I think Pepsi understands what I'm saying, or at least she gets the gist due to the tone of my voice. So if she's been naughty she might not understand 'get down from the worktop' any better than she knows 'stop trying to steal food from the plates' but she realises it's different to 'hello gorgeous, mammy has missed you at work and wants some cuddles'  I think she gets frustrated at me for not knowing what she's saying all of the time though, I know her different meows but sometimes she'll meow, I'll check and her food and water bowls are full, litter tray is clean etc and she'll keep on doing it. I think she just wants a chat  :)

Skye doesn't much like to be spoken to, but if I sing the words to her she purrs.  Wierd!

Meant to say, Freddie loves being sung to though  :)  esp the "drip drip drop little April showers" and "we're off to see the Wizard the wonderful wizard of Oz"   :sneakin:

Billy understands every word but but takes every word to heart so you have to be careful what you say  :shify:.  Dinah, Millie and Ruby enjoy being talked to and Millie and Ruby respond on occasion  :)

Noni enjoys a really good natter and always has the last word.......  :innocent:

Freddie however constantly follows me around and squeaks at me and I ask him what he wants but neither of us understand a word we say to each other.  He has such a very puzzled expression................ all the time.  It's very sad  ;)

The Munchkin understands nearly everything we say. I know exactly what people mean about the furrowed brow look- he uses that when he thinks we're talking rubbish. I understand more or less everything he says but occasionally I don't get it. Then he shouts at me.  :Luv2:

Amber is kind of scary. She understands things that I say in passing whilst expecting her to ignore me and ignores the things I expect her to understand....

for example one year I was having a nice soak in the bath and she decided to remove a bauble from the christmas tree and brought it in the bathroom to show me. I told her to put it back as it belonged to the tree not her. After my bath I went bauble hunting and found it returned under the tree
The other extreme is that she looks at me totally blankly when I say its food time until I actually pick her bowl up.

She also does the purring if you look at her  :Luv:

Sophie understands the word "Milk " !!! She also loves you to talk to her and answers back and purrs.
Winston loves you to talk to him (understands the word "Fish, wee wee, out, in, and lots of other things ) but he loves you to put your face close to him and whisper -he tries to look in your mouth to see where the words are coming from !

Memphis understands everything I say  :Luv:

I'm always having conversations with him, and he replies every single time, if asked a question. His reply is ALWAYS at the perfect time. If I ask him to get off of something, he will. I don't need to go over/point or do anything except ask.

He knows everything  :) he knows exactly which room I'm going in. When I call him he comes every single time. The boys just so smart and in-tune with me.

The only problem we have is I can't understand him soooo I've asked him if he'll consider learning English  :evillaugh:

lay me down, let me go, feeling heavy the ground is cold,
lay me down take it slow I'm ready to stumble, sing & then swing low

My boys understand every word I say.  Jaffa gets a bit frustrated with me when I dont' understand him.  He gives me that look that says "I'm saying it as clearly as I can - what bit of I'm starving and need feeding don't you understand?"

Yogi and Daisy understand everything I say to them - then mostly ignore it uless it means I'm going to give them some food.

Skye doesn't much like to be spoken to, but if I sing the words to her she purrs.  Wierd!

Ellie doesn't really like being spoken to, it will make her dash back into her safe place. She has got better this week though, but still think she would prefer not to be spoken to at all.
Please spay your cat

I think Lotties post gives the answer and yes they understand in their own little way and some things like their names and no, they definately understand but choose whether to ignore

Misa and Franta and to some extent Sasa like to try and out think me and anticipate which room I am going to go in. Misa was all excited just now cos was coming back to the pc from the tv and Franta has learnt to try to walk wityh me rather than dive into a room and me walk past.

Misa and Sasa will come in thro the flap late at night if I put kitchen light on as they think its bedtime and they are going to get new food  :innocent:

Lottie you must learn some basic Dutch for Orion  ;D

I would suggest that, like men, they don't understand a word you're saying and just frown and nod sagely at various points to make it look as though they are listening. ' cos they know they'll get a treat!  :evillaugh:

Boopy gets a worried or blank look if you say something to her in English she doesn't understand it's rather amusing although it wasn't funy when I first got her and she was absolutely terrified if you spoke to her in English and would run and hide. She wouldn't come out from under the dining room table the other night despite me asking her nicely several times so I asked her in French and she came out immediately bless her.

As you were, ladies, as you were

Having spent a decade with us, Blip understands quite a lot: arguably as much as many people of either gender  ;)

I like it Christine :evillaugh:

And to answer the original question - cats are remarkably empathic, so if you are feeling worried and so forth, he will respond to that and will give you lots of cuddles in return. He may be frowning cos you are hugging him too tight!

Telling your cat your darkest secrets doesnt worry them in the least, cats are intelligent enough to realise that a problem shared is a problem halved and they will probably get an extra treat for listening and being cuddlesome
