Mad about ad in Your Cat magazine

I have also seen that ad on numerous occasions before (think it's in pretty much every month) and it never fails to disgust me.

Really?  I've never noticed it before.  I usually scan the breeder ads but have never noticed this ad before.  I know they cant check out everyone who advertises and there are probably some breeders advertising who aren't reputable breeders, but this ad is clearly from someone who breeding non pedigrees and since the magazine frequently features rescues I'd have thought it would not want to allow this kind of set up to advertise.  I'd also guess that since they're advertising the cats as look a likes that they will be charging quite a lot of money for them and ripping off those who want a pedigree but can't afford it so reckon a bengal look a like for £150 is the next best thing

When I first saw it I was very surprised that Your Cat would publish such an ad considering they would have everyone believe that they care deeply about cats and yet publish ads from backstreet breeders

Good luck in getting a response Susanne. While Hippy is right that they should hopefully get better care than people who let moggies breed, they are ruining breeds, and there are certain breeds like Bengals and Persians that end up in rescues too often cos the owners can't keep up with their requirements, and the breeders are at fault there, and ads like this dont help.

I won't start this debate here.

I think it could get too heated, I am with you on this . Sadly we are being offered more and more Pedigrees and many for the same reasons as the moggies. Also some have apparently come from breeders homes that are almost kitten farms. Fortunately as I have found out this weekend there are quite a few specialist rescues, although I suspect not nearly enough.

Although I don't agree with pedigree breeding, and would prefer peeps to take in rescue cats, at least a good pedigree breeder takes care of the mother and kittens, having them wormed, FLV checked and keeping them in decent conditions. Whereas people who breed from non pedigrees tend, on the whole, to take less care of them, as they have less financial worth. Though, to me, buying and selling any animal is abhorrent. I won't start this debate here. Pedigree breeders do have a reputation to maintain.

also if this is a back street breeder i dont think they are considering the back-lash they will recieve from this kind of advetising!!!!

Atleast making them aware of what may be happening should give them some food for thought

I don't wish to start a debate about breeding and pedigree cats, but I think we all agree that the deliberate breeding of non pedigree cats is not something to be encourged.  I was, therefore, rather dismayed to find the following ad amongst the pedigree kittens for sale ads in June's edition of Your Cat:

Cross Breeds

Mature Kittens and young adult non-pedigrees from look-alike British, Bengal, Burmese and Persian.  Ultra friendly, smooth or fluffy.  Every colour almost.

Your Cat will be getting a letter/email from me about this.  No doubt they'll defend it saying that they just sell the advertising space and so long as it's not illegal they can't stop it, but I don't think they should priint those kind of ads as it sounds very much like a kitten farm/backyard breeder to me.
