They are the ones I have added to watch, will be ordering them on Friday (payday) along with some new cat toys from the purrs shop (assuming the tax man doesn't take all my money again, when I haven't even earnt over the tax threshold this year, but thats beside the point...)

I think I will get do not feed engraved and my mobile number on the tages, as Benji can't eat most cat foods without it rushing out the other end

and Fred and Ginger obviously need to stick to their renal food because of their kidneys. I like the collars with do not feed on them, but because of the material, it won't last on the kittens (I say kittens, their nearly 2

) as they just shred through the nylon with their claws and make it really fluffy and then warp the collar, so its stretched on one side, but not the other? weird.

I agree collars aren't always the best option, but I just want to make sure people are aware they are owned. Benji looks a little, ahem, worse for wear due to his history as a street cat and with his funny walk due to an old RTA it is possible to think he isn't owned. Fred and Ginger look too young to be let out, but they are older than they look, so I want any cat people concerned about them to be aware there is a caring owner, or at least to be able to contact me if they have any worries, if that makes sense? If they show no sign of escaping and everyone is vigilant about keeping them indoors then the collars can come off, but we are moving in with my fiance's family who have never had cats....ever, let alone indoor ones, so I think it will be a learning curve.

It's a difficult one as there are pros and cons and each slave has to decide what is best for their cats. Obviously identification can be useful for injured or sadly RIP cats. Our Aslan was involved in an RTA on our very quiet road one Friday at around 8.30am. Neighbours sort of half saw it happen as he ran off after being hit into a back garden. I didn't find out until next day by which time another neighbour had put his body in the refuse and he had been taken away. He didn't have a collar but was chipped of course. Didn't occur to my non pet owning neighbour that he may have been chipped.

We eventually let all our cats have 24hr indoor/outdoor access which I know many people frown upon (and for good reason) but Dinah, and now Groucho, insist. Consequently the reflective break away collars give some comfort esp for our black cats. I do however agree that there is simply no such thing as a completely "safe" collar. No idea how, but Millie's reflective kittycollar snapped or was somehow cut, nowhere near the clasp, the other week. Not a mark on her

but obviously cause for concern.

We've certainly had a number of "whether or not to collar" debates over the years on Purrs. Some, happily, less heated than others

I would however restate the obvious for any newbies, under no circumstances should peeps use either buckle or so called elasticated "safety" collars as they are just plain dangerous

Sorry, but I disagree with collars unless for specific instances i.e. where a cat has no chip at all. I think that a lost cat wearing a collar is LESS likely to be picked up and rescued, as folk assume he's owned and therefore OK, so the collar becomes counter-productive.

I only collar my animals when they are very new to me and I either haven't chipped them yet, on a special diet (when I use the Do Not Feed message collars), or haven't formally adopted them (my fosters).

Pursley wore a collar for years and now has a completely bald band around her neck, and Cora got her leg caught in her "safety" collar which cut her badly.

I appreciate that Jen has an argument for collaring as this is a big move, and I would likely do the same thing until I got my confirmation that the chips had been re-registered, but I'd get the collars off them once they had got used to the area.

I agree with collars for identification and knowing a cat is owned. I use the safety collars but even still i came home one day to Tazi with his front Paw through it and hobbling about it. It was a defective collar where the "plastic square thingy" for adjusting the size was very loose and if it hadnt had been for that there would have been enough tension on the collar to release the safety latch

I ditched the getting the name tags over a decade ago as they lost that many collars it was getting rediculous!!!

I never thought about people knowing they are cared for aspect and thats why, especially as Nuggie & Tazi got older i never rushed out to replace them - Nuggie doesnt go further than the Cul-de-sac (and this is normally after dark) and everyone here knows him. Peanut....who knows what he does (wish i could get him camera'd

) but I like the reflecty collar as he is also a night cat.
Tazi was well known here and 80% white...he was more of day cat especially in the summer (bit of a sun god

) so he always got Red collars. He was wanderer but in his old age he stayed closer to home. When he went and i put leaflets out, i was suprised how many friends he had..... traitor!

No, you are quite right about concerns about the sizing for Fred and Ginger, I am just pleased that they can fit in adult collars, nowhere does kitten ones that aren't scratch proof, are safety and reflective and so on, they just have to be cute, and I think Fred and Ginger are cute enough without a cute collar too

(as well as them destroying them in about a week, naughty lil minxes, have already warned my fiances mum that her very long curtains will be a favourite, but have been told its all right as they want to re-decorate and it will give her an excuse

I too just want people to know that they are owned, as we will be going to a new area, and I am a bit of a worrier.
Thank you for that link, have added them to watch on e-bay so will get some of those instead on pay day, will be able to order a couple of spares then too, don't know why I hadn't thought of e-bay, I am looking on there for a cheap watch for me, but it didn't occur to me to look for cat collars?

I agree that some people (non pet owners in particular) can assume a collarless cat is a stray no matter how well groomed and well fed they look

Hope I didn't give wrong impression. Didn't mean to imply anything other than the need to be extra careful to get sizing correct for smaller cats like Fred and Ginger.

I try and weigh up the pros and cons of collars for each cat. 4 out of 8 of ours have collars. I am particularly sad that me Grouchie lad and Billy Whiz haven't got them as they are black like Peanut. We were told Billy was not to have a collar when he came to us from Cramar Cat Rescue. I imagine there is a story there that I don't want to know about. Grouchie boy made it purrfectly clear he didn't want one thank you

Our lot wear collars for the pure and simple reason it easily identifies them as living somewhere. This is because their collars are replaced as soon as they look tatty so people can see they're cared for.

In this area there are a fair few cats wander round and you're unsure if they're strays or not. Sad situation but how it is.

Also - when Peanut was chipped, we got a free disc in the pack and all it says is "I'm Microchipped, please scan me" - just a thought rather than numbers - although some collar places you can get your number straight onto the collar...

Peanut is sporting one like JS has suggested (ruins photos though as its just shows as a shiny white strip lol) BUT although I've lived here a while, I wanted the rest of the neighbourhood to know that he is new but owned by someone

Plus being Black it helps in the case of cars coming in the cul-de-sac

As a safety collar, once it gets lost then I dont think a replacement is as important as he is getting known here, but I agree in them for easy identification. Peanuts has yet to fray and is quite sturdy....so far

They are all microchipped, I just want to be doubly sure that people know they are owned.
The kitten collars on Fred and Ginger are on the maximum size now (or they were before taking them off) and Benji's adult one does fit Fred and Ginger, but on the smallest size, if that makes sense, it fits Fred better then Ginger as she is staying at about 2.5kg, and he has gone up to nearly 3kg, so is a little bigger.
Will get a little engraved tag with my mobile number on it to go on the collars, none of them are going to be let out intentionally, but until I am sure how they settle in and how easy it is to keep them indoors I just want to be careful. Annoyingly, Benji would be the most comfortable outside due to his street smarts but is the one who can't go outside and Fred and Ginger can (medically) go outside, but just don't have the confidence or the smarts.

Yer the bald patch is normal - not really bald it's just wear the collar has been lifting the fur up, a bit like our hair having a parting.

Suggest you are very careful about size with these and any other collars Jen if Fred and Ginger are quite small.

Marla @ kittycollars felt our Boris was too small for her collars. All of her adjustable collars are same size. I'm pretty sure I'm right saying that any reference to kitten size on her site is simply to help her with positioning print on printed collars which doesn't in any case apply to her reflective collars.

I had problems with collars on Boris. And yes I think bald patches under collars are quite common. Certainly I have had this with Bobby's reflective collar but have removed it now due to a sore that developed on back of his neck; don't think sore was collar related though.

Are Fred and Ginger micro chipped Jen?

I'll be watching this, I Like the Reflective collars, Stretchy Rob has a Safety one but it isn't reflective and is turning fluffy too

With the move planned, I am putting collars onto the cats, just in case they get out at the new place as it will be a busier house and not everyone will be as vigilant as me at keeping them in, but I can't find any decent cat collars? I bought some ages ago for them, but they never wore them.
Fred and Gingers were kitten ones (as they are quite small) but within a week of wearing them they have scratched them to bits and made them all fluffy, Fred in particular has warped his and it has gone a funny shape. The only one that is any good is Benji's, which is like a faux suede thing, but does not have a reflective strip on it!
where would you recommend a good quality safety collar, not made of the nylon kind of material, but a scratch resistant one that has a reflective strip? or am I asking for too much?
and is it normal for them to get a bald patch under the collar?
