The vets confirmed my findings, or rather lack of them - no chip found. :(

I found a black mature (probably male) domestic short haired cat this morning at around 10.45 am.  He was on the A45 close to the new Costco store on the opposite side of the road, just down from the speed camera. :(

Unfortunately, he had sustained a nasty head injury which caused him his death.  Luckily I had my scanner on board, so stopped the car and grabbed it for a quick check.  In an attempt to not end up as he did, I quickly checked, and didn't find one.  But took him to a nearby vets called Your Vets to have him checked properly and owners informed, or taken care of away from the main road.  The accident probably happened a few hours earlier.   :(
