Because I preferred the idea of a battery run flap rather than a mains. There's nowhere that's really practical we could've plugged in a cat flap - our kitchen is tiny and most of the plug sockets are already in use. I was a bit concerned that with it being a little smaller that Sage (our rather comely tabby....

) might have trouble but she seems OK with it. The others are fine to get through size wise, as well.

I picked the Sureflap one mainly due to having the battery option, that it was less wider than the pet porte and the cheaper price. It took a while before the lads got used to it. The sure flap door is smaller than normal sized catflap doors so they took a while to get used to getting legs and body through! Also Garf was ok with it but Marl hated the clunking sound of the door clip going down so with him i had to re trainf from scratch - ie Have it as a normal flap with dooe held open till he got used to that then door held open but with the cluck (that took a while for him to get used to) !
He had to stay in at night where Garf went out cause he wouldn't go through flap!

It defeninately worked in keeping Andy (Aka Asbo stray - now not a stray lol) out of the house. They certainly felt more at ease with no spraying in their home! So i am happy with it and they are both using it no probs now.

I would say there are disadvantages
- It has a small door (but they do get used to it as long as not too.... rounded!!) lol
-It is a loud "clunk" sound and we can hear when they go in and out from upstairs
-The 4 way locking system is controlled by a little grey tab and Garf has managed to move this so he can't get out. I have seen other cats do this as well looking at reviews!

Never had a prob with the chips and it was very easy to programme with the lads. We have a young adult unuetered Tom B&W arround now and he isn't a stray so it is doing it's job keeping him out of the house

I am trying to find out where this Tom lives to try and convince owners to have him done as he is sparying in the garden coplue of times a week. The lads are doing a grand job of chasing him out of their patch though instead of actually fighting like they used to with Asbo.

Hmm would i have gone for the pet Porte now? I think if it has a larger door and i also think if there is no loud clicking noise with that one i might "upgrade" later to it. But i am not sure if the pet Porte can now be run on only batteries? I still have the same batteries in the sureflap and had it now since 6th Dec. Brought from Pet supermarket for £62.

Wonder if anyone has the Pet Porte?

Thanks. Am still waiting for madam to be interested in going outside; typical isn't it? Really hated putting her through chipping again and it was made worse by a vet who had clearly not been told all the details I left with reception on Friday making me feel worse by saying it was "frowned upon" to have more than one chip in an animal; like I'd not considered that as well as the psychological impact on Astryd going for another chipping.

Felt like a real meanie and am soooo hoping this works. The ironic thing is, it's Astryd that's the most put out by the intruders so it's mainly for her we needed some security!

OK, Astryd had to be rechipped today in an ongoing attempt to recognise her! We're hoping to programme the chip number in this evening; wish us luck.

The problem with Astryds chip is still ongoing, transpires however next doors cat had got in had altered the setting and the lock was down permanently that's why she suddenly became able to use it.....

Soooo the flap is currently set as a normal flap, and I've emailed Sureflap. I received this today:

We have recently found that with a very small percentage of the types of chips that Astryd has we need to adjust the reading frequency of the SureFlap. This is easily done in one of two ways.

And the company offer you help with both ways. I have to say now that although I hate having to use customer service the people there are really lovely and patient.

Apparently my partner was a bit confused as to how he got in so went to check and he could push the cat flap open with no resistance at all - that's not right surely?

I'll give him brute force, little sod....

I wouldn't mind but he has absolutely NO reason to do it. My next door neighbour leaves her window open for him to get in and out at night in good weather, and tries to get him in before she goes to bed in bad. (She has a shelter for her two cats in case she fails.) The smaller of the two to my knowledge will only wander in if we leave our door open. I also know that she leaves them a big bowl of biscuits down so they can graze feed during the night. Can only assume he just wants to live here and next door; not going to happen.

Not sure what else we can do.....

Right, microchip cat flap to deter THREE visitors to the house finally fitted. The problem is, that for some reason despite stopping flashing when Astryd went through it seems to not open when she tries to come back in.

All we can assume is that it's because she's taught herself to open the cat flap by pushing it open with her front feet first instead of headbutting it. (It works for Mog and Darwin, and Sage scanned too as far as we can tell.)

What can we do to make sure it's accepting her chip properly?
