Yes I think its like that one except open with all wires showing!!

Dont know when it was done cos my porch is now encloed with double glazing but used to be open, could have been the people before me .........most likely , or before them.

They didnt have internet but he was in police so an extension lead is into front room and also into bedroom but socket has been triple wired, not the way to do it at all!

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh I wish you were close to me , you would be so welcome  ;D

Thanks Merv cos thats exactly what I think I have and then there is another mutilated black socket in the indoor porch all this goes back to previous owners and two extension lines have been wired into the white socket in house.

Think this is why I get such bad speeds on internet but BT hinted that they would charge £150 plus to come out and look!

Cant afford that.....sigh

Is the black box in the hall round or shaped like in the photo (although this one has been painted)

If so then that is part of BT's network.
You see BT Openreach do all the work for BT & Openreach bill BT for the work,BT then try to pass this charge onto the customer.
Here is how you get around it.You do not have a modern NTE-5 Master socket in the house so therefore you cannot test the network nor disconnect any extensions as to do so is illigal under the Telecommunications Act.
Therefore you require an engineer to replace the junction box in the hall (BT Responsibility & to fit a new NTE5.When/if they do try to charge you,you quote this:
Quote
Do I have to pay for a fault repair?

We can repair many line faults at the exchange or on the network. Others require a visit by a BT engineer. There is no charge for these repairs. We will only charge you when one of our engineers visits your property and finds that the fault could have been fixed by you. For example, if your phone is broken or has been left unplugged.

Which is from BT's site here;

https://www2.bt.com/static/i/microsite/help_and_tips/faults/faq/faults_faq2.html

Which I posted here;

http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.php?t=2855286

Pity you did'nt live near me or I'd pop round & look at it for you.

Thanks Merv that picture is very useful and if I get any other problems I will contact you  :thanks:

I will open up the socket later cos I dont think I have a socket like that!

Hi Gill,

If you open up the socket & you see this;

You have an LJU 2/1A & don't have a test socket.So if you ring BT,Make sure you explain that to them.

Aw, Gill!  :-[ :hug: :hug: :hug:

Back in the days of trim-phones when you rented the phone as well as the line, I had a row with BT that lasted for DAYS.  :scared: Every half hour or so the blasted phone would go 'blip' as if trying to ring but getting cut off. We called all our friends and no one claimed to be trying to call us and getting cut off.  :-: We spoke to no end of BT fault finding people and they all kept telling me my phone was fine. I told them the phone wasn't fine and they needed to change my handset.  :shocked:

I decided to give it one last go with the fault finders before reporting them to Ofcom and I had steam coming out of my ears by this stage. Then I got this engineer type person who said to me "have you got a smoke alarm?".  :-[ :-[ :-[ You guessed it... the battery was dying and the 'blip' was a warning to change it. Wanted the earth to swollow me up....  :doh:

No was still as dead as a dodo. takes me agesw to get the internet signal coming through again......sigh but thats normal!

Gill,your broadband will still work when the phone doesn't because it splits off in the BT Exchange,What you need to do is locate your main BT phone point.)see pic-

Remove the bottom half & plug a different phone into the small socket on the right;

If you still have no dial tone then the fault is outside your home somewhere on BT's side.This is BT's responsibility & not chargeable HOWEVER they will try to charge you for any engineer visit.

If you need anymore advice,PM me as I'm a cable satalite & phone engineer.

might have guessed the particular problems in Gill's area were caused by Sasa :rofl:

Ahem and very ashamed  :scared:  :-[

Followed instructions of Sues person and went to get my extension from study, hasnt been used since I got lappy but Sasa has been sleeping on the pc chair next to radiator for last two bitter cold nights.

Immediately saw the bloomin problem, she had rolled the chair getting on and off and it had knocked the receiver off the hook..................problem now solved!!!!!!!!!!!!  :-[ :-[ :-[

Thank you to every one who helped and so sorry for wasting your time  :-[

But at least I have now got a topped up mobile!

Still waiting for vet to ring and will be dark ib another half hour and so didnt want to have to travel to Gower in rush hour in the dark on freezing roads to get new meds for Franta but reckon thats what I am going to do now!!!!!!!!!

Have rung them and vet still in a meeting but not the vet I saw on Sat who has day off cos of working at weekend.

hi fellow helpers

when I entered Gill's phone number to report a fault I got a recorded message saying owing to unusual number of calls etc etc and to use the web

so if no-one else got that message it suggests there are particular problems in Gill's area

Gill - am trying for you too.  BT have just taken me though a whole load of questions and answers - say they've tested "my line" and it's fine!!!!   I pressed the selection which said I was calling from another phone, on behalf of a third party, so what's the use of testing my line?   :doh:

Gill, do you have a cable splitter for your broadband?  I had problems with mine - phone wouldn't work,  but broadband did.  had to get a new cable splitter for about £3.50 from Argos but it's worth checking.

I am gonna have another try for you on BT.n :hug:

No probs Gill.    :hug:

Am not on 02 now, but I know I could top up either using a voucher (bought at local post office/newsagent - was like a scratch card, you scraped off the foi lto reveal a number underneath and then keyed that into your phone) or by using a debit/credit card, although I had to register my card with them first.   I think also I had a "hot key" - think it was the number 2 key, which if you pressed and held would tell you how much credit you had available.  The phone I have now, you cand ial 150 and get through to the top up centre.

Am trying to find out for you online if 02 have a top up number you can call.

Ah - Ann beat me to it!  ;D
