Well, twists and turns of fate...

Penny is back from "Colin"'s. He's not willing to supply her grain free food needs and has a few other issues that post homecheck have come to light, so i've taken her back.  :shify:
She has a viewing tomorrow with a sweet lady who hopefully doesn't chain smoke 40 fags a day in an unventilated room, doesn't inadvertently leave the back door open after owning the cat for 1 day and doesn't expect the cat to pee in an inappropriately placed litter tray that she refuses to move for vanity reasons. hmmmph.  >:( Better luck next time Penny, darling. :crossed:

Lilly has the squits, DG1  Her placement at the adoption centre postponed until i've figured this out. Stomogyl didn't touch it, she's pill averse so i've started again from scratch with pro-kolin, wormer and grain free food. C'mon Lilly Lets swat that squit!

Released today was Scruffy, a sweet older tnr. Nice quick turnaround and exactly what CP want from us, but sadly almost every other case we've taken in lately has been high maintenance on the clinical front.

Trapping this morning, nada.  :rainin: :rainin:
Pouring rain but Mark and I stood out in it waiting for mummy and two kittens to turn up for their 8am breakfast. Of course they had more bleedin sense than us and stayed away. We gave it a couple of hours then gave up. shivering and fed up. Try again tomorrow, maybe it will dry up for an hour. :sigh:

It made me think about perceptions. The family who reported these cats to us via the web page wanted an immediate response: we were there in two days, not quite 999 standards but pretty bloody close in the current rescue climate.
We stood in the freezing rain without the offer of a single cuppa, or "would you like to wait inside, it's foul out there". Nope. We're the "hired" help and no way was this anything to do with them.
If we do catch the kittens I feel like sending them a bill afterwards just to make them think...  :heeee heeee:

Little Betty, remember the market kittens? remains with me for socialising. She sits by me, she enjoys tickles and strokes and is positively ferocious for chikkun. The occasional swipe reminds me she's not quite pet material, and she may never be  :evillaugh:
She's a small but powerful little black kitten. I've got a hole in my heart that was left by my Polly - a small but powerful little black cat. Do you think...?  :innocent:

Meanwhile we have a looming staffing crisis. Our recently appointed CP Treasurer has announced she's giving it up. New commitments...  :-: I'm thankful for the last couple of months but this has thrown us suddenly into turmoil...we must have three committee members to survive as a branch. Unless we can find a willing soul to step up and be the Third (wo)Man by Tuesday (yeah, er, not much notice  :-: ) the branch will be put on hold.  I'm committed to the cats currently in care and the clients we've pledged help to, but after that we may be forced to shut down operations.
I'm going to spend tomorrow pitching to the local community for a willing and able volunteer to cover this role for us, or we may actually lose the support of Cats Protection, and that would be very sad indeed after the efforts we've put into learning the policies and fighting this fight their way.

However, we've been there before, and if we do revert back to Waltham Forest Cats the work would continue, just on a much smaller scale. Wish us luck peeps!  ;D

Oh, here's baby Matilda we're putting a little fundraiser together for... her 3 week hospitalisation has cost us dear but you can see why we did...  :Luv:

And a couple of the amazing Lady Penelope.  :Luv:

Such a gorgeous girl who you were able to give the best 5 years of her life.  RIP darling angel Polly   :'(

The way you seem to find a way to carry on with your simply wonderful rehoming and feline caring activities is inspiring Sheila but I know full well you will feel the loss of Polly badly and hope the Tuftyclub gather round you to apply soothing balm to raise your spirits

Big adoption day today!  :wow:

Morgan and Flint are off to the adoption centre and Malcolm's amazing attentions  :Luv:

Penny is off to heal and be healed by Colin  :)

Esme and Charlie Chaplin will be forever plaguing their new family  ;)

Patty Fleur is reserved! Yaay a lovely family with an 8 year old boy who as yet doesn't know she's coming  :briggin:

LillyBet will be coming into care by herself which allows Marina and Troy some precious luvvin from our fosterer. Hopefully she will soften immediately but if not the amazing Martin punk rocker is making a den for her to be released to  ;D

Matilda is almost ready, her guardian Angel David doesn't know yet, I have that honour tomoroow

Sadly we lost a Tuftyclub stalwart today.  :'(

Polly was a Purrs rescue, for those of you who remember I collected her from The Wirral, saved by a Purrs member but needed rescue back up, Polly was easy to accommodate. She bonded with me immediately and was my constant shadow for 5 wonderful years. I loved her from the moment I saw her, and that shall never die.  :Luv:

RIP my delightful Polly. xx

Allison, i'm forever aware that life is beastly to the caring.

You know this.

Folk who don't care never feel the pain, the torment of decision, the dreadful emptiness, the guilt.

That honour is reserved for us, the special ones, the carers, we who treasure our fellow souls as though they were our own.

Purrs people, today you are treasured more than you can ever know. Thank you for your undying love, your unconditional commitment, your constancy, your vibes, you.

Thank you.

Sheila  :grouphug:

Remember remember....

Firstly I lower my hat to the passing of a Purrs pal. RIP Molly, darling. x

Bonfire month  :hairrasin: seems to have concluded... it was raging here Friday and Saturday nights, tonight too but thankfully it has subsided to the odd pathetic pop and sqweeeee. I used to adore fireworks but now... sheesh does it ever stop?  :grrrrrr:

This week has had a few surprises...

Firstly we discovered our first "phantom" pregnancy! Well, its appears to have been wind... or at least an incredibly exaggerated case of IBD. Anyway Penelope is out of the maternity ward and, grab your hankies girls and boys...

In the vets picking up the kittens Basil, Charlie Chaplin and Tristram after their castration I spy a weeping couple. I avoid eye contact as I'm in uniform and don't want to appear mercenary.  :shy:

10 minutes later the receptionist calls me aside...they've brought in their neighbours cat, an old, severely ill girl who needs to leave this earth without delay. The neighbour is agrophobic, elderly and possibly suicidal now his only companion is leaving him.  :scared:

Can I help?

Of COURSE I CAN BLOODY WELL HELP!

In my cache I have Penelope, just this week released from the binds of maternity and in need of a home. She's needy, an uber-affectionate lap cat who has been pushing out kittens as long as she or anyone else can remember.  :(

ISNT HE TOO OLD TO ADOPT?

No, the CP Cat Guardian Scheme will guarantee her safety if she outlives her new slave, or if he is taken into long term care.  :)

They're so impressed the pair of them break down and need to compose themselves. These are heaven's neighbours.  :care: This man is not a relative, nor a particular friend but they care, deeply, and understand his plight and his need. This is their religion and they will find their cloud for this act, I'm sure.

We exchange details and Penelope's future, and "Colin's" is assured. Her spay and medical all-clear are all that stand between them now.   :Luv:

My faith in human nature is again bolstered by yet another kind soul. Atlanta didn't adapt to life indoors, in fact she has prove herself to be positively averse to my attentions, so she needs to go back. Now spayed and her manky tooth removed, the infection cleared and microchip inserted, the lovely chap who has been her feeder and guardian of her kittens through the autumn months agrees so take her into his care where she will be safe, fed, warm and loved, albeit not restrained by pesky walls, pens or cages.  :wow:

Our amazing fosterers deserve a nod too. Marina, Ana and Ruth have gone above and beyond to help their various and changing charges, Marina especially turned around her maternity ward into a play den in record time so that LillyBet, Troy and little Marina namesake could move in. ;D Ruth coped brilliantly with bed wetting (Atlanta, not Ruth!)  and Ana fended off the dreaded Herpes Simplex virus amongst the foxed kittens at considerable personal cost  :-: as we discover she's sensitive to Hibiscrub and her hands are now red raw and sticky from the Manuka Honey she has employed to resolve them. :care:

Tad, Mark, Kat, Marina and I attended a training event on infectious diseases and flined origins at Paradise Park. A most interesting and valuable day, we're all now paranoid about cleanliness and employ our blue shoe covers at every feasible occasion.
Great team building too, it was the first time we had all been together and we missed poor Ruth who has been stricken with back and leg injuies topped off with the mother of all colds. Mixed feelings about the animals we saw in captivity from the magnificent white lions and tigers to the enormous boa constrictors, that there must be a better way of preserving these amazing creatures.

So, back to business, return for Atlanta, adoptions completed for Basil, Tris, Midnight and Darcey, with confirmed reservations on Esme, Charlie Chaplin, Matilda and Penelope. Return arranged for LillyBet who has decided she quite likes being feral, so that should leave us with a more manageable cohort of just seven.  :)

This is appropriate  :-: I need the team rested, fully stocked and raring to go in the run up to Christmas. We all know the dreaded peak of demands for kittens in the preceding weeks followed by the sickening tidal wave of abandonments and bad decisions shortly after 11am on Christmas morning.  :(
We will shut down operations in relation to rehoming a couple of weeks before Christmas to try and minimise the impact, but we saw it last year and no doubt will catch the tail of it again this time around.  :shify: I hope I've built enough bridges through the year to make this season surviveable. For all.  :shify:

So, Sunday evening passes, Penelope on my knee, Esme and Charlie ripping holes in their cardboard box, Betty now loving her new softer, cuddly personality sitting with her Dad, Pursely (yes, i know!) teaching all the little ones how to ignore the pops and bangs (well she is deaf but they don't know it!), Lilley and Georgia waiting for their operations in the summerhouse and the Tuftyclub getting cosy in the bedroom.

We like the early light here, the clocks going back help us get going. Tomorrow will bring new surprises, of that there is no doubt.

Sweet dreams, my friends, whichever side of the Bridge you are dreaming on tonight.

Well, its been a GOOD day  ;D

Atlanta's two remaining kittens took two more days and a community effort  Thanks to all the locals who helped get them in, and our amazing vets for helping us get them ready for rehoming. Welcome home Tristran and Charlie Chaplin.  :welcome:

So that's it, the doors creak slowly closed as...

Matilda recovers further whilst Mum Lilleybet, siblings Troy and Marina snuggle up; Atlanta gets to know Ruth; Brendan waits for his owner to show up; Georgia prepares for her mammory lump removal; Betty learns her manners; Charlie, Tristran, Esme and Basil learn about litter training and play and Penelope's birth time grows near, Calypso prepares for her new home and her kittens Flint, Morgan and Patty Fleur thrive under Ana's care;my Sammy settles back in to pillow comfort with his Meowmi.   :) Contentment.

Happy Halloween, Purrs Pals, it's been a very good day  ;)

Thanks for all the lovely and motivational words, everyone.  :thanks:

Today our cache includes newbies Basil, Esmerelda and their Mum Atlanta. Three out of five, with two more kittens yet to be trapped. These are being fed by various folks and communication with the primary feeder, a veritable hermit, is proving tricky. Trying again tomorrow.

We also caught Matilda's Mum and her two siblings, Marina and Prince Troy. Now there's a story Matilda was brought to the vet a few days ago when I happened to be filling out some of the unending forms we need to do, half dead from dehydration, fluey and with no chance of life outside intensive care. Mum is a local stray and chose the doorstep of the nice man who fed her to lay her dying kitten on. She looked at him, then at her kitten, back at him and walked sadly away. He was behind me in the car flashing his lights to get by, he didn't realise the woman who would make the decision on this little girl's life was in the car in front and only when I was invited to speak to them having pledged our support, did David apologise for his behaviour. Frankly it only steeled my resolve to help him get this kitten well again, I dried his tears and assured him I would reserve Matilda for him should she survive.   :care:

And survive she has, now off the IV line, eating, temperature up to normal and playing. She will be on antibiotics and careful monitoring for a while but the little 8 week old who looks more like 5 weeks is through the darkness and into the light. Once Mum is out of her spay we will allow them some time together as Mum has no idea her actions saved her child. A truly amazing mummy and I'll be proud to rehabilitate and rehome this little queen. As a mark of her status I've called her LillyBet, which I understand was our Queen's baby name from her own family.. I think she might quite like to stay with one of her babies, and as Matilda has a twin the very sweet Marina, we may decide she would be happier to keep a kitten by her side.

Anyway, the team are back together, Tad and Mark are off to try and grab the last of the school car park kittens as it's half term,I'll try and get Atlanta's remaining two kittens in and that will be our doors shut for a week or so until we can shift some of these mums and babies.  ;D

Keep as well as you can everyone!

Sheila, just can't say enough in praise of what WF CP do for all these babies, and their Mums and Dads (OK in the case of the Dads it is probably TNR), but you know what I mean, a big :blow kiss: to you All. :wow:

So pleased things looking more positive for Calypso Sheila and do hope Brendan can be helped. I find it so difficult initially assuming an injured cat is a cruelty case as no one in our large family of mainly boys would have dreamed of hurting an animal when we were young altho googling cats being shaved has taken my blinds off sadly about Midnight  :(  I really couldn't cope with seeing such things as frequently as I imagine you do and always send my grateful thanks to all at WFC for all you do

25 toes eh? That's a bit wow  :wow:  Our Ruby only has 22.  Does he have his dew claws on his back legs or can Ruby still be proud of that "achievement"  :)
