The guy at my local corner shop pulls my leg when I buy free-range eggs. He calls them 'cockerel eggs'. I feel sorry for the poor cockerel who laid them, painful!!

I read that thing about raw egg white preventing the absorption of biotin, a B vit, which can lead to various health problems in cats. Cooked whites and any kind of yolk should be fine.

Raw eggs have something in them that breaks down biotin, so shouldnt be fed too often. I reckon once a week would be ok

I read something earlier that said something in the white breaks dwn the biotin and the white isn't very nutricious anyway as it's only amniotic fluid  - I shall remember that when I'm having a fry-up next  :evillaugh:

Can't think what else it could be as we changed her dry food over as soon as she got here and started her on wet food as well and none of that has been changed until I added the egg yolk yesterday evening.

Ok thanks MM!

She had a bit of an upset tummy at lunchtime (not the runs as such but quite squidgy if you know what I mean) so I am guessing that was in reaction to the egg yolk as that's the only new food she's had in the past 3 or 4 days. She's been absolutely fine since and isn't off colour or anything. Next time I might only give her half a yolk as could be a whole one was a bit rich for her little tummy (she's only been eating wet food for the past week).

How often is it safe to give a raw yolk in the wet food? Should it only be given once a week or is 3 times a week ok?

Talking of weird foods cats like Miss Boopy was trying to steal my friends apple crumble the other night and my brie last night (you can tell she's French ) The only human food Bilbo will try to steal is fish and chip shop fish!

Clapton ate some raw yolk even when he was feeling poorly. I think there is probably more goodness in it raw as well. It must be good as it has everything chicks needs to develop. A tiny bit of milk mixed in it might help as well. I also read that egg is the ultimate form of protein, even better than fish or chicken. I read on a site recently where a woman gives her cat a raw food diet. She gives her cat one egg yolk a week for "a glossy coat and bright eyes"

I made her scrambled eggs and she wouldn't touch them. Mixed an egg yolk into a bit of wet food and she has started to eat it then Bilbo wandered over so I had to take it away again but I'll give her the bowl back when she goes to bed in half an hour.

Scrambled eggs is on my vets aftercare sheet for bland things to feed after an op - just watch how you make it. my cats can't have any of my leftover scrambled eggs as I season with celery salt, paprika and chives!! You might want to make it with water rather htan milk in case she is sensitive to milk.

Mosi loves raw egg, as did Magpie.  If I beat up an egg for an omelette of something he loves to lick out the bowl.  I dropped an egg on the floor the other day so scooped up the yolk and beat it up then gave it to Jaffa and Mosi - they loved it.

I thought raw eggs were bad for cats (am sure I read that somewhere), that's why I wanted to check that it was ok once cooked.

Its the uncooked white that isnt supposed to be good for cats, but I add the whole raw egg to their meat mix every now and then with no probs. Scrambled is fine too - my vet recommended that once for a poorly cat.

someone was telling me the other day that raw egg is good for cats and dogs and the crushed shell also  :-:  She said her cats loved the raw egg altho wouldnt eat shell but her great danes happily wolfed down the whole lot

I add crushed eggshell to the minced meat sometimes instead of bonemeal. Its such a good source of calcium and if ground up really fine mine don't notice it. It makes a good phosphorus binder too apparentely.

When the Proot wouldn't eat the vet said to try him on raw egg yolk as they're so high in calories

Aha that will do the trick then (I'm trying to get lots of calories in) Will get some more eggs and see if she'll eat a raw egg yolk mixed int oehr wet food then. Thanks.

We used to feed our family cats a raw yolk as treats too.
