Oh Susanne.  That has me in bits.  My heart aches for you.   :'( :'(

Jaffa was such a beautiful boy, throughout his life, and I suspect he wouldnt have swapped Mosi, his lively little buddy, not for all the tea in China.

Susanne, that is a beautiful tribute to your lovely ginger boy. My eyes are leaking, partly in empathy with your grief but also because it reminds me of my own ginger boy who left me nearly 4 years ago - and is still missed, every day.

Jaffa my precious boy - I hope you have arrived at Rainbow Bridge and are now reunited with Magpie.  My 2 boys playing together again like you did all those years ago when you were both kittens.

I don't know how to fully pay tribute to you because there are no words to describe how special you were.  Beautiful, gentle, loving and a real mummy's boy.  You are missed so much.

Do you remember the day we first met?  August 6th 1997 at Leigh Animal Rescue.  I went to look for 2 kittens and really wanted black and white or tabbies.  But there you were - a little ball of ginger fluff running around.  My heart melted the minute I saw you and when you were placed in my arms you looked up and gave me that take me home look and the deal was sealed.  After choosing Magpie to come with us we went home and the first thing you did when lifted out of your carrier was to rub your head against my hand and start to purr.  You spent your first evening cuddled up to me on the sofa.  Once you found your feet, you did the usual kitten stuff and had a few norty moments that Mosi would be proud of!  But you were a mummy's boy from the start weren't you?  Always loving strokes and cuddles and always wanting attention.  Never happier than when playing or having cuddles.  You were so handsome and the stripes on your paws inspired your full name of Jaffa Cake Stripey Paws

You grew into such a sweet natured boy.  Always a bit nervous of strangers and strange places, but a happy, healthy boy who made me smile every day.  You were playful, affectionate and a pleasure to have around.  There was always a very special bond between us wasn't there?  It's often said that cats are more attached to their places than their people, but with you it was definitely the other way around.  You loved to run and play but you also loved your home comforts and were never happier than when curled up somewhere cosy and being stroked.

Then came that very sad day when Magpie left us - October 25th 2005.  We were both heartbroken.  You gave me so much comfort and I don't know how I would have managed without you.  You were so sad for months afterwards and wouldn't let me out of your sight.  We helped each other.  In the middle of your grief I bundled you into a box and took you on a 3 hour journey to stay at your grandmeowmy's house for Christmas.  You coped so well with it all and I was incredibly proud of you.  When we got home you were more like your usual self and shortly afterwards I decided to get you a new friend to play with.  And so Hurricane Mosi entered both our lives!  I'm so sorry for all the problems this caused but I know you got on well most of the time and you had some fun together.  I did mislead you a bit by telling you he'd soon grow out of his kitten behaviour!  He always just wanted to be your friend and he misses you very much.

You slowed down over the past few years but were still a happy, healthy, loving boy.  Looking back there were a few signs that your health wasn't perhaps the best, but you seemed well and happy at the time.  So it came as a horrible shock when you became so ill.  It broke my heart to watch you suffer but you did so well and I am so glad that we have been able to share the past few months.  I treasured every night I slept with you by my side and every morning I woke to your happy purrs.  We celebrated your 17th birthday and looked forward to more happy days.  Then came the day when I knew you were ready to go and join Magpie.  Sooner than I'd hoped but I knew that after all those years together I owed you this final gift - to let you go and run free in a place where there is no pain and no suffering.  I can still feel your soft fur on my lips and long to give you just one more kiss.  I miss you so much, Jaffa, my most precious little gingerbread man.  You will be forever in my heart and time will not dim my love for you.  Sleep tight Sir Jaffa Cake Stripey Paws.  We will meet again soon.

Thank you.  I can't quite grasp that he is gone.  He was such a mummy's boy it seems odd to not have a cat cuddled up to me at night and during the evening.  Mosi is affectionate but he's more independent and doesn't usually sleep on the bed at night.

His passing was very calm and peaceful and I'm grateful for that as he hated going to the vet but he wasn't too distressed, probably because he was a bit out of it.  He was so sweet when I was spending those last few moments alone with him at the vet, and walking around on the table that I really wanted to say I'd changed my mind and wanted to take him home for at least another night but I knew I needed to let him go and run free.

I will write a proper tribute to my special boy and move this thread to the bridge when I feel a bit stronger.

Susanne, I am so very sad to hear that dear Jaffa has gone.  Like many here I have a very soft spot for ginger cats and in particular for Jaffa.  It is clear from your posts that he was so dearly loved, and no cat could wish for more than that.  You gave him extraordinarily good care, and a wonderful life, and you had the courage to make the right choice at the end.  My love goes to you, and to Mosi.

I lost my Somali girl to CRF nearly a year ago, and recall the agonies of making the final decision to let her go, the pain of knowing what was coming, and that it was unavoidable. I can talk about her now without crying, but it has taken a long time to get to that stage.

As agonising as it is, you made a brave decision for him, and the right one I'm sure

RIP Jaffa, safe and sound at the Bridge by now x

The Greatest Gift

I always knew this time would come,
From the very instant our eyes first met.
How I loved you then! How I love you now!
I made a promise then, and I will keep that promise now...
You will not suffer from a pain that will not heal;
You will not know the loss of a life remembered, now gone.

It is for me alone to make this decision,
The price for the bright joy and pure laughter
You brought me during the time we shared.
I am the only one who can decide when it is time.
When my hope dies, and my fear rides high,
Just when I need you most, I must let you go.

It is for you alone to tell me when you are ready
For without your guidance, I will not know
When to lay my grief, my guilt, my anger
My sorrow and my selfish heart aside
And give you this last gift, this greatest gift.
Your eyes will speak to mine, and I will know.

The pain of this moment is excruciating.
Tears stream down my face in a river of sorrow.
And my heart drowns in a pool of grief.
For you have spoken and I have listened,
And unlike other decisions I have made
This one brings no relief...no comfort...no peace.

For if there´s one thing you´ve taught me,
If there´s only one thing I´ve learned...
Unconditional love has a condition after all,
I must be willing to let you go, when you speak to me
I must be willing to help you go, if you cannot go alone.
And I must accept my pain so you can be free of yours.

Go easily now, go quickly now,
Do not linger here, it is time for you to leave.
Go find your strength, go find your youth.
Go find the ones who've gone before you.
You are free to leave me now, free to let your spirit soar
Rest easy now, your pain will soon be gone.

I pray I will find comfort in my memories...
In the dark and lonely days ahead.
I cannot say I will not miss you, I cannot say I will not cry.
For only my tears can heal my broken heart.
But, I promise you this; as long as I live,
You will live, alive in my mind, forever in my heart.

So I give you this last gift, all I have left to give,
And this will be my greatest gift...sending you away.
It is the measure of my unconditional love...
For only the greatest love can say,
"Good-bye, go find the bridge, we'll meet again,
Loving you has been the greatest gift of all."

Forever and Always... Until Rainbow bridge....

Jaffa is booked in at the vets for 12pm tomorrow to make that final journey.  I am hoping and praying he rallies from this and I can delay the inevitable but I know in my heart of hearts that this is the end.
