I took one of my rabbits in for a tooth check as she had been grinding her teeth, and the vet said "how on earth did you notice that?"

I know exactly what you mean - cos I'm always giving Bonnie belly rubs I noticed lump near one of her nipples and it turned out to be a mammary lump and she had it removed and luckily it was not cancerous.  I also once noticed a boil on her bum - i might add for those of you who do not know that Bonnie has no tail and it was easy to see as she is always shoving her bum in my face

 >:( I read a similar thing recently about how "most pet owners" don't know the correct diet for their animals, and a whole host of other things.  Nice and vague.

I might not know for sure how old Bert (our newly adopted stray) is, or our eldest cat Hannah, but I know their favourite foods, I know exactly where they like their chins tickled, they are all neutered, vaccinated, up to date with flea and worm treatment and get very regular health checks.  Not to mention the love they get...  Not knowing the age of a cat is not the be all and end all.

My vets seem quite surprised when we go in and we know our stuff or have noticed things in our animals that need investigating.  I took one of my rabbits in for a tooth check as she had been grinding her teeth, and the vet said "how on earth did you notice that?" I just looked at her and said "I spend time with my pets."  Sad that she was surprised, actually.

Exactly.  I mean, the title suggests we don't even know which end we use for getting the teabag out of the cup!   :innocent:

They could've said "almost a quarter of cat owners" or something less provocative.  I know the mag is aimed at veterinarians and those in the pet food trade, but hey - those outside their particular coterie get to see it too.....   :shify:

C'mon, do your survey on here.  You'll never get it finished even in a twelve months.  We can tell you almost everything about our cats!! Whaddya wanna know??!!

I think that a large percentage of cat owners with rescue cats, me included, only know a guesstimate of the ages as told to them by the vets or rescue.

I so agree Sue with what you say and we are not bad owners

Sort of makes my point Dawn - there's no way you neglect either of yours!   I wonder who they asked and how many cat owners they asked - 10, 20?  100? 1000?

I certainly wouldn't describe any Purrs members as "clueless about their cats"    :-:

Have just read a rather annoying little article in a magazine (Pet Gazette) which carried the heading:  "Cat Owners Clueless about their pets."

It goes on to say that following a survey commissioned as part of Chronic Cat Pain Awareness  Month almost a quarter of all cat owners (24%) are unaware of their cat's age, and 22% don't know whether they have a pedigree or a moggie.

Okay, the aim of the research is to point out that cat owners need to have their cats vet-checked annually at least, especially as they get older, but just because you don't know your cat's age or its family tree (could be a rescue cat!) doesn't necessarily follow that you wont take your cat for regular veterinary check ups.

And if 24% of cat owners dont know their cat's age, it follows that 76% do!

Bit of an annoying headline for what is otherwise a gentle reminder as to responsible pet ownership.
