Glad to hear there has been some improvement .... hopefully she is just battered and bruised and one the swelling goes down she will start to become more mobile.

I agree with Lynn I would try and push for an Xray as this will show if there are any broken bones.

she could be faecally and or urinary incontinent even with feeling in her legs so only a few days monitoring will give any indication of that.

Your vet doesnt seem to "pro active" to be honest and whilst x rays will not show up nerve damage they would show up any spinal damage that may be contributing or causeing nerve damage.

A veterinary university/hospital or orthopaedic specialist would definately be something to look into and seek 2nd opinions.

I do not want to give off vibes of no hope neither do i want to give false hope. Time is going to be a big factor here and i'd also try and either see if you can go and spend time with her there, or atleast find out how much time a nurse is spending...cats will respond much better and heal with tlc not being left in a kennel on their own. Or perhaps next week even if she hasnt full use of legs you could ask about the chances of getting her home for a couple of days in a cage to nurse and see if that makes any odds. (providing you'd be there to tend her of course)

If she was going to be paralysed and incontinent she would have no feeling at all in her back legs, it would be a bit like a human having had an epidural. She feels pain, which indicates that her spinal column is intact, though she's maybe bruised the vertebrae. You really need one of the VN's on the site to help you with this.

IF, in the worse scenario, she does have severe spinal damage, this isn't necessarily terminal. Some dogs who have lost the use of their back legs get around on trolleys, and she could wear nappies. But from what you've said, it won't come to this.

Personally, I think she'll recover, eventually. I don't want to get your hopes up too much, but it's best to stay positive. The only real danger, in my opinion, would be if she has damage to her internal organs and heamorrages (sp?). Maybe your vet is just preparing you for the worst, but don't be bullied by him.

Thanks, Michelle. I replied to your PM. Like I said, I've been on the phone to the nearest Veterinary hospital. They said if it's spinal damage there really isn't anything they can do, cos she'd be left paralysed and completely incontinent.

I feel so much better already though. The vet sounding positive has given me a good feeling. I know she's by no means okay yet, but I feel more optimistic than I have done.

The babies are eating and playing away, although they're still looking for her. Daisy's lying sunning herself at the window beside me at the moment.

So glad Rosie's okay, Rosie'smum.

Not saying that your vet isnt doing his best but they would have more equiment and highly trained specialists.

I am so sorry to hear what has happened, I have only just come accross your post.

I am Rosie's Mum, my cat was savaged 4 weeks ago by 2 dogs that were left unsupervised. She had major crush injuries to her head and her stomach was ripped and needed in excess of 70 stitches.

It was touch and go but she will make a full recovery - cats heal very very quickly. If you have doubts about your vet, I would definately suggest getting a second opnion. I say this as I was told that Rosie would need a secon operation, her injuries would be very difficult to deal with etc - this was from my locum vet who saw Rosie one weekend as I was worried about her.

On the Monday I took Rosie to see my regular vet with the view to having her PTS, who told me the opposite. He refused to PTS as he said she was strong and wanted a fighting chance for her. The improvemnet in her was amazing, she has her stitches removed yesterday and is well on the road to recovery so much so that I don't need to taker her back now for any treatment unless I have any concerns for her.

If you need a chat, pm me, there are ways and means to get the dogs owners details. The Police will not get involved but your local dog warden can issue a verbal warning as it is illegal for a dog to be off a lead in a public place.

Wonderful news, We had over the years taken in a few cats who have gone what Jasmine has, some have seemed like it was almost impossible to win the battle of life. I cannot recall one that did not.

Right, the vet just rang. She has "reasonable feeling" in one of her legs, and some in the other. So he said that's an improvement. He wants her kept in to be monitored for a few days. They also need to see if she can go to the toilet, as some spinal damage can leave them unable to do that. She hasn't been given any x-rays, as he doesn't think it's bone damage, and nerves and spinal problems wouldn't show up on an x-ray. Plus it would mean putting her under anaesthesia. I so sorry this has happen, Karen. Stay strong for her.

From my understanding, your vet if definitely WRONG to pts so soon. The longer she's alive, the more she'll heal.
Feeling pain in the back legs must indicate no severe spinal damage, otherwise her back legs would be numb and paralysed. I wonder whether she has broken her legs, or damaged her pelvis. Both of these CAN be treated successfully.

Unless she has serious internal damage, she should get through this.

The main thing is to give her time. Don't let the vet pts.

Unfortunately some vets are less willing to try hard for cats than they are for dogs. He may be that type. Insist that he gives her longer, at least a couple of weeks, maybe longer than that. This will provide more chance to assess her condition and for her to fight back, and fight she will, she knows she has kittens.

I don't like the sound of your vet, and if it was possible, I'd consult someone else. Moving her may not be wise, but this guy doesn't seem willing to put himself out for her. Any chance of another vet? Even if you have to take her by taxi and incur enormous costs, she's insured, so you know the vet fees will be paid.

It's hard at such an upsetting time, but FIGHT for her. Don't be bullied.

It this the vets near to you hun? I know it's difficult for you as the other vet is miles away and you don't drive but yes see what the vet says then ring round others if he is insisting pts. Get all the info you can hun.

My vet advised PTS with my Issey but i said i wanted to try everything and so he referred her to a specialist, thank God i pushed as she is still here to tell the tail.

If she has a spinal or pelvic injury, time is usually a great healer........2 cats I had in had no use of their back legs and the causes were unknown but after some tlc and cage rest, both were fine. Fingers crossed for her, xxxxxxxxxx

I would go into the vets and talk to them face to face, rather than on the phone.

I am gonna do my very best to be assertive. I don't want to let her down. I'm planning to write down what I want to ask before I ring, get a full picture of what's going on, then if they insist it's bad news I'll ring round other vets to see what they say.

I'm not near Dublin, unfortunately, well about 2 1/2 hour drive away. Thank you very much though.

The thing I just can't get my head round is how her having feeling back in her legs can possibly be a bad thing. It just makes zero sense to me. Now I'm thinking maybe I misheard with the state I was in but I'm 90% positive he said it was a "very bad sign"

Daisy, Belle and Meeko are ok, they are looking for her though. I can hardly look at them without bursting into tears.

The vet mentioned nothing about a broken back, he said it could be spinal or pelvic injury, so it's possible I suppose. It was just how negative he was that's getting to me. There was no "if it's x, then we could do y or z" he just jumped straight into the pts thing.

As they prob still cuddle up to her at night put a teddy bear in for them tonight, just something to cuddle up to.

Also if Jasmine is going to be away for a few days you might need to supplement them with some kitten milk.

Just echoing what everyone else has said, don't blame yourself. It's not your fault. Don't give up on Jasmine, get a second opinion if necessary, at least you know the insurance will cover the cost of the vets.

I must say that vets at times have a terrible habit of just saying the worst case scenario and tearing our hearts to bits without giving us any hope ................as everyone has said we are all thinking of you and I'm sure Jasmine knows she is the luckiest little baby to have you as a mummy and the babies waiting for her at home

Karen just caught up with this thread ... DO NOT blame yourself for this ... it was most definitely NOT your fault hun.

Like Lynn says the vet can't do anything without your permission so don't let them bully or pressure you into anything. If you are unsure of anything they are telling you ask them to write down everything then come back kon here and ask for advice ... as you know there are lenty of people on here who will be more then willing to help you out (even if it's only to help explain things).

Karen do you have any friends or family who will speak up for you more. dont be brow beaten hun, jasmine is YOUR cat and she is insured and you have the RIGHT to say what happens to her. The vet cant do anything without your permission...remember YOUR CAT YOUR MONEY !!!!

Perhaps she does have serious injury but i feel it is to early to say that just yet, unless of course the vet can feel something drastic such as a totally broken back or something but i'm sure if that was the case you'd have said so already.

Lets wait and see what tomorrow says and we must all pray the xrays dont reveal too much problems.

How are jasmines babys coping, thankfully they are old enough they should cope well on their own but i susect they will be wondering where their mum is

It def not your fault, she was in your own home and the dog attacked her there. It is the dog owners fault definitely for not having the dog on a lead and he can be prosecuted for it.

He was planning to do the x-ray tonight, but something to do with swelling means it would be better left until the morning. All the treatment he mentioned was painkillers and anti-inflammatories.

I would love to report him, I'm trying to find out who the owner was at the minute. The thing is, he spoke with a Southern accent, which makes me think he's a member of a certain family who are not to be messed with. If it turns out that he is I'd be scared to report him because there would certainly be repercussions. I didn't even notice the dog, didn't know a thing until I heard Jasmine.

I can't work out for the life of me why the feeling in her legs is a bad thing. The vet was so negative. He mentioned putting her to sleep countless times.

How much do I wish one of you lived over here and could go to the vets with me. I'm so not an assertive type of person.

High-dose methylprednisolone (15 to 30 mg/kg), administered 45 minutes after severe contusion injury (400 gm-cm) to cat spinal cords, rapidly reverses the typical posttraumatic ischemia that occurs in spinal injuries. White matter blood flow improves despite the systemic hypotension associated with bolus intravenous injections of such massive corticosteroid doses. In addition, this treatment facilitates extracellular calcium ionic recovery in contused spinal cords, and salvages evoked potential activity that is lost in untreated cats. These data suggest that high-dose corticosteroid treatment causes local vasodilation of spinal cord blood vessels. The consequent blood flow increase may account for the beneficial effects of high-dose corticosteroid treatment on both functional recovery and histopathological appearance of injured spinal cords.

I know for sure we have used corticosteroids many hours after the injury not just within the hour.

Some spinal injuries can takes days to slowly show signs of improvement so please do not give up hope (unless the xrays show some thing very bad and obvious) Her pain can be controlled but please do not let your vet do something to soon.
