thanks for the  s they are much needed.
They know Benji is FIV and they also know he had his dental this week so are aware of his vulnerable state. I always make sure my hands are washed and clean and am being extra careful at the cattery as there are quite a few new kittens and pregnant mums in and when I come home I change my clothes, and I only wear the same clothes to the cattery every week, the only thing I can think of is my shoes?
It was also purely coincidental that I popped into the cattery to pick some keys up from a friend and went and spoke to one of the women there, otherwise I still wouldn't know what had caused all this.
It breaks my heart to see my normally naughty, energetic babies just lying there looking so poorly.
Someone was sick last night but I think it was Benji, not the kittens.
They licked the jelly off the sensitivity food but left the rest, Benji will eat some Applaws I bought for him and Fred and Ginger would rather have their normal food, so I am giving them that instead as I want them to get eating. Normally they would wolf down their food like theres no tomorrow, but they just pick really slowly  :( I want my normal, healthy kittens back  :'(

added to the lecture I got from the stooooopid vet about mixing FIV and non FIV, I just firmly said no and spouted loads of research at him...I am not putting up with being lectured to like I am risking my cats, I know Benji and he is not a fighter and the state the kittens were in when I got them, surely an indoor home where they are much loved and pampered with Benji is better then no home? anyway....

I am leaning towards not going back...I would like to help but I never want to see them this poorly again, especially being told they have 2 days to improve before being hospitalised....
anyway, I better get to work.

thanks everyone!

I think with Benji having FIV you need to be extra careful at the RSPCA.  Are they aware of this?

I do home visits for the RSPCA and also stroke all the cats when I have time.  There is a notice up telling everyone to wash their hands after touching each cat so there is nothing carried from one to another.  Also on each pen there is a history of each animal and I always read it before going in the pen to stroke the cat.

When I went last week there were a lot of them that were ill and a FIV cat.

Hope everyone is well soon and you can decide what you are going to do in the future that will be best for your cats and the rescue ones.

we have all been to the vets, Benji has metacam for his teeth, Ginger and Fred have antibiotics and pro-kolin and if they are not improved by monday then they are to be hospitalised.
Have given them a tiny bit of sensitivity food and fingers crossed they keep it down.
I realise it is probably not the catteries fault but it has made me question if I am being selfish by volunteering there and putting my lot at risk, think maybe a round robin style e-mail warning volunteers would have been much appreciated and I would have got them to the vets as soon as they were sick rather than thinking it must have been something they ate and starving them and stuff...
fingers crossed for the weekend.  :(

Poor babies :care:

I can see why you're upset at the rescue but I think it's more than likely a case of it just not occuring to them rather than anything else. I'd imagine they're as busy as ever so maybe you could ring a day or so before you intend to go and just check if they've had any outbreaks you should be aware of.

Hope the gorgeous trio are better soon, I know how worrying it is

you are right, now I have a calm head on, lol, the main thing that got to me was that I have been panicking and worrying the last few days when if I had known, they all would have been straight to the vets and this would have been sorted.
added to the constant vomit I am clearing up and massive amounts of uni work...
I will see if they could e-mail me in future and maybe take a couple of weeks off until I know both theirs and my cats are ok. To be honest, Benji is such a robust cat and I think it has helped that he is already on antibiotics for his teeth. It is more the kittens I am worried about as Ginger seems to be going downhill and now can't even keep water down  :( I have taken up their water and now am syringing them with small amounts regularly to keep them hydrated as otherwise it comes straight back up
Thanks
Jen

I can understand why you are upset, they should have let you know because of the risk to your cats. However, you volunteer because you care about the cats at the rescue and it isn't their fault. Personally, I would continue to volunteer but aske them to ensure in future you are kept informed about anything contageous going around in the cattery.  Hope your lot recover soon. I have FIVs too and understand how we can be that little bit more paranoid about them.

I am in a bit of a tizz over this, but was hoping for some opinions...
Fred, Ginger and Benji it seems have come down with a stomach bug/virus. Benji is FIV+ and had a dental on Tuesday so is not at his strongest anyway. Fred and Ginger came down with stomach problems first, while Benji was at the vet on Tuesday for his op, and obviously since coming home, Benji has it too. I initially thought it was just that they had eaten something they shouldn't have, as with the kittens that is what they do, but they have been unable to keep any food down since Tuesday, so it is obviously something more...
Coincidentally I popped into the RSPCA cattery where I volunteer today and guess what? the cats there have come down with a stomach bug/virus. I was not told about this when I went there on Monday and seeing as all mine are indoors only and the symptoms are exactly the same it is highly likely I brought it home with me. I am taking all of my lot to the vets later on for some antibiotics and whatnot but have been tearing my hair out trying to figure out what is wrong with them all, thinking it must be something they ate, as they don't go out so where would they pick up a tummy bug from? as I had not been told about there being a bug at the cattery, I didn't think of it coming from there...
Now I am left with some very poorly cats, I am feeling very guilty as I brought it home and am very annoyed with the cattery for not even sending out an e-mail to their volunteers letting them know, as well as more vets bills which, due to financial circumstances being well...down the toilet at the moment, I could really do without...
I am wondering if I should even go back to the cattery to volunteer? I consider Benji to be vulnerable to this sort of thing so would have appreciated a simple e-mail (they have all volunteers contact details/e-mails) so it would have been my decision to go in on Monday, and given the kittens history of illness, I consider them vulnerable too...
Would you go back to volunteering? or would you not return? If I do return I will feel I am risking the cats, but if I don't, then I will feel guilty about quitting.....
sorry this has turned into a bit of a rambling post, has been a long few days  :(
