I paid £180 for Blue with the same issue but they also fixed his hernia, chipped and injected him - also deflea and ear mites done to - with our ferals its everything at once as with some of the darlings its the closest we get for many months :evillaugh:

I don't think the rcvs are able to do anything about pricing.  That does sound expensive, but without seeing the itemised bill and knowing exactly what the money is for, it's impossible to say whether it is a fair price or not.  Funny how the price was one figure then it went up because they "missed some items off"  :shify:  I would make sure he gets an itemised bill and ask them to explain what each individual item is to make sure he's not being double charged for anything.

But his bill was just for a chop

I paid £600 in vet bills over xmas but that included 4 lots of vaccs + all Willow's treatment & meds, icluding a couple of home visits.

My bill for Fifi was almost £250 !! Thats not including the £41 i paid in the beginning .
This problem that i thought was cystitis ( still not really sure what it was !!) she ended up with blood tests , 2 nights at the vets , x-ray ( they also did a scan -but they didn''t charge me for that as they said it was for their curiosity as they didn''t know what it was ) and she was flushed through with fluids as they couldn't get a catheter in her as she was too small !
Also got 5 days antibiotics on top and the cost of 3 injections from Monday and the tuesday .
Still not sure what it was though - gone from tear in bladder , ruptured bladder, bladder cancer ( she had blood in her wee -but not visible to the naked eye ), abnormal cells which could be cancer cells or protein and still none the wiser and she seems absolutely fine - its a mystery

On the flip side, I took a call from another vet today. They had a 2 year old female dumped on them a few weeks ago. They have spayed and vaccinated her and wanted to know if we could rehome her  :) - Sharon has spoken to them and I'm sure something can be done  ;)

Some vets do seem to make it up as they go along! I took Noah last week for claws clipping and ear cleaning, as it was our first time at that clinic they wouldn't let the nurse treat him without vet giving him the once over (fair enough) so quoted £25 plus any meds. When I got the bill it was £18 and a few pence ...  :shify: I paid and left sharpish.
:'( My beautiful Noah rescued 13/02/09, adopted 11/10/09, taken 11/02/11 :'( You deserved so much more.

It depends on how much rooting around they have to do to find it. In some cases it's major surgery... longer on the table, more meds, more aftercare etc. I had an awkward crypto 8 years ago which cost me £195 by the end of it.  :tired:

Thats mad!  wonder if they charge time to find the missing 'item' like the way dentals are priced up, if it was well hidden it could account for the cost (by some degree)

Did he get an itemised bill

I asked him about the itemised bill  and he said he has asked for one when he goes to collect. I don't know who else he can take the matter up with other than RCVS?

I really was tempted to ask him why he didn't get a price beforehand - I always do. Most vets give you a quote with a min & a max price on?

He said nothing else was done. Even if he did have bloods done, my vet whos prices are average, charges about £50 for standard full bloods (without hyperT) - which still makes it double

Blimey I thought we had the most expensive vets in surrey at up to £60-70 for a normal castrate + around £55 for an undescended!!

Did he get an itemised bill - would be interesting to see what was on it. Wonder if they did bloods??  Even if they did, don't know how they can justify £264.

I know knew they were expensive - that is the main reason our branch doesn't use them, although they have a food bin  :evillaugh:

OH thinks I am embarrassing the way I cross T's & dot I's where prices are concerned - but I always say some people will charge what they think they can get away with and this proves it.

its stuff like this that puts people off going to the vet - its awful - my star was in labour for two days needing a c section because the people didn't think they could afford a vet - as it is they probably couldn't but could have checked - luckily they had the sense to dump her at the rspca

This is a man than had apparently phoned us about a stray before xmas. He homed it and took it for neutering today. He said he took voluntary redundancy at xmas so wasn't entitled to a voucher but was stunned at what they are charging him. He said the cat had a retained testicle - I told him that does cost more but........

Originally they phoned him and told him £170. He phoned them back with a debit card to pay and they said they had missed some items off and it was £264

I asked if the cat was in overnight or there were other things being done. He said no, he dropped the cat off at 8.30am and was told to collect this afternoon.

I have told him to speak to RCVS and given him some random prices I found in the internet. One vet in leciester quoted £33.50 for a basic castration + £45 extra for a retained testicle. I told him that might be on the cheap side so maybe £100 or so would have been "ball" park.

This is the vet next door to me who OH threatened with court last weekend. If they are charging prices like that, they can afford decent sound proofing!!!!
