Gill, that's the exact same crate I have for the feral TNRs and is perfect - we can always use another, so yes please!

If you could pack it up for me I'll look into getting it collected from you.

Thank you so much, it will get a "life" with us, you can put money on that!

 :thanks: :thanks: :thanks: :thanks: :thanks:

Hope all went well today

Right the cage size is:

36 x 24 x 28 inches high  it has 2 doors one in side 18 1/2 x 22 1/2 inches and one in end 18 1/2 x 19 1/2 inches.

has a full size tray to go in bottom and bars are 1 1/4 inch apart

packs flat including tray and has carry handle............forgot to take picture!

if required/need  small hole plastic mesh could be put round if bars too widely spaced for kittens.  Dont know what high sill is but as you can see in pictures doors open about 5 inches off ground.......guessing!

Sorry no top opening. Took Ducha, litter tray, food and water with space and used to put in puppy pads but was too big to get upstairs and my floor too cold downstairs so bought a slightly smaller one which is still upstairs cos still couldnt hump it up and down stairs.......sigh. The idea was that he would be downstairs during day with me and upstairs at night but..................

Its good quality but no used to me.

ok pics next and due to eye having probs reading  could do with some help in arranging carrier collection and delivery, dont know how heavy but guessimate is no more than 10 kg cos can lift by handle one hand and carry inti next room, so probably a bit lighter. i would need a carrier who could give sat 1 ot 2 hoyr collection slot.

So if you would like it Sheila its your for the cost of postage  ;D ;D

If you need anymore info just ask...............comes with cobwebs lol

I have recently just dumped all cardboard boxes but hppe that I can find sufficienr cardboras lurking to cover.

I'm so sorry to hear about the ringworm - and the fact that the kittens have probably already spread it far and wide. Sounds as if that could be expensive, as well as tiresome :(

I will be thinking of you and Elsa Dolly tomorrow

Hi Gill and  :thanks: :thanks:

The cage needs to be built for kittens - small mesh, high sill, top and side openers, and since Shaw's stopped making them in 2008 (Yes, I found that early Purrs post!) no-one seems to do anything similar within a reasonable price range. Our current Argos dog crates, albeit big enough, don't offer us top down access and the wire mesh is too big for tiny babies who can wriggle between the bars  :scared:

The minimum size really is around 1000mm x 600 x 600 which is just enough to get Mum + babies, litter tray and water /food bowls. I add a separate hanging/radiator bed for mum to escape to and so long as the babies have adequate warmth (heat pad) and protection from draughts whilst she's away this size does suffice, just.

If you send me the dimensions of your cage please, Gill, I'll see if we can use it for our TNR work if not for kittening, and would be delighted to pay postage to bring it in.  :thanks:  ;D

Our issue is that most of our gymslip Mums are feral, so need to be contained lest they escape and we lose them, which would obviously be disastrous for them, their babies, and us :( Feral status also means we need top down access so Mum can be safely (for me and her) isolated from her kittens for mucking out and socialising.

Hence the plans to extend Tufty Towers (aka my summerhouse) to include a sunbathing area, better ventilation and more secure "airlock" style entrance way.

BTW I did not build the summerhouse with this in mind  :shify: No, Honest I didn't! On the contrary it was for me and hubby to enjoy our spare time, but now I don't have any "spare" time it seems a shame to waste a perfectly good building  :evillaugh:

It's not all good news, however. I took Maybelle and Star my ex feral kittens for their second vaccinations today (The Vet opens on Bank Holidays, bless them) and poor Maybelle has a small scab over her eye which I thought was a playfight injury looks - in clinical light - more like ringworm and under UV light Star has it too, so we're once again in lockdown.  :-:

It's too late though, these girls are fully socialised and have been everywhere in the house so they will have spread their fungus far and wide. I have asked for skin scrapings to be analysed but it's pretty nailed, we have ringworm  :(  They've given me cream for the girls, told me to isloate them (yeah, right, in my one up two down) and will let me know in two weeks if the diagnosis is right at which point we would be prescribed a systemic treatment.

I can't wait that long, I know these are CP cats but I have my own brood to consider so I'll be asking my own vet tomorrow when I take Elsa Dolly in for her operation.  :shify:

Violet is booked in for her spay on Wednesday, her four adorable babies are almost ready and will be having their chips and first vaccinations this week.
Two of her babies are not yet reserved so if anyone in the London area is looking for beautiful kittens we have an adorable pair available.

Trapping Wednesday, the last two from the feral colony that refused flat to go into our traps before Christmas, their rescue space is in Lincoln! May be a New Year transport run afoot if my oppo's can catch them. :crossed:

Well, you lot really do know how to make a girl feel her worth  ;D Thank you so much for the kind offers and advice. I still have £40 in the pot and it's going towards one of the kitten pens here:

http://www.metalcote.co.uk/products.html

which seems to be the best folding crate I can find which has a top opening as well as a front door and high front step to stop the wee ones cartwheeling out the door (it needs to fold flat so I can transport it to whichever fosterer needs it, not all the kittens we locate will be reared here at Tufty Towers, but thanks for the recommendation Liz! )  :Luv:

I'll be about £45 short for the cost of this pen once VAT and postage goes on, so if you really have a few quid burning a hole...  :shy:  :thanks: :thanks:

I'm looking into a wish list too, it's a great idea but I'm not sure Amazon offer quite the deals they used to, due to their seriously unfriendly postage charges.

Our major expenditure, once we have all the TNR kit in place, will be advocate spot-ons, which of course are prescription only and therefore need to be supplied at the vet when the cat is taken for neutering.

The TNR neutering operations are funded by the C4 scheme here in London, thankfully, and we're on excellent terms with the scheme's founder and he actively supports our work in the Borough (which is not associated with our Cat's Protection work so we still need  to raise funds for non-neutering costs to deal with parasites and physiological support for the cats whilst they are recovering prior to their release or rehoming. CP will, of course help us with any animal that is found to be sick or in need of remedial help, so long as we comply with their policies we shouldn't have to do much fundraising for veterinary costs outside these mundane supplies.

Royal Canin have stepped in here and I'm about to put an order in - they assist me under their "Recommender" scheme so I get discounts on their products  ;D

Then I'll see if I can strike up a deal with Pets at Home for some litter supplies - you never know until you ask and they've been receptive in the past to local rescue initiatives  ;)

Of course there's Marion who is still interested in the rescue and keen to help out when she can, and I'm grateful to her too.  :)

Overall, I think we're nearly ready  :shify:  ;D

Minty and Milo found a new home at the weekend.  ;D

Just the semi ferals left now, Maybelle and Star, we had lovely cuddles with them on the bed last night, so they're coming along beautifully.

Violet is now reserved and two of her babies, so the two remaining kittens will be ready on 28th Dec.

Miss JT DLH tortie with catitude and the most stunning yellow eyes id still looking. Maybe 2016 will be her year.

Successful re-distribution of a feral family of 8 cats last week brings the total of cats helped by us directly to 56 this year. Not too shabby!

Here I've been contacted by the RM for CP and have a meeting arranged to discuss having our own "branch" status. If not we will be striking out as independents in 2016 and I've spent the money from the Save-a-life draw winnings on a crush cage, a  nurses friend cage and some other equipment to set us up with the "If you're gonna do it, do it right!" attitude.

Now seeking a kittening pen - the five litters we put through this year have been worrying and exhausting not least because the tiny kittens can squeeze between the bars of our TNR crates!

My thanks to you all for nominating us a Purrs Rescue, especially the wonderful Tan for her help and generosity, to Liz for putting me in touch with RC, to the A-Team ladies for your moral support and cheering me on when the going got tough.

A very merry Christmas to you all, from Sheila, Tad, Mark and the team here at Waltham Forest Cats!

 :merry xmas:

Lovely update Sheila.  My word, you have been busy.  I particularly like this bit where I heaved a sigh of relief

... I worry all night that mum might continue her attacks but by morning Mum has settled and is feeding the babies herself once more. :phew:

and this bit where I have my fingers firmly crossed

I also have a lead for a new fosterer in my sights  ;D I'm hoping to make a little time to go see him (yes, you read that right!  :) ) tomorrow.  :crossed: Maybe he will like Emily and be able to convince her babies to be nice too.

A bit worried about this one though  :scared:

Suddenly the only obstacle is hubby's long face "i thought you said no more kittens....."

   to all, including hubby.  Doesn't he know there are ALWAYS more kittens.  :shify:

Big rescue operation yesterday, we found a litter of 4 kittens in a garden, the lady reported that she had not seen the mum for a couple of days.  :scared:

Almost simultaneously we discover the local cat hoarder had trapped a female cat she wanted to keep as she believed her to be pregnant.  >:(

2+2=4 yes? Trapped cat is not pregnant - but lactating - and had been incarcerated since TUESDAY  :hairrasin:

Firm words issued and not without something of a fight we recover ownership of the cat and whizz her to the local vet for a quick teat check and sure enough she's not pregnant but has so much milk she looks it.

OK, cat back in carrier and off to find the kittens, within seconds of placing mum's carrier in the vicinity of the kittens we have mewling and scrabbling, then a very fraught 30 minutes whilst the keystone cops get these four babies into baskets, then off to the vet again for urgent health checks.
They're cold - the littlest is 425g and only 36 degrees body temp. She's a teeny black girl aged about 5 weeks. She's weak, covered in fleas, anaemic, starving, de-hydrated, and gorgeous.

Her three brothers, one black and feisty, two beautiful tabbies, all in similar condition, the black boy has a gunky eye, we all hold our breath "oh please gods, not the flu, not again"  :scared:

Vet Klaartje (our current Vet Angel) is off today as it is her birthday, but she opens up after hours regardless to see these babies and I'm so grateful and relieved. De-flead to counter the anaemia. Get them home, get them warm, get them wormed and fed and see how they get on.

Back at mine they're reunited at last (Mum had poo'd everywhere in her stress) but she's so upset she attacks the babies. They stink of flea treatment, she hasn't seen them since Tuesday, shes angry, scared, full of milk, irrational  :-:

I sit with her for a couple of hours and make sure the babies at least get some kitten gruel - mashed up kitten food, complivit and warm water. They devour it and finally settle to sleep in a heap in the corner of the crate. I worry all night that mum might continue her attacks but by morning Mum has settled and is feeding the babies herself once more. :phew:

So, Mum, a petite 3.5kg all black sleek female with huge green eyes, i've name her Emily after my gorgeous niece, seems so much happier today.  :) Our amazing sponsor Marion pitches up with 8 boxes of kitten food, two chickens and a bag of kibble. An equally brilliant Purrs Lady sent us a heat pad which is helping to thaw the four little frozen bums.

I've named the single female kitten Cherry, the tabby boys will be Willie & Scottie and the black boy is Link.

Suddenly the only obstacle is hubby's long face "i thought you said no more kittens....."

Meanwhile, Whiskey the Post Office cat has been returned, spayed, chipped and better than new.  ;D

Four of her beautiful kittens are being rehomed this weekend, I have Whiskey's no.5 Dewey (now named Milo) to pair up with Minty (of course I'm not keeping her!) and they're getting on just fine.

The two remaining feral kittens Maybelle and Star are almost there, we now have purrs and they are fully chikkun trained, non-aggressive and occasionally loving so they too will be going up for adoption this weekend.

I also have a lead for a new fosterer in my sights  ;D I'm hoping to make a little time to go see him (yes, you read that right!  :) ) tomorrow.  :crossed: Maybe he will like Emily and be able to convince her babies to be nice too.

Another 2 kittens re-located to Niall at New Hope today.

Next weekend is the biggie we have 5 kittens and one adult female (Whiskey) due to go to their forever homes.

Currently three garden kittens are in residence here, two semi feral one one real sweetie I've called Minty, all black, tiny (8 weeks) came running out from a hedge whilst we were out trapping the feral adults. Of course I'm not keeping her! Of course I'm not keeping her! OF COURSE I'M NOT KEEPING HER!

What a great update Sheila.   We miss you being around, and I'm cross that your new job entails such a lengthy commute, but what a fantastic role you're performing in respect of WFCLUK,   ;D

Great that you have a new volunteer, and I'm also made up about GI Joe.   :Luv:

We now have two hiss-spits of our own, and we're making slow progress with them in the way of complete novices.  Taking them to the vet is the worst, as they bear a grudge afterwards, and gauntlets have to be worn to get Malt into a carrier.   A bit like Mrs Beeton's recipe for rabbit pie - "first, catch your rabbit....."  I wish you every success with yours.  Theresa will be cheering you on.

Happy update! Yayy

All of Theresa's babies were found exceptional homes, I'm delighted.  ;D Theresa herself has been returned, spayed, chipped and vaccinated (on me) to her mum, sister and brothers.  :Luv: :Luv: :Luv: :Luv:

We've also been blessed by a new fosterer stepping up, welcome Annette to our fold, she joins me, Tad, K, Carole, Rebekah, Rachel, Mark and Emma. We happy few.  ;D

We have 5 kittens ready from 11.12.15 with the wonderful Emma.  :)

Four more babies ready from boxing day with the amazing Tad.  :)

I'm very happy to deliver the news that both mums are reserved  :wow:

Since I last posted i've had another family of semi ferals in. Peggy is a tiny striped queen, i've found her a home with New Hope Rescue and shes on her way there tomorrow. Her hiss spit babies went  the vet today, all 4 girls are 10 weeks old with catitude. I'm working on OH to let me bring them indoors when Mum has gone tomorrow (its sooo cold, theyre sooo tiny pleeeeeeeeese???) as they need to gain confidence around people.

Once again, my rescue pals i turn to you for guidance - help me "finish" these rough around the edges girls?  da best

Thank you Liz for giving me a heads up re sponsorship, I've been in touch with Sian and am following this up  :thanks:

My loyal pal Marion has also been helping out in the moral support category, bless she's eve bought me a Christmas Pud!  :xmas5:

The group has also rehomed a further 4 stray cats and trapped another gymslip mother and her kids which Celia Hammond has generously dealt with for us.

GI Joe, notwithstanding his awful sweary, evasive attitude has wormed his way into his feeder's heart and although we have a rescue space for him at New Hope, Laura would be grieving - so she's going to keep him.

Joe's hut has been fitted with a catflap and insulation. This weekend will be his first as a non-rescuable cat. I'm a very happy failure  :Luv:  :na na na:

Wow, Tan that's just amazing and thank you!
 ;D ;D

We're still affiliated to Central London CP branch but are hoping to strike out on our own once we've got all the necessary training and skills. This should be in the New Year. :crossed:
I'm focusd on my new job for the time being and will have more time working from home to allow greater commitment to the Rescue once I've finished bring mentored.

Meanwhile we have two beautiful babies almost ready to fly the coop, Theresa's babies Robbie and Lola will be nine weeks old and ready to go just after Bonfire night (my decision that one) so here's a little taster for you.  http://youtu.be/oIOc3fH6gFk

Well done on the rehomings and somehow managing to keep your little miracles alive Sheila.  Fingers crossed Lorna starts to put on weight soon.

Ligament injury sounds not good at all Mrs     Very much hope something can be done to help you on 29th.

A big   for your OH stepping up to the plate and your CP pals of course.
