We've floating wood floors, cork and tiles throughout, simply because it's easier to keep clean. Having gone that route, I won't be going back to carpet anywhere: I've seen the water after cleaning each few days / week.
We do have a number of rugs, which I ship off to Pilgrim Payne a couple of times a year.
Blip does scratch the rugs from time to time but only when she's frustrated or excited about something.
Hard floors are going to be a better bet with the changing climate too...
