I thought I would be fine, but this has really hit me that both my babies have it

. No doubt they will soon put a smile on my face running around like loonies!
She is booked in for Friday for all the tests she needs to confirm her levels and exactly how her kidneys are functioning.
She hasn't had blood tests yet, but considering what the vet said about what she could feel of her kidneys, the dilute urine and cystitis and her brother Fred and his diagnosis I think the only question is just how bad her kidneys are.
I think she is at least covered by her insurance, Fred was diagnosed in the first 2 weeks of the policy but she has been insured all this time with no symptoms.
I think they were both just jealous of Benji, as he has FIV and they wanted letters after their names to make them sound smart too

sounds like I have some smart kitties eh? (we did put F.F.T.T. after Gingers name so she wouldn't feel left out, fatty fatty tum tum, hehe, she has a little belly.
I know she likes the renal food though as she likes to try and steal Freds, lol. so there is that.
think I just need to let it sink in, in the mean time I am going to be very mean and wake up 2 sleepy sleepy kitties with their favourite toy in the world! laser/fish toy chasing!!!

Can I ask if you've already had blood tests done as I understand blood tests are more reliable.

So very sad

Think you just have to hang on to the fact that, given their condition, it is at least good that they have someone who will give them the loving care they need

still no news, have phoned them but the lady who is dealing with Ginger is not in until 11, so will have to wait to hear from them
I thought they needed it fresh too, certainly they said Fred's urine which was 1 hour old was too old for some tests? but the vet who saw Ginger said it would be fine to refrigerate. Fingers crossed it is fine.
Well, with Fred his urine is very dilute because his kidney is struggling. Concentrated urine clears the bladder of bacteria, so where his is so dilute the bacteria builds up and he gets cystitis and as that was the first indicator he had kidney problems we are checking to see if hers is dilute also. It has taken so long though I wish I had just got the blood test done and I would have known sooner

Do you know what is meant exactly by "check the dilution of her urine?" Our vets were keen that our Fred's urine be tested as fresh as possible. Preferably within an hour. You might want to ask when discussing the results. It may be that certain tests are fine for samples kept overnight and some tests need to be fresher. I don't know. All I know is that, months ago, when I managed to get a very fresh sample to vet (within 20 mins still warm!), they said our Fred's protein levels were off the scale

I so hope this is not CRF related for Ginger and send many

my vet used to say the sample had to be "spun down" assume that is not as quick as just taking a quick look lol, hopefully it will all be fine

Urine sample is at the vets!
Never known getting some wee to be such a palavar! I got a sample, but it had a small amount of litter in it, so phoned vets to be told 'get another one' by this time Ginger was on to it so when I followed her round one morning to try and get a sample, she got all stressed and the cystitis symptoms came back! Let her be for a couple of hours and they went away.
In the end had to isolate her in a room on her own with the plastic litter and she obliged with a large sample yesterday afternoon/evening time. It was promptly refrigerated and delivered to the vets this morning!
Waiting for a phone call on the results, was hoping to have heard by now as I have to go to work soon, how long does it take to look at wee wee? Just want to know whether she has kidney problems and what to do about her cystitis, as whenever we miss a dose of cystease it comes back, the poor lil lady!
just allowed them out in the lovely sunshine for some supervised outside access and took some pictures, although to be honest I could leave the back door open and still have all three in the house with me (we have tried it before) as they won't go outside unless me or my fiance is out there...
anyway, I am keeping fingers crossed!

Still haven't been able to get a sample, partly my fault, partly Gingers, lol. been in and out for the weekend and today so missed her going to the toilet and Ginger, who used to go for a wee when I went to the toilet, has now decided to go for a poo instead

so have missed the chance to get a sample, (have to follow her round with a little pot to pop under her bottom as the plastic litter that is normally recommended is apparently a really fun toy!)
Didnt mean my last post to be so abrupt but have got a dodgy wrist and Ginger was sitting on my remaining good arm...of course doctors are booked up for the next week and a half but thats another story.
will update when I get a sample and hear anything about the results. If she does have it, I do feel a bit more prepared for it than I did with Fred's diagnosis which sent me into a complete tizz

and I feel I can deal with it, even though it would make me sad for them.

Just had to rescue Fred from a GIANT bee he was trying to eat, although he doesn't see it that way by the expression on his face, lol.
They like to keep you on your toes don't they? Doesn't Fred realise he is supposed to be poorly

After I lost Suzie to PKD, I then adopted Jasper (as an adult cat) - I could see straight away he was drinking loads and had that sinking feeling, especially as he came from the same parents as Suzie, and he too was diagnosed with PKD

If the urine is dilute then she will have all the tests Fred has had done, bloods, urine and ultrasound, and then obviously renal food and medication if needed. Just waiting for the urine tests is the main thing before we go any further. Part of me is convinced she has it, especially after the vet had a really good feel of her kidneys and said the right one is smaller than the other, Freds dodgy one is small and shriveled and not working at all.
Freds insurance does not cover his condition as it was first diagnosed during the first 2 weeks of the insurance being taken out, but if it is CRF then these are Ginger's first symptoms so I am kind of hoping they will cover it and I will just be paying out for Freds CRF.
I realise it is not a death sentence, but just a bit sad that both my poor little kittens may have it. I want to stamp my feet and say that life is not fair.

Do not despair as Napoleon had only one working kidney for at least 3 years, maybe a very long time as he was 15/16 when discovered by accident.

His levels were at that time a mini fraction over normal but that could have just been his age.

What did the damage was the crystals, non-struvite that were around this kidney cos they broke up and blocked him this year. The advice when discovered was due to his age to leave them

I hope that the levels are OK but an xray or scan maybe an idea to see if any crystals are lurking.............do you have insurance cos the vet bills go up and up?

Just a little winge...
Ginger has got cystitis today and her brother, Fred had cystitis and it turned out it was because he has one kidney smaller than the other and long story short he has now been diagnosed with CRF.
The vet said one of Gingers kidneys feels much smaller than the other

its like it was with her brother

got to get a urine sample to the vets soon and they will check the dilution of her urine as that was the indicator of Freds kidney problems
Poor Ginger

I don't want them both to have it

Have been giving them all extra hugs
