Worming

I have to admit that my cats dont always get theirs done every 3 months, I dont look at the calendar well enough to know they should have it!! Should start putting it in the phone to get it to remind me!! And I haven't frontlined them yet, that should have been done last week too!!

For an indoor spayed cat that is much better than not all all, I would agree.

As long as you are guided by your vet, no one can argue with that.

I can't help wondering what monthly worming would do to the poor cats? Surely worming treatments are toxic to some extent. Personally, I prefer to do them every 6mths.

If it were unsafe vets would not recommendi it. 6 months is far to long a gap.

I Know someone who dont de flea there cats at all when no fleas r present and only worms twice a year


surely it aint good too keep using all these different treatments so reguarly?
i dont think id ever worm mine once a month thats too much imo im gonna check with my vet tommorow and ask her opinion

it was bad enough getting a tablet down them every 3mths lolol

forever read up on round worm lifecycles and life span etc..all kittens/puppies are born with and wormers only kill the lving adult worm, the larvae stages lie dormant in muscle and organ tissue for the duration of animals life span and some hatch out and migrate intermittently, each one of those is capable of starting the cycle all over again so cats and dogs all have worms in some stage and will never be free of them totally.

but if you are interested in furthering your knowledge i'd suggest doing your own reasearch online and getting the lifecycle into your head so you understand it better.

cat hasnt got fleas how do they get the worms

The tapeworm is related to the flea, but there are other types of worms

what ive never understood is .....if a cat dont hunt and kill anything

This is what is being discussed, the vets and manufacturers are now recommending monthly in ALL AND EVERY dog/cat in hope to eventually erradicate worms all together but as desley and ela are saying both their vets arent very optimisitic this will happen.

Wouldn't it just. Also what makes me smile is all the people who say when you ask about flea and worm treatments) Oh! my cat has never had fleas and worms. I am sure even the Queens dogs have had an odd flea in their time.

Am glad it isn't just my vet, but I do think my vet has a similar outlook to Eric - they are telling people, but whether people listen is a different matter. Woudl be nice not to have kittens and puppies born with worms though

It was nice this morning a there was just me, Stuart*, Eric and Carol his wife, so  I could ask him questions without thinking I was taking up his valuable time and knowing  there were other patients waiting. *Oh dear I forgot we took Jonty too.

i totally agree with eric.

i guess idea senario if all cats/ dogs were wormed every month with good wormer from now on and forever more then eventually there might be pups and kittens born worm free, however i honestly cant see that happening for an awfully long time to come.

I have been speaking to Eric (vet) this morning about the monthly recommendation. He said yes, nowadays it is recommended but he couldn't see it happening as they cannot get people  worm every 3 months, he said if they did just that then things would be much better. He also said that if vets start telling people every month many people will think is is just another way to get more money. He also stated that particularly when a female  is in season they should be wormed as at that time the worms leave the muscles and go into the gut to lay eggs. Um nice

I have just changed vets and as mine don't need worming or flee treatment till next month I don't know. I think I shall book them in for a check, it's free for new patients, and ask then.

WEll, it is the manufacturers that are saying it, but my vets are putting it on the printed label too - we dont get the information sheets with most of the meds, so it is the only way to notify people. It would be very difficult to prove it, but I said it cos it is the only thing I can think of why my vet seems to be the only one saying it.

Maybe my vet is just being incredily cautious to prevent any risk of them being sued in case someones child gets blind due to their pet not being wormed enough.

Wouldn't that be down to the Manufacturers, also proving that the problem stemmed from your cat I would think would be very difficult.

canine roundworm

Even for that which is known to cause problems most vets are still only recommending worming only  every every 3 months. Perhaps it will all change soon.

interesting desley, i wander if "they" are thinking feline roundworm is more of a risk than initially thought.

Some of you might remember me mentioning worming being done every month - I thought of asking the vet about it tonight, and apparently, they (not sure who she meant by they actually, but some people!!) are wondering if there is a link between an eye prob and a certain type of roundworm - unconfirmed, and they dont know which roundworm, but it only affects young children and immuno-compressed, so that is why they are now suggesting monthly worming, and my vets are doing it really to cover their back. Do wonder why no one else is being told it though!!
