it was racing! Just got to go back now in 5 weeks time for another blood test for her thyroid and hopefully it will still be normal. I would definitely recommend the treatment for any hyperthyroid cats, its just an injection under the skin under slight sedation. No surgery, 97% cure rate and the only downside is they are away from home for 3-4 weeks. But it soon passes. But it is expensive, but if you have insurance its better!

I am glad this thread has informed lots of you how beneficial it can be!

Silvie on the naughty chair at the moment. Was booked in at the vets yesterday for her annual jabs, along with Tabby my other cat. Silvie took one look at the cat basket and shot off up the garden, like a steeplechaser, over bushes, through the raspberries and disappeared. In the end had to go without her as didn't want to be late for the appointment

. The vet was disappointed as she wanted to see Silvie after her stay at Canterbury to see how she was. Now managed to get a cancellation appointment for 430pm this afternoon. So shhhhhh! don't tell Silvie......

I have sent a big box of cakes & biscuits goodies to Barton Vets in Canterbury who looked after Silvie, as they were so nice updating me every day on their client website and also by phone. Hopefully they should arrive there tomorrow
