Unless you see him having another seizure, lay off any epilepsy meds for now. They have really nasty side effects. (Believe me, I know, as I have to take them myself!)

Meeko may be anaemic, or have something else which is making him sleepy. Seizure meds would make him sleep 24/7!

Vet said its very unlikely that he's anaemic (I asked bout it) but if he hasnt improved within the week then the bloods will answer that for us. If it is epilepsy then i dont think he needs the meds to be honest as it doesnt really effect things majorly.

Thanks for the advice :) x

Hello,

The vet examined meeko really thoroughly and could not find anything wrong with him. He has given me another dose of worming treatment as he thinks it could be down to worms. He said to come back in a weeks time if there is no improvement and he will take some blood samples and see what he can see there.

As far as epilepsy he said it does sounds like he could have it and thinks it could be due to head trauma when he lost his tooth a while ago as we never figured out how it had happened. He said if Meeko is happy (other than current illness) then its best just to keep an eye on him.

I will keep you infomed, he's had the wormer now so ill keep you gyus imformed! I've also prescribed him lots of cuddles and tlc!  :Luv:

Aww I hope it goes well and that Meeko is feeling better soon.
Ive only just caught up with this post but a friend of mine has a cat that does the stary and floppy seizures as well. Her vet said it was epilepsy and he is on tablets for it I cant remember the name but its a tranq I think. They did say that the next thing would be a brain scan but as hes well in himself and the only place that does the scan is hours away they wouldnt recomend it unless things get worse.

Once he had gathered where he was he went and had something to eat and then went to sleep - He was fine the next morning and back to his normal self. He could have had a period of sniffness before my partner picked him up but there were no convulsions that we noticed so hopefully its just a one off thing. Just that he goes really starey sometimes and wondered if that could be related.

Since making this topic he seems loads better, maybe he was just feeling off? He's trying to rub his head on my hands as I speak  and purrrrrrring his head off!

This COULD be an epileptic seizure, but most unconscious forms involve a period of stiffness, rather than becoming immediately floppy. I can think of other causes for this, such as a mild stroke, poisoning etc. As he hasn't done this again for such a long time, it's probably not worth treating. A stroke may explain the sleepiness, however, but I've no experience with them. Was he normally mobile when he'd recovered the sense of where he was etc, or was he limping?

Im not sure if it was a siezure or not but the vet said its likely.

He was under the bed and we heard a strange meow noise, looked under and he wasnt moving but had his eyes open. I shouted him but nothing so my partner got him from under the bed and he was completely floppy. I seriously thought he was dead and was in abcolute hysterics crying by this time. Then he came around looking very dazed and wondering what was going on, i was over the moon ;D

It was so scary though :(

When he had his seizure, what did he do? How did it look to you?

Can I ask what the flea treatment was? I have never heard of a 3 monthly one, but might be interested, Molly hates being de-flead.

Meeko was seen by the vet around 3 months ago anyway and everything was fine, he has the 3 monthly flea treatments and its been 3 months today thats why i have left it until today. As I said earlier i WOULD NOT let my cats suffer & they have been treated with frontline combo today & I will get worming treatment for them tomorrow.

He had a first sezuire around 12 months ago and the vet said it could be epilepsy but as he doesnt have them often they was no need to treat him, he has them every now and again thats all.

I will book him in for a general check up next week if he's still the same.

Thanks for your advice.

Sounds to me like this is flea related. You should frontline your cat BEFORE you notice fleas. I do mine every 2 months. Some need it monthly. He needs worming for round and tape worm too. Most vets won't hand out this treatment for the first time unless they've seen your cat, and after that they ask if he's been seen in the past 6 months.

Cats often stare into space. It's like they're looking at something we can't see. A small spider or mark on the wall. Has he done anything else unusual?

For now, I wouldn't go down the epilepsy route, the behaviour doesn't sound typical of any kind (except, maybe absences, and the treatment for this would make your cat sleepier). Instead, deflea and deworm with vet treatments. Allow several months for the cat to recover. It may aid recovery if you give some conditioning pills to boost his red blood cells, something with iron or B complex. Ask your vet about this. Vet treatments are always better than pet shop ones.

Good luck.

I think normally it would be OK to just get the treatment through your vet - although if they haven't been seen in a while, they do need to be seen, my vets also do the free flea/worm check. But, as he is seeming tired, then that is a sign that something isn't quite right, and you are best off having him seen before he has any treatment - as Ela said yesterday, you can't flea/worm a sick cat, you might make him worse.

Could I not just ask my vet for treatment for fleas, worms etc? Is there any reason why meeko would need to be looked at?

No, as most of the worm treatments are POM (Prescription only medicine). At our vets you can ask for a free flea/worm check (although you usually only see worms when the burden of them is too great for the body to sustain comfortably) and then you can purchase the treatments from the vets.

However as previously advise you should only flea and worm a well cat as as you stated

I think a vet check would be wise.

OK I might book him in for a check up. He's not ill as such though, just seems a little 'down in the dumps' or something. His nose is wet, he's eating and drinking etc & still running round the house like looney!

I think it would be wise for another vet check before you flea/worm as you should not flea/worm a sick cat. If a cat has fleas it will most certainly have tapeworm. I would also suggest that you ask the vet for some Staykill or Acclaim and spray the house.

Sorry I havent explained myself very well in the first post!

He's been off for a few weeks but i have only noticed that he has fleas today as he's started to fleck a little bit, I wouldnt leave him with fleas and not do anything about it!! I wondered if he's had them for longer but i havent noticed maybe?

He's around 3 years old.

I have been worried in the past about him have epilepsy or something simular as he had a 'funny turn' about 12 months ago and has episodes where he can stare at the wall for ages and looks really dazed... The vet basically said that it could be epilepsy and to keep an eye on him and bring him back if they occur regular. He just has them now and again normally then is fine for months, but he seems to be acting a little strange recently.

Any ideas if that could be connected? Any ideas what it could be?

Is he a kitten? Fleas can actually suck the life of out small cats, its gives them anaemia. Dont mean to sound funny but it would have been best to frontline him when you first noticed the fleas!  :wow: He will have been very itchy and you risk him overgrooming and developing a rodent ulcer!

I would suggest a vet check just to make sure theres not a high temp or something else brewing.

Hey Guys  :P

Just wondering can flea's effect a cats energy levels and mood?

Meeko seems to have fleas (He's going to be done with frontline tomorrow) and the past 2 weeks seems to have been 'different' in himself, I cant really say anything specific and he's eating and drinking fine. He just seems really tired and as though he feels rubbish sometimes but then other times he's ok, ive noticed this over the past 2 weeks but not felt he needed to see a vet as there are no proper symptoms if u know what i mean?

What do you think?
