I think I might try doing what Alex S does and splitting the dry over two snacks. I weighed Riley after I posted and he is 6.5kg and very lean so think they will need more food than Sadie (due to them being male and Sadie being a petite female) so will probably try 2 x 100g wet meals with 2 x 15g dry snacks. If they still leave the wet then I'll probably cut the wet down too.

I have no experience otherwise but so far this is working really well for us and her. She was only interested in wet food for the first month or so but will happily eat both now. She is really fussy though, sainsbury's perfectly meaty and chicken hi-life are tolerated for a week or so before she turns her nose up but she wolfs the fish versions of both. Encore, however is a different story, she LOVES the chicken one. If money were no object i'd prefer to cut out the biscuits and substitute it for high quality food but alas, the wallet won't like that! Splitting the meals definitely stops her from crying for food, though... except the morning of course, she's like an alarm clock.

Mine have half a pouch in the morning with biscuits left down then another half a pouch in the evening with more biscuits, if i have cooked a chicken they'll have some of that too. They were having a pouch each in the morning and in the evening but as Casper and Teddy are very round at the moment i've put them all on diets apart from the baby  :briggin:

Jess and Milo get a pouch each in the morning and evening (I think this is 100g per pouch - Felix), however we feed half a pouch between them each time so they get 4 feeds but 2 pouches.

They both get 5g of biscuits on the second helping of both feeds, so 10g each a day (Royal Canin steralised)

Jess also has water added to his wet food.

I often wonder if this is not enough, as they both always seem hungry, but they are both chunky too.

Jaffa has 3 meals a day of wet - 85-100g per meal (one pouch/small tin each meal) and no dry but a few treats morning and night (usually 4 dreamies or equivilent each time).  Mosi has half a pouch 3 times a day (so approx 50g) with some dry sprinkled on top - about 10 pieces - no idea what that would be in weight.  Plus treats the same as Jaffa.

Aren't the bozita cartons a bit smaller than 400g?  I thought they were something like 380g?  I'd guess that they are maybe getting a little more wet now than before and are probably also eating more dry if they are having 25g first thing rather than just snacking on it throughout the day like they were before.  I also think some foods are more filling than others.  Sometimes Jaffa licks his dish clean then other times he eats about 3/4 and walks away (although he's usually back to finish it before long!)

Poot has 3 pouches of wet a day, but one of those is Gourmet Pearl which is quite small in comparison to the others  :)

I have no idea as I free-feed. Lazarus is given about 5 or 6 pouches a day with water added. He rarely eats mre than 1/2 the food but drinks all the juice. He has eaten about 1.5kg of dry in about 18 days as well.

Alice eats about 2 pouches a day + a small amount of dry and some tinned salmon or chicken.

Klie eats about 1 pouch a day + fish + maybe 25g of dry despite her size.

:thanks: everyone, looks like I might be expecting them to eat too much now the dry has been factored back in then? Just seems odd that Riley for example could easily polish off 4 x 100g of RC pouches a few weeks ago but now he is struggling to eat 2 x 100g pouches now that they're having 25g of dry.

I think that is does depend on the season and temperature of your house to an extent. If you have had your heating on a lot and the cats have been staying in then they maybe need less food as they do not need so much energy to keep warm.
I tend to only give half a pouch and put the rest in the fridge. If you clip the pouch shut with a clothes peg it should stay fresh. Take it out a bit before feeding to come to room temp.
We have kittens which are not really comparable to your adults.

I do keep my house pretty warm and have been known to leave the heating on when I go to work so the boys don't get cold  :-[ They are probably 95% indoor cats during the winter and only go out every few days for half an hour or so.

So when do you feed them the wet meals? if you give them the dry first thing, when does the next wet meal get served?  :) Sounds like they are getting full up on the dry, and perhaps they werent eating as much as 25g of dry before?

Good point Gillian... It does depend (as I work shifts) - If I'm on an early I would feed them myself at around 6am (100g wet) and they do tend to eat most of this. I'd then give them some biccies (25g) at 4pm ish which they wolf down. They then pester for dinner, normally 7pm ish, which is when they tend to leave at least half.

If I'm on a late shift I would let the auto-feeder feed them 25g of biccies each at 6am ish, I then feed them at around 9/10/11am due to pestering (100g wet) and again this is when they might only eat half.

I think I might try doing what Alex S does and splitting the dry over two snacks. Sadie has 1 pouch of hi-life or sainsburys perfectly fishy and about 30g of dry per day. Half of her wet at about 7am, then half of her dry at about 9.30am followed by the other half of wet at about 7pm and the rest of her dry at 11pm before i got to bed. She's an indoor cat and often doesn't finish all her wet food.

4 cartons of Bozita plus two small bowls of origen between 7.       Sometimes one of the cartons gets changed for a tin of grau or some raw

Have no idea really but he has a regular-ish routine (prob 200+g?)  :-: Morning between Pep (and 2 ferals) 1 tin with a bit left over then give Pep a bit more about an hour after (he likes all the jelly).  Midmorning a pate or a pouch.  Afternoon some of a tin and teatime usually some treat (often what we we have, chicken, beef, etc) then supper more from a tin but he nibbles as and when he wants really on and off all day as do the ferals though some prefer wet/others dry.  If he wants food and his dish is empty he sits like oliver by his dish until he gets some (but is deaf/blind).  He doesn't eat dry though there's always some out for him (give it to the ferals) unless he goes outside then will sometimes eat some of the feral's dry.  He weighed about 3.2kg last weeks weigh-in but has hyperthyroidism.

1 pouch/quarter of a tin of Animonda/quarter of a carton of Bozita for dinner and half a ramekin (slightly less for the girls) of dry. Plus they usually get treats every day too but only 6 or 7 Temptations each or equivalent.

Chilli will always leave some wet which the other two will always finish for her. I have no idea where Little Miss puts her food but I saw her eat two dinners one evening as Dave turned his nose up! If you're not fast your last in this house.

If I were to add another wet meal to this as it seems you have this extra over me (bearing in mind I have one 6.45kg boy, one 3ish kg girl and an even tinier girl) then I think I would have wastage or overweight cats. Dave has a bit of a tum on him but nothing major, vet has certainly never mentioned him needing to lose anything.

How much do your cats eat (wet & dry)?
« Reply #1 on: January 26, 2011, 19:24:51 PM »
I'm having a few issues with food lately. For the first three years of their lives the boys have had 1/4 carton (near enough 100g so same size as a pouch) of Bozita for breakfast each, the same for dinner and a bowl of dry down 24/7. I never really measured how much dry they were eating but not loads as the bowl was rarely emptied, I just kept topping it up.

Fast forwards to Riley's tummy troubles and I changed that to: 3 or 4 (100g) pouches of RC sensitivity for Riley. 3 x 100g portions of Bozita for Lu - no biscuits. They've always licked their bowls clean, both recently since they've been on wet only and for the last three years when they were eating wet for breakfast and dinner with a bowl of dry down 24/7.

I've now managed to wean them onto JWB (hypoallergenic) biscuits so give them 25g of biscuits each first thing, 2 x 100g pouches of RC sensitivity for Riley and 2 x 100g portions of Bozita for Lu, in two separate meals so 100g in each sitting. To me this seems roughly the same amount as before but for some reason they now can't eat a whole portion of wet in one sitting. This causes problems as Riley is supposedly intolerant to other meats so I have to chuck whats left as it doesn't keep well. They have also started pestering for food relentlessly when I'm at home, previously they might start getting a bit moany at around dinner time but wouldn't pester me other than that.

I can't see that I'm feeding them too much so can't figure out why they're not finishing each bowl now whereas they were before. Riley weighs as least 6kg but is very lean, Lu probably weighs 5ish and although not as lean as Riley is not overweight.

Does what I'm feeding sound right? By comparison how much wet & dry do other people's cats eat?
