Canaural can cause redness and swelling, check the leaflet in the box for all the symptoms.
Do their ears look ok?

Lisa, I've had to administer canaural before. It's a bl**dy pain! The best thing to do, is put the drops in then rub the ear together gently, otherwise the cat will immediately shake its head and half if not all the canuaral will come back out.

And it's normal for them to scratch their ears like mad after you've put the drops in, I think it's because they can feel something moving in their ear!

Good luck - I don't envy you! :)

then i questioned it and said " is it a contagious infection " she said no
then i said " it seems strange why they would all have this problem at once "
and my vet said " it might be contagious im not sure " bridie had it worse though my vet said her ear was full of wax and inflammed

Your vet seems quite unsure lol

I don't envy you having to administer ear drops for 7 cats for a week though hahaha

makosis was slightly inflamed and waxy

Maybe next time you could ask what a house call would cost Lisa. If its more than 4 of mine I get a house call as it saves the distress for them all

Get yourself a nice stiff drink and get a massage from the o/h when he gets home and then finally settle with a mass cuddle from all your babies

hope things start to get better for you sweetheart

Ive had the afternoon from hell  >:(
it took ages to round each cat up as after i put the first one in the carrier they all knew something was going on and went to hide  >:( >:( >:( >:(
i arrived at the vets first with bridie pickles and makosi
bridie did her usual poohing in the basket  >:(

basiclaly after the vet looking in all 7 cats ears she reckons its not mites
but its some kind of infection and there was a lot of wax
the vet has prescibed the canaural for all 7 cats
ive only bought 3 bottles so far as i want to try and get it cheaper online

Got home and omg
wat a perormance
they all made a terrible fuss and acted like i was going to kill them rather than put some drops in there ears  >:(
its a nightmare ! >:(
it says on the leaflet that u should try and stop the cat from shaking its head afterwards
ive done my best to hold there heads and massage the ear like it says but ive not had a lot of luck
does it matter if they shake there head ??????
is it right that ive only got to treat them for 5-7days ?

also does it matter that they r itching like mad after ive put it in there ears ??????

 :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( ive had enough of today

Its nice and cheap on vetuk, my vets charged me atleast double and michelle furbaby spent a fortune on it!

Its ear drops, it will soften any wax and kill mites if they have them. It has antibiotics and an anti inflammatory in it.

What i pitty more is having to do drops for mites for 3 weeks, i hate doing ear drops, give me eyes any day!
Fingers crossed it isnt  :luck:

I pitty you if they dispense Canaural for all of them, may be better to ask for a prescription, the mark up on them is high. Scratchy ears isnt life threatening so thats probably what id do.

Dinah was scratching behind her ears a lot, but we think it's an allergy of some sort and the vet agrees.  Can't see how all of your cats would all suddenly become allergic to something though?

Exactly!
imo all the symptons r suggesting ear mites

No it isnt the first time ive used strong hold  ;D
theyve all had it since little kittens and have never had a bad reaction to it ,

mm i also think it would be highly unlikey all 7 would of had hair in there ears too

from what i can see bailey and max have a bit of wax in there ears the other cats ears look quite clean and clear ,

would wax cause itching?
i know it causes me problems with my own ears  ;D

what about an inner ear infection in cats is that something ua cat can catch from another or is it just something one cat in a house hold would have at one time?

im booked in for monday afternoon for the vets with all 7
not at one time may i add lol
im taking 3 first then 2 then the last 2 lol

ive got to do it to put my mind at rest

although between now and monday ill still be worried

but my vet said i had to give it a few days to see if it stopped  :shy:

im pretty sure it cant be earmites given that they have been treated with stronghold ,

The life cycle of the ear mite lasts 3 weeks, thats why with ear drops you have to give them daily for so long. Stronghold will last 4 weeks and cover any that develop  ;D

I would think its funny if 7 cats have all managed to get a hair in their ear!

Last year, clapton had a pink patch after using stronghold. The vet said to put it higher up next time and if there is anu reaction, he will change the brand - but it was OK after that

If the cats are scratching behind the ears and not in the ears, dont think it would be earmites.

However if this scratching started after the use of stronghold for the first time and you put it on back of neck, I wonder if they may have a problem with stronghold? Although I would think its strange for all cats in a house hold to have the same prob...........do you still have the stronghold packaging and was it still withing its use by time?

It will have the batch number on it also, so if there was an universal problem with your cats that maybe stronghold related, then this could be reported by by your vets.

I have never had any probs with it but there could be a rogue batch

i dont think it will be mites forever but a table can be properly cleansed and a rouge mite manage to go awol..they are tiny nearly microscopic things and can move very quickly.

Yes they are very easily spread from cat to cat and there will also be a thick black wax in their ears, its the dirt from the ear mites and they are hard to get rid of.  :shy:

They better of been cleaning the table properly !!!!! >:(

how would ear mites tranfser from one cat to another would they have to get close to them or can they catch it by sleeping in the same places ?

im pretty sure it cant be earmites given that they have been treated with stronghold ,

i was thinking maybe its a build up of wax but then if that was the case why would all of them be scratching ? they wouldnt all have wax would they ? :Dont know: :stupid:

I'm not sure why your vet would have said that forever because  Otodectes cynotis (ear mites) dont lie dormant.

I think you are  right Lynn. They are spread from cat to cat.

Quote
since its so easily transmitted you cats could have picked a mite up when they have been into the vets..but she's unlikely to tell you that

All it would take if for a vet not to cleanse the table properly

How your vet described earmites is the description for herpes which can lie dormant in nerves and flare up (ie coldsores)

do u know if indoor cats can get ear mites?

I suppose if they come into contact with other cats or they have had them a while and it has now become endemic, although if that were the case I would have thought you would see the signs.

Quote
and how do they get them ?

Pass, well I know they are passed from cat to cat.

Quote
i thought stronghold prevented and treated them ?

It should treat them..

It is just that if there are no external parasites I cannot think why the cats would be scratching behind their ears, unless they have some sort of infection and it hurts.

ive just spoken to my vet on the phone and she said that all cats have earmites but they lay dormant and flare up from time to time sometimes if they are stressed that could cause a flare up , she said in her opinion if they have been treated with stronghold that should prevent or kill any ear mites , but of course there could be other reason other than ear mites that causes them to itch behind there ears , apparently a tiny bit of cat hair could of gone in there ear and caused it to itch , my vet said to see how the scratching goes over the next few days if not if im still worried then to bring in just one of them to be examined and if it was something that needed to be treated with drops then id have to bring them all in to get drops for them all .

i didnt know that all cats have ear mites that lay dormant  :Crazy:does anyone else ?

meanwhile oh is sitting here saying " ur paranoid " " i havent seen the cats scratch once "

and im like "thats because ur not with them 24/7 are u hunny "
