Nothing to do with the thread but...one day last week I caught my vet smoking  it was after hours and I was a bit late getting there, he looked at me with a guilty look and threw the fag behind his back  :evillaugh:
Just because your out of sight, does not mean your out of mind <3

In my heart I know MY smoking probably killed  Issey (well caused her to get Lymphoma)

My Gypsy came from a smoking home - she too smelt like an ashtray when I brought her home here, I've often wondered if the smoking caused her death too (we didnt have investigations done, but vet thought possible tumour in her lungs). Mind you, Honey, who came with Gypsy from the same household seems healthy (although smoking owner had only had Honey a year or so, whereas she'd had Gyps since she was a kitten - so Gyps had been exposed to the smoking for 7 yrs.

This also makes perfect sense -
Cat smell of smoke which means its on their fur, then they lick their fur ...BINGO !

I can honestly say I have never smelt anything as bad as the cat that was in last week, I know i said it earlier but he smelt like an ashtray...poor little fella  :-[

I used to live in a 1 bed flat and my neighbours had 2 cats and it was so smoky in there you couldn't see from one end of the room to the other -they both smoked 40 a day each  They used to row and shout a lot too .
I used to lay in bed next door cuddling Oscar and saying -bet you are glad you don''t live there .

They have also since moved to a 3 bed house ,but they still both smoke -not sure how heavy though .

I am lucky i tried it a couple of times when i was young ( around 40 years ago!) and could never get the hang of it , so didn''t bother after that and never bothered about it since.

I'm not trying to make smokers feel bad, but I would urge anyone who smokes to ensure they dont' smoke around their cats.  I know this article is a bit out of date now, but it does seem as though smoking has an extremely detrimental effect on cats

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/2165722.stm

Actually Susanne smokers, including myself, should feel bad .....because without feeling bad people will continue to smoke around there animals.

there is a part in the article that says -
"Feline lymphoma kills three out of four cats within a year of being diagnosed"
In my heart I know MY smoking probably killed  Issey (well caused her to get Lymphoma)   :'(  and theres nothing I can do about that, however though, by now not smoking I will hopefully prevent any of my other cats from dieing from a smoke related condition.

I don't want to sound like a preacher but please please think before smoking round your cats because I'd hate anyone else to feel how I do........

OH used to smoke in the lounge when the kids were in bed until I pointed out that poor Marley (didnt have the cats and Ben at this point) was just as likely to be affected by 2nd hand smoke, he now stands outside!!

I smoked for the first few years that I had Max too, and in the house as well as it was a flat with no garden, and not an area you'd particularly want to stand outside on your own!!  :shy:

Michelle you have a very good point there. I never realised how bad the smell was until I gave up. We never smoked in the house or in the cat Pens in a bid to protect the animals, we smoked on the patio outside the kitchen.

I havent posted this before but when Minimopsical was PTS with lung cancer last month my first thought was that somehow my smoking had caused it, I will never know if that is the case but will never smoke again either. I gave up 7 and a half months ago.

As an ex-smoker too I look back horrified at the clouds of smoke we used to create and that fact that Tiggy had to live in those conditions  :( Thankfully we didn't smoke in the house for very long, maybe a year at most so she 'only' had a year of it but it's still not good.

You can't change the past and the main thing is that you've stopped now  I'm sure your cats all smell lovely now and if their lungs were in any way affected they will be functioning normally. I remember teh chart of what happened to the lungs of a human smoker the longer they had given up, the effects of passive smoking would obviously be minimal compared to a human smoker themselves but the potential to heal will be the same.

I admit I have become the typical ex-smoker
however something has really concerned Me...............

I can tell which clients smoke by the smell of their cats  also the carries, bedding etc
One cat who came in last week literally smelt like an ashtray
So if the cats smell that bad of smoke surely their little lungs must be  :censored: from the smoke ??

I gave up smoking when Issey was diagnosed with Lymphoma as one of the things I read was cats from smoking owners were 50% more likely to develop it
