I usually do mine at the start of the warm weather then again a few months later, plus any time they're going into the cattery.  I think I'll do them a bit more often now though after Jaffa having fleas last autumn despite not having been outside or to the cattery.  I use Advantage and it is meant to be applied monthly so I think I might use it monthly until the end of the summer then not at all during the winter except for if they go into the cattery at xmas.  I'd rather nip them in the bud than end up with a flea invasion!

Ermmmm this is where I get jumped on but I have to admit I do mine only when they are going somewhere. So the cattery or the vets as they tend to have flea problems is when mine get done. Saying that as I go away 3 or 4 times a year I would guess its at least every 3 months. They are indoor cats and I live in a tower block so they have no outdoor access. I think though they know how itchy I get when I think of fleas and plan a major scratching session to freak me out

see im itchy again now!!!!!!!!!

ME 2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And me

The other day I was watching Mogs and Amber when both of them decided to start scratching their necks. Thats was it I started itching and had to check when they were next due for flea stuff. When I calmed down a bit I realised that if they had fleas I would have been bit to death and I wasnt, also they were both scratching the side of their necks that had been shaved for blood tests so all I can think is that it itches growing out again.
If its any consolation I noticed last year when it was really hot that they scratched a lot more so maybe its the hot weather thats making them scratch

oh yea thats another one "nits"
i had them when i was about 5
my sister had them when she was 16 and at the time she had long blonde spiral permed hair and she was worried about putting the headlice treatment on incase the chemicals of the lotion reacted badly to permed coloured hair !
she had no choice though she had to get rid of them .

its really funny what stays with us and causes us trauma.  all our life experiences stay with us good or bad.  i work as a counsellor and have worked within the field of phobias etc.  but i still worry about flees myself cos they are real.  school must have been a nightmare for you.  in reality anyone with a pet no matter how careful of caring can end up with flees.  horrible little  :censored: yeuk!!!  my children where always clean and i remember them coming home from school with nits      TRAUMA  they are 22 and 24 now and dont live with me now, but if i go and they scratch their head im in it

Know what you mean Lisa. We got an infestation years ago at my old house and it took AGES to sort out. It makes you feel really grubby and the scabs that you end up with because you CAN'T NOT SCRATCH are horrible. I still have a couple of scars from it.

I try really hard to keep that side of things "up to date" now. My guys are combed regularly to check for any little visitors and if there are any I treat them all with herbal drops and the house with herbal spray. (Although, during "flea season" I use Frontline.)

oh honey, thats awful.  my head is stuck in you at school.  im not surprised you have a phobia about them.  in my work sometimes i go into houses that have flees (although i havent lately so am sure i cant have brought anything in) it must have been awful for you.  re your mum: for some people flees are not an issue.  my friend got a kitten from a lady whose children go to the same school as hers the house was infested, my friend was traumatised and de fleed oliver loads but the people she got him off really didnt mind.
a big hug to the traumatised you. x

my phobia goes bk to my child hood and our cat had fleas and my mum took ages to sort it out  :censored: :censored: :censored: :censored: :censored: :censored:
and in the end it was so bad that all day where ever u went in the house about million fleas attacked u and bit u they were everywhere
my sister found them in her barbie dolls hair even !!!!!!!!
and once there was one in my little sisters hair !   it was awful
i hate my mum for putting me through that and not too mention what she put my darling cat through having  :censored:fleas
in the end i saved up my 3 pound a week pocket money and bought some frontline spray it was 12 a bottle then
and my mum paid the council a tenner to fumagate the house and kill the fleas
it was awful
i went to school with a little school skirt on ankle sock and flea bites smothered up my legs
and all i got was """ewwww lisa whats that on ur legs """
now u can all see why i have a proper phobia of them  :(
i even have nightmares about fleas !
and thats why i buy my mums animals there flea treatments
im not saying she wouldnt bother as such but she wouldnt do it on time imo
and as i go there a lot i have to protect my self and my animals
my oh goes mental at me for buying it for my mum and says its up to her to buy it but he doesnt understand if i didnt buy it id just worry myself to death over it
and at the end of the day no animal deserves to have fleas and no human being deserves to be bite by them for weeks on end  :(

Hmmm....sorry, I'm not sure what it could be then. It is possible they've developed an allergy of some kind as suggested, though.

It could be allergies or mites, but the most common cause of scabbing on the neck and near the base of the tail area is fleas. (Makes me itch too!)

It isn't just cats that can carry them. Have you been to anyones house recently with a cat? You can transport them from their house to yours on clothing.  >:(

When I took Shadow to the vets for her jabs, I pointed out some scabs on her neck and the vet said they may be mites  :innocent:  I asked if a stronger flea treatment would work and I was told it would be worth trying it, previously she was on Pets at Home own brand, now I have paid a lot more money for Frontline the scabs are slowly going, maybe you need to change your flea treatment, it could be Frontline is irritating her, my previous cat was allergic to it and I couldn't use it on her.
