Sometimes aswell people take a nothing at the moment as a straight no when it isnt.
I cant see working p/t as a problem, surely being out of work would be more questionable as to affording good care...

My local CP wouldn't give me the time of day when I enquired about homing 2 kittens 12 years ago - as soon as I mentioned keeping them indoors they weren't interested.  They also were very rude when I said I worked full time (I had said I was prepared to rehome and older kitten or young adult cat, I wasn't just interested in small kittens).  My local rspca were better and were prepared to rehome to indoor homes.  In the end, I went to a rescue that didnt' do home checks or ask too many questions.  Although those who are committed to getting a cat from a rescue will persist with another rescue if they get a discouraging response, others will feel put off altogether by a bad experience and go to free to good home ads instead.  But of course, as others have said, sometimes rescues dont always give the true reason for turning someone down (they should imo, but I can understand why they dont' always) so there may be more to this case than initially  meets the eye.

I was turned down by my local branch of RSPCA via e-mail as basically they don't like the concept of indoor cats, despite clearly stating I'd be happy to adopt an adult with a health condition: Adel CP were much more open to the idea and came to homecheck after a brief chat on the phone.  :wow: Given that my Noah has pododermatitis so can't go on rough surfaces, doesn't get on with other cats or dogs, has bitten/ nipped so can't be around children, if you'd added in the need for a grassed outdoor run .... It's difficult to imagine him having found a home - how many people have a garden yet can guarantee no children or other pets for the next fifteen years??
:'( My beautiful Noah rescued 13/02/09, adopted 11/10/09, taken 11/02/11 :'( You deserved so much more.

Trigger, not all CP branches are the same,

Totally agree Desley and I'm certainly not taring every CP branch with the same brush.

It was just ashame this lady was turned down over the phone

we will happily home kittens where people work part time and even full time if they are getting 2 kittens.
We do like kittens to go in pairs where possible so this may be the real reason she was turned down, perhaps the kitten she wanted needed to go as a pair.

Sometimes you do have to be polite and grab a 'better' reason for not rehoming, sometimes we just go on instincts. After all, if we didn't follow our gut then we wouldn't be able to do what we do.

I do forget where people live Gill!!

My point was that we have guests reading the forum, and posts like this might put people off going to their local rescue which is why I tried to show a different picture.

There is no local Cp here Desley and trigger is further away from one than I am.

The point here I think is that we on Purrs are the priviledged few who know more about what happening out there and with cats, most just dont have the level of knowledge that most on Purrs have.

Trigger, not all CP branches are the same, they dont have rules from HQ, each branch can do things their own way, so I would suggest speaking to your local branch and making sure you are happy with their ways before questioning your donations. Also, if you donate to just CP it will go to HQ rather than your local branch, so you might want to check out where your donation is going.

I dont know of many rescues who turn people away for working part time, but sometimes rescues dont give the real reason for turning people away, for whatever reason. I also think that people who have been turned away should go to at least one more rescue rather than going straight to free ads - we often homed to people who had been turned away from the strictest rescue, as we didn't agree with not homing with young children.

Just to prove not all rescues are like this, I did a home check on Fri for two kittens - they have their nephew living with them who must have been 5 at the oldest (but looked younger), and everyone in the house works (although they all do shift work, so there is generally no more than a few hours between one person leaving and one coming), they will be going on Mon.

in both feet too, Michelle, as not only does this sort of story make people like me question the donations I make to CP, but another cat is denied an excellent home

and that cat continues to occupy a place which could have gone to another in desperate need

it makes me so so cross >:( >:(

Turned down on the phone AGAIN !!

I spent quite awhile chatting with this lady...she has had the kitten wormed, treated for flea's, injections are booked and she will be having it spayed at 6mths GREAT HOME imo

I got talking to a lady today -

She had got intouch with CP as she wanted a kitten.
Quiet road, large garden, cat flap, children over 5yrs old
but horror of horrors she dared to work part time  :wow:

So needless to say she ended up getting a kitten from the free ads !

Sometimes it does seem rescues are shooting themselves in the foot and forcing people to use BSB's
