Lump and swollen face - so worried
« Reply #31 on: February 03, 2014, 19:39:31 PM »
Thanks Slugsta :)

The swelling had almost disappeared this morning and it's gone now. I just put a blob of mayonnaise on his tablet and he are it so I didn't have to open his mouth and force it in. He goes mad for anything creamy so I knew mayo would do the trick!

Still more stuff coming out of the wound. The scab looks a bit looser but still too sore looking to take it off

I am so glad that this is nothing serious and hope that Meeko is soon back to normal.

Alfie had an abscess on his tail a little while ago - you can tell who does the running away!

I'll hope for no abscesses for your kitties, Gill.

Strangely, there was a cat beside us in the waiting room this morning with an abscess too, but her face was muuuuch more swollen than Meeko's. I'd have freaked completely if his had got that bad

Why the hell didnt the vet give him a convenia jab! It lasts two weeks and no need for oral abs and absolutely great for abcesses.

I will have to watch Misa and Lupin cos they are fighting and noticed last night that Misa is so fed up at being jumped on he is wopping harder..........I dont need any abcess here!

Ok I'll stick with your advice, thank you. The scab is still very tight to the skin so I couldn't get it off yet but I'll keep an eye on it when I bathe him.

Meeko is a gentle big puss. The vet couldn't believe I'd been bathing his abscess and didn't have a scratch on me! He's not happy and tries to get away but I can do most things with him without any problem. We all call him our big teddy bear for good reason! I was proud as punch today when the vet kept saying how good he was. The only time he flinched was getting his temperature taken.

I would be careful using hibiscrub near the mouth as I don't think it is supposed to be ingested.  For now I would just stick with bathing with warm water and try squeezing any muck out if he'll let you.

I know it's revolting but if you are able to get the scab off this will aid in the healing process as you can get all the gunk and puss out but of course this all depends on whether you have a softie like my Zephyr who will let me do just about anything to him cuz I'm his mummy or whether your lad is a bit more feisty.

I'll look into that stuff. Thank you Sam. Would hibiscrub be better than salt water in the meantime?

Zephyr had an abscess a couple of weeks ago .... on the top of his head!!!!!  Obviously either Foxy or Rossi had smacked him and scratched him   I only noticed when his face had swollen and his eye was half closed.  I found the lump and the tiny little scab which I picked off to relase all the stinky muck inside.  After a quick squeeze and wipe with warm, damp cotton wool I sprayed the hole with Leucillin ... I repeated the exercise a couple of days later just to make sure there was no more muck, another ssquirt of Leucillin and within 2 days it was all healed.

I can not recommend this stuff enough ..... It can be used on ALL mammals (including people) and is safe to use on eyes, mouths and all wounds.  Definitely alot cheaper than visiting the vet that's for sure and better than salty water which can leave fur all sticky  >:(

Definitely an abscess. He had an antibiotic injection and has a course of 10 noroclav 50mg to take. So relieved my big teddy bear doesn't have anything sinister! Thanks for the help and advice everyone. Much appreciated xx

Yeah mine are in most of the time. They go out for an hour or so during the day. In this weather he's much happier sprawled out in front of the fire!

I squeezed a tiny bit but didn't want to push it when I wasn't sure it was the right thing to do. I'll ring the vet first thing and hopefully get him in for the morning surgery.

Thanks everybody. I'm a much more relieved mammy tonight!

def sounds like an abscess, bad smell and yellowy discharge. Once it has drained he will feel better, but will need antibiotics to heal it, otherwise it might keep filling up again.  hope he feels better soon.

Sounds like it's on the right track!!! Will he stay indoors?? (Ted won't) If so, keep bathing it and see how he goes tonight. Ted has been known to regrow his abscesses and then burst them again!! If he'll let you squeeze it to drain, then crack on!!

I just bathed it again in salt water and as soon as I touched it there was yellowy-brown pus and then some blood. I gave it all a good soak in warm salt water. Does that sound like a good sign? He wasn't happy but let me do it

The way Teddy's eye is is exactly how Meeko's is. Thanks a million everyone. I feel much better about it all so hopefully the vet will say it's just an abscess and with meds he'll be grand. Need my Meekster healthy and happy!

Cancer develops very slowly, I really think this is more likely to be an abscess.

This is Teddy who is what the vet describes as impossible.  One pic is with abscess,  one without. Before I could get him to the vet, he had scratched the thing open, leaving stinky ick all over the place. I keep saline solution around (the stuff for contact lenses) and when he burst this,  wiped his face with cotton pad and saline. Vet then said it looked clean and no need for ab. Now when he gets them, I tend to give it  a few days before I panic. But he is impossible!!!!

Aw thanks, Gill. You've probably not seen him since he was a kitten.

I'm reassured by the bad smell then. More confident that it's not the c word

Thank you both very much. I rang the vet but because he's bright and eating he won't see him today.

I've just been getting headbutts and there is a bad smell coming from the sore on his little face

If he has been scratched by Daisy (even just a tiny little puncture) there's a chance he he got a bit of an abscess.  Cat's claws are crawling with germs.  I agree with Gill, just keep an eye on him and if he will let you clean the scratch, use a bit of cotton wool and warm (slightly salty) water.  I would try and get him into the vet in the morning ;)

I don't think he could have been attacked in the very short time he was outside. Not unless my Daisy has hit or clawed him.

He's as bright as a button otherwise. He ate all his food and some leftover roast chicken. I can't see anything that looks unusual with his teeth but it's hard to see without touching the lump and hurting him.

As long as he is eating and acting normal and doesnt seem to have a temperature I would keep an eye on him and get him to a vet tomorrow, later today.

He may have hurt himself out side , could he have been attacked by another cat>

Are you able to see if he has damaged any teeth?

As long as no other probs he should be ok for the next few hours

Don't know how to edit my post by phone but I meant to say his ears are cold so I don't think he's got a temperature. He's just had a few Dreamies and is laying on my leg purring as I type.

Meeko has a lump on his chin, just beneath the lip and it seems to hurt when I touch it. I think the left side of his face is swollen a tiny bit because the eye on that side looks smaller than the other.

I don't think he was like this this morning. I woke up with a splitting headache, fed the cats and went back to bed. I'm positive it wasn't there last night though, I was cuddling him before I went to sleep and I always scratch his chin cos he loves it.

He was out in the back yard for 5 minutes this morning but other than that has been in all day. He's in great form though. A hungry hippo as usual, eager for his food and eating normally. Cuddly and purring like an engine the way he always does.

Dr Doom that I am I'm sat here in bits worrying about cancer. Does anyone know if a cancer lump would come up that quickly? Obviously he'll be at the vet asap but I'm worried sick. (Is it just mine or do all cats take not well on weekends and bank holidays!?)
