Excellent news - sample is clear, no blood or anything in the sample, so hopefully everything can now go back to normal  :wow:

I've been desperately hunting for some  :censored: Sellotape to create my wee catch-pit, which is something that hasn't emerged from moving house yet...and while hunting yesterday evening, sir strolled into the litter tray and did a giant wee.  I tried to pop a little tub behind him but as he squeezes it up the wall, I didn't manage to catch any.  So still no wee sample, and a freshly emptied bladder!

Oooh now there's an idea...I will need to be able to have it up off the base of the box as otherwise Milly could potentially wee on it, whereas if I fashion something like a bib a bit higher up, only Geoffrey will wee there.  Think I'll go and have a play and see what I can get to work  :wow:

If you tape some cling film to the back wall and drape it into the litter box could you collect a sample that way?

So pleased he's feeling better, its such a worry when they're sick.

My boy is very definitely back  :wow: his eyes look normal again now and normal service constantly whining for food and attention has resumed  :evillaugh: Protexin are definitely wonder pills! Still haven't managed to get a wee sample though, he's cottoned on to the fact that he gets shut in with me at night and if he holds on long enough he will get let out in the morning to do his wee without having to use the plastic balls.  As he sprays up the back of the litter tray I'm wondering whether I could tape the wee pot up the back corner and see if I can get it filled that way  :shify:

Geoffrey is better still this evening :wow: and he's being a pest for food again.  I can only imagine that this past week he has felt like he has had food poisoning, but he's definitely on the mend now.  Fingers crossed it stays that way!

Very pleased to hear this  ;D

I bet this explains the change:

http://www.protexinvet.com/pet-health/362/general-faqs  Scroll down to 'what makes a good probiotic' and it says that " Within the EU all probiotics must be registered for use in an individual animal species.  For example, Enterococcus faecium (NCIMB 10415) E1707 is registered for use in dogs."

So I reckon a few years ago there was a change in EU regulation as above, and while this particular strain of bacteria is registered for use in dogs, it isn't for cats so they aren't allowed to claim on the labelling that it has health benefits for cats even though actually nothing has changed in practice.  If the same is true here as it is with rabbits which it probably is (especially given all the literature about the use of c.faecium in cats) it's nothing to do with safety, but probably just the cost/faff is prohibitive for them to bother registering it with cats so they rely on people using the prescribing cascade for its ongoing use.

Geoffrey is better still this evening :wow: and he's being a pest for food again.  I can only imagine that this past week he has felt like he has had food poisoning, but he's definitely on the mend now.  Fingers crossed it stays that way!

Are they capsules? Thats what Lupin had but online they are now saying dogs only

Yes that's them.  I'm so used to using things off licence for the bunnies that to be honest I never really bat an eyelid at using a product aimed at a different species...I suspect that it's something to do with a technical paperwork requirement rather than a 'real' reason they're no longer suggesting use in cats on their bumpf.  Have you ever contacted them to find out why?  I've just done a quick google search on the bacteria in it and although this is a biased article, it does say (and cite) that multiple studies have shown its benefits in both dogs and cats http://www.purinavets.eu/uk/no-messing/PDFs/related_articles/PVD_2.13.8_FF_KOL_Newsletter.pdf and purina sell fortiflora for cats which contains the same bacteria, so personally unless there was a jolly good reason otherwise, I'd probably just carry on using it anyway  :shify:

Geoffrey is quite cheerful this morning, he spent all night right in the middle of the bed with me desperately trying to get comfy around him.

I've finally been allowed to get up  :evillaugh:  they're protexin synbiotic, I've had them before I think, they sound familiar anyway.  Geoffrey seems more cheerful this evening and is actually asking for food, so that's progress too  :wow:

Thanks all. OH has stayed at home with him today and says he has perked up a bit, so that's good. Vet rang, the pancreatic blood test was normal, so she suspects that it's the abx he has had for the infection which have upset his tummy. She's given me some anti-nausea tablets and some probiotics so fingers crossed it's 'just' that the aggressive abx to treat his kidney infection have upset his gut flora.  I do feel happier knowing that his bloods are heading back to normal at least. Thanks for all the good wishes x x

No wee overnight, plenty of diarrhoea though. I remember now, the vet said yesterday that he had a very gurgly tummy, so when he went and hid when we got home from the vet he probably just had a very nasty tummy ache.  I don't think it has all come out yet but some of it has, so I think he is starting to feel a bit better.  He's eaten a little breakfast and has now gone back under the bed  :(

Well highs and lows - the good news is that his creatinine levels are back to within normal range, but he has lost 400g in the past 11 days   So she's running a pancreatitis blood test and will let me know the results tomorrow.  He had one the first time he had the bloods taken and it was clear, but because there was about a week between his first visit and the first bloods, she thinks it's possible that he had an episode which had cleared by the time we ran the bloods and has now had another one so thought it worth repeating.  I'm going to try and get a urine sample overnight too.

She's also given him an anti-nausea injection which won't last all that long but we thought it was worth a go to see if that perks him up overnight as he's clearly feeling nauseous - and even more so now after the car journey to the vets and back.   Of course it's always possible that the antibiotics themselves have been working to clear the kidney infection hence those bloods returning to normal, but they have also made him feel poorly.   I just want my poor little man back to normal  :'(
