Hi,
I was hoping someone here could shed some light, and possibly a solution, to why one of our three year old cats randomly takes poops on our floor instead of the litter trays.
She was brought up with her sister from when they were kittens to use a litter tray (we have two litter trays), she has been using trays fine for all these years (albeit from the odd mishap now and again) but in recent months she started to take a shining to pooping on the floor (mainly the laminate floor next to one of the litter trays).
She doesn't do this all the time, now and again she will happily poop in a tray but she has never covered it up, she just walks out and scratches on the floor instead to simulate covering up the poop. Also when she does use the tray, nine times out of ten she will poop right at the edge of it and sometimes over the corner. I will note now though that she never urinates outside of the tray, and she usually covers this up.
We have a hooded tray and a non hooded tray in separate rooms and we are currently using catsan litter in both. They are both away from any loud noises and from their eating/drinking area. We regularly clean up any mess in the tray as soon as they use it and we change out the litter and thoroughly clean the trays every week or so, or whenever they look dirty or smelly.
We have tried numerous things in the past to try and rectify the problem but eventually she will go back to pooping on the floor again at random times for no reason (well in our heads anyway). List of things we have tried include, but not limited to:
- Various types of litter (clumping, non clumping)
- More than two litter trays
- Different sized litter trays
- Added cat attract to the litter
- Plug-in Feliway in the area of the trays
- Putting a tray down where she usually poops
- Putting the poop back in the tray and showing her how it's done
- Changed food to different types
We are running out of ideas to try and feel like this is it for ever! What else can we do to stop this from happening?
Please help!
