Funnily enough, I was remarking only yesterday to OH that Blip - a female cat - is left-pawed.

Is your cat right pawed or left pawed?
« Reply #19 on: March 28, 2010, 14:09:29 PM »
From our local cat rescue newsletter:

'Researchers at Queens University Befast have published research indicating that female cats are nearly always right pawed while most male cats are left pawed. In tests, cats were ambidextrous when carrying out simple tasks such as pawing at a toy mouse but when it came to more complex tasks such as fishing treats out of a jar they were clearly either right or left pawed. In the study 20 out of 21 female cats were right pawed while 20 out of 21 male cats were left pawed'.

Our Munchkin seems to buck the trend, being male and definitely right pawed. So how about your babies? Does the research hold true?  ;D

I think Jaffa favours his left paw but Mosi uses all paws and feet equally!  ;D

[Obviously if people have cats that won't do that ... I'm sure we could accept pictures of swipe injuries ..

I thinnk this was a left hook

Ooh it does sound as if it's more normal for cats!  Geoffrey is a lefty too, it's the paw he prods me in the face with when he's trying to wake me up in the morning  :naughty:

No idea what Milly is, I will try and find out...

Interesting one this - certainly the last 3 cats I've had have all been lefties.

Im trying to remember what paw Blackie swipes with....would that count!  :evillaugh:

Very interesting.....But too much hard work here....I will try this out on a couple of girls/boys if that helps!  ;)

Anything helps.

Memphy will wiggle a paw if you dangle food/toys in front of him. It is always his left paw. Obviously if people have cats that won't do that ... I'm sure we could accept pictures of swipe injuries .. whether it is on the humans left cheek or right  :naughty:

:wow: ooh, good observation Den - I'll be having a lookie now!  I do know that when Schui had all his teeth out his tongue hung out to 1 side and I told my vet and she said it's because he sort of doesn't know where to put it now they've no teeth but often it's just a temp thing, plus......(and this I found interesting) they tend to favour 1 side and the side which it plops out at is like us being left/right handed  ;D

Please consider the harder to home cats in rescue.

Great question.  I thoght I knew everything about Bonnie but not that.

I know she swipes me with her left paw when she wants to wake me up in bed but that might just be because of the side of the bed I'm on.  Will try and take notice.

Will sleep on it and try to work out a way, but a very good idea  :wow: would also be interesting to see if there is a gender divide too!!
 this could get very complicated!

Ahh, not sure how to do a poll ... Options would be left, right, ambidextrous, other .. But most members have multiple cats so I think it would be a bit difficult to poll for them all.

id noticed this and always meant to start a topic on it so...
lucifer is also a lefty! sparecat favours headbutting and noseing things first  :-: but shes a little special.
Lucifer also sleeps on my left foot, never the right. in my old place that was the inside side of the bed, now its the outside so i dont htink its to do with that. maybe he knows hes a lefty  :shify:

would a poll be interesting?

Left pawed or right pawed?
« Reply #1 on: December 06, 2009, 22:30:37 PM »
I've just happened to notice over the past few weeks that Memphy favours his left paw. So I've been testing it out and he is without a doubt left pawed  :) I just test it by hiding treats in places where he has to use his paws to get it out .. Without fail he uses his left paw first, then tries with his right and always goes back to being a lefty.

So I was wondering what other Purrs kitties are?

Lefty or a backwards Righty?  :evillaugh:
