I think he should learn to use the tray pretty quickly, I believe my recent addition didn't use a tray when he initially went his fosterer and he's 17 but he soon learnt.  He also has a stumpy tail (don't know what happened though)  Hope things go ok for Jijo

Thank you everyone.

I will try the scraping the litter trick and see if he remembers from his kiittenhood.  ;D

I can't put the tray by the door though because that is where the cat flap is and Izzi will still be using that (she would probably use his litter tray as well :evillaugh:)

Did she try to bite the bandage off Liz?

I asked the vet why they didn't put dressings on and he just made some excuse about the cat will try to rip them off and get to the stitches anyway.  I would prefer it to have a dressing but he wouldn't do it :-:

Jijo has to go and be checked on Friday, but it will be a different vet so i will ask again.

Thankyou :)

So sorry to hear about the accident but have to say I think that vet a bit lax!

I am sure at one time he will have used a tray indoors and knows how to and he will have to use it eventually.

Especially after an op it often takes a couple of days before they use one, so wouldnt worry just yet.

I would take him to the tray and gentle place him in it tonight after making scraping noises in it, he will get the idea even if he doesnt use it,

Then tomorrow if he hasnt used it still repeatt this. I would think by tomorrow night he will have used it.

Maybe put it by the door where he goes out normally.

Make sure that collar stays on

This happened to our peanut 3 months ago - the vet stitched the bandage on to the tail so she didn't have to wear a buster collar

She was inside for 10 days with 2 vets visits inbetween to check her tail and is now has all her hair back and a slightly shorter tail

Help End of Jijo's Tail Amputated !

I am so upset and worried about my Jeej.

This Sunday his tail was accidently stood on by a visitor we had staying with us.  He pulled away but left the end of his tail behind   The skin literally peeled off the bone.

We took him to the vet who said that he would have to have about 2 inches amputated leaving enough skin to pull over the end.

He had this done on Monday and when I collected him I was told that as long as he didn't mess with the stitches he wouldn't have to wear a buster collar and he could go outside once the anaesthetic had worn off properly (couple of days).  He was fine all yesterday afternoon and this morning his tail end looked fine (although like a finger) so I left him to it while I went to work.  However I was a bit worried because he will not go to the loo indoors and he was holding in his urine.  I called in at the vets on the way home and they said to just let him out and if he got his tail dirty to bathe it with salty water.  What a relief! until I got home that is.  I walked in and there was Jijo with blood dripping off the end of his tail.  On close examination he had bitten off the end and ripped out all his stitches (internal, dissolvable ones).  So, straight back to the vet.  He was re-stitched, this time with the normal stitches and now I have to keep him in for 10 days, and he will have to wear a collar.

At the moment he is still sleepy from the sedatives he was given when he was restitched but when he comes round and he has to wear the collar I just know he will be distraught and he will keep getting it off.  I am also worried about getting him to go to the loo.

Any advice would be appreciated about toilet training an 11 year old cat, how long stitches take to heal (so I can take away the collar asap), and anything else that might be useful.

Thanks guys
