We brought our cat to a holiday in the Alps last year, which was an 8 hour journey each way.  Since his regular carrier (which was really designed for cats at 5kg or less) was getting rather tight for him, therefore we built a DIY cage putting together 2 of the plastic foldable crates we got from LIDL (about 50cm long), sicuring several points with large cable fasteners and lined the bottom with a bathtowel, last used by me while working out (he loves sitting on my sweaty towel  :-: ).  It was significantly roomier than the carrier, and from our shopping trips we knew these crates were very sturdy and dependable even for a 7kg cat.  We had his tray handy so we could pull it out quickly for use if he had an "emergency" (it happened once on the return trip...).  We didn't give him anything to eat though we was afraid of him getting sick.  We placed the cage on the back seat, but in a way that he could look out between the front seat and see us, and I could turn around and fuss him (the upper flap could be opened).
The journey went well enough, he was pretty calm (except for the moment he had the nature's calling) throughout, though he has grown even further since then so we will probably have to invent something else on the next occasion... :tired:

I know CarolM and swampmaxmum have both travelled regularly from France with their cats so hopefully they will be along soon and be able to advise.  Are you coming back permanently or just for a visit?

catkins will be going back fulltime so just the one trip back, we cannot fit in a dog cage as we have the baby (and all his equipment) to squeeze in aswell.  thanks lottie for the suggestion, i saw those puppy pads and have ordered a couple for the trip.

I used a Clipper Idhra to bring Boopy from the French/German border back to NE Scotland. Make sure you have enough room for a small litter tray and I'd also advise putting a puppy training pad under some vetbed just in case they are sick or have an accident. Attach a water dish to the door so that the cat can drink as they wish and if they have a favourite toy or something then pop it in the carrier so they have something familiar smelling as that will help keep them calm.

A dog crate is another option but it really depends on whether your cat is one who'd be happier being able to see everything that's going on or not.

Make sure you think about the storage of the cage/carrier after the journey and what you will be using it for ie if you are never going to fly a cat anywhere then it doesn't need to be an IATA approved carrier and if you won't be regularly doing long/cross border trips then you don't want to fork out for a huge carrier that's too big to use for general vet trips etc just for 1 foreign journey

Hope this helps  :)

Need Travel Cage Recommendations Needed

This is the first time we are taking our cat back to the UK, until now the cat has only been on short trips of around 45 minutes. We have a 7 hour journey ahead of us (with young baby and cat gosh its going to be fun!)  We have a standard pet carrier but as that's associated with the vets we wanted to buy another cage or transport carrier to go in the car for the big journey - this way we want buy it now and give her a few months to get used to it (as recommended by the FAB article)

Does anyone have any recommendations on transport for cats for long journeys, had a look on zooplus but most seem for dogs?

Thanks
Helen x
