You're so right, Beowulf - they're an absolute gift to be treasured.

Sounds like you're making steady progress with Williw, and she's blossoming under the attention.   :)

When we got our last dog, Tess, from a shelter she had no confidence.  She was a gentle and affectionate soul, but when we first brought her home she was timid and nervous and with no confidence whatsoever.  To see her grow and develop - she had such a lovely nature and would play and do comical things just to make us laugh - she'd peek at you with a really raffish look on her face, and one ear cocked while the other was off at some impossible angle - because she had a mad hairstyle it always gave her endearing appeal.  Miss her so much.

I cant keep my hands off ours - am always telling them that I love them, and having a little pat or stroke (much to their amusement!).

im the same with what ever pet ive had

once had a border collie and a yorkie pup......when yorkie was about 9 months old we lost the collie to the bridge  :(  the yorkie then became very depressed as he had lost his pal (didnt eat for over 8 days, ended up taking him to vets for vitamin shots cos we were so worried) i figured the best way to get him out of his blues was to shower him with love, never walked past his bed without stopping to fuss him and talk to him, even if that meant 10 times an hour, he soon came round, never ceased liking a fuss.....that little dog went onto last almost 16 years

willows problem is shes such a scaredycat, jumps at her own shadow so we trying the same logic, constantly stroking and fussing, calling her name, etc, shes starting to calm down, she was even content to let me pick her up for almost a minute earlier  :wow: target is to be able to cradle her and tickle her belly

pets are wonderful things, not just cats but dogs as well, they do give unconditional love, the very least we can do is take care of them

:( Lovely but so sad and true. It breaks my heart that there are people out there that are so cruel. Just giving Scooby a hug. :Luv2:
until you love a cat you haven't loved.

Oh Lord..... yes, that got me too.   :(

I cant keep my hands off ours - am always telling them that I love them, and having a little pat or stroke (much to their amusement!).  Their happiness and welfare mean everything to us

We would get out of bed at 3 o fluffybanana in the morning in the middle of winter to check outside and make sure Dickie had a safe place to stay when he was shut out of his own home - letting him in meant hoofing it off downstairs, shutting off the alarm, unlocking the door and then doing it all back up again - usually feeding him when he got in and then settling him down on a spare dressing gown for the night.   By that time of course we were normally rudely awake and freezing (ours not being the warmest of houses!) but happy that we knew he was with us.

Cats are the most marvellous of companions, and I feel for every single one of them that ends up unwanted in shelters.

an Australian friend of mine is a supporter of a rescue shelter in Melbourne

i happened to be on the shelters website earlier and found this poem

apologies if its been posted before

thought id share, thing is every time i read it i choke up  :'(

YOU SAY YOU LOVE ME

I am a little kitten snuggled up with my mother,
Along with my sisters and my one little brother.
You come along and you squeal with glee when you see me

... and you say you love me.

You take me home and set me up in your room
And cuddle me close, saying you've saved me from doom.
I was sad and lonely you tell me

... and you say you love me.

I am a happy little kitten who gets love and care
With lots of toys and treats and time in the fresh air.
When you come home from work you hold me

... and you say you love me.

A few weeks pass and my life has changed,
My owner is busy with life and nights out arranged.
I lay in my little bed as you walk past me

... and you don't say you love me.

The fresh air time is no more and the toys are all broken,
My heart has grown sad from words of love never spoken.
My coat has grown dull, but you don't seem to see

...and you don't say you love me.

One day you take me to a place called a shelter,
There are kittens running about all helter and skelter.
You leave me there and don't pause to look back

... and you don't say you love me.

The shelter owner bathes me and kisses my nose,
And says ...

'I've seen this before and God only knows,
You are not the first and you won't be the last
of little kittens that have become part of their owners past.
Here you will know true love, you are safe in my arms,
There are warm beds and treats, life will at last have its charms.
Look at me, little kitten, look into my eyes and see my good heart.'

... and you hold me so close I almost can't breathe

... and you say you love me.
