The vet had to give me a prescription, Janey. He's fully aware of the situation.

In all honesty, this may all prove moot because Jack is so bad I honestly think he's letting go; and if I get given the advice I think I'm going to get today I may have to let go too.

Yep I know the vet has to give you a prescription to change the meds, it was the second part of the quote where you said should I possibly consider giving him one tablet a day? - was what I was referring to.

I really feel for you now and so sorry that Jack seems so poorly

Thanks. My lift arrives in about quarter of an hour.

If the vet says syringe feeding daily for a couple of weeks will help him we'll try that. But I don't want to prolong the situation if Jack's really unhappy. He jumped off a chair I'd put him on earlier and basically collapsed.

We're still waiting for his new meds to arrive. They should be here in the next couple of days.

With regards to the possibility of his thyroid going too low - should I maybe consider giving him one tablet a day and seeing if he feels a bit less bleurgh?

Well tbh I wouldn't alter thyroid meds without asking vet, reason because I presume they have a time over which they want to see how they are plus they have all the notes etc.  I never adjusted my own I left it for specialist to alter so I don't think I would my cat and if I was really worried then I'd get back onto vet and ask if could reduce it  but that's just my personal opinion  :shy:  It can be a pain I know, Pep's now on 2 a day and he's not taken his first one so far despite 2 attempts so I can see this is going to be fun!

Jack started his meds about two and a half weeks ago - nearly three. It worries me, because every now and  then I see slight improvements and get my hopes up only to have them crash down again when he slumps.

It is possible that his thyroid had gone down, Pep's T4 went down over 100 from <200 to 84 in 4wks

I would see how the new meds go JS, it could be that what he is on hasn't reacted well to the first ones. My neighbour said there is a new place in the UK that does the radioactive therapy and they do only have to stay in a couple of weeks, but then they are housebound for a couple more weeks - I wouldnt consider it for Sam, it is either meds or the op for him, everytime you sit down he is on your knee, so even 2 weeks would be awful for him.

Eugh, really? He'd have to stay at the vets a month? That's a no-go. He'd hate it and would probably suffer at least a couple of panic attacks.

Thanks Gillian - I'll mention how zonked he is and see what they say.

Would he cope being away from home? Thats what worries me about that option, the couple of weeks without being cuddled at a vets.

Yes I would be concerned about that option because of the time away - think its about 4 weeks isnt it? Depends on the cat I suppose. I can't understand why its so long here, because in the US I'm sure they can go home much sooner.

he's zonked permanently. It's terrifying, but I have no idea if it's normal for a hyper-t cat.

Sounds like the dose might need adjusting? may be that the thyroid levels have gone too low.

I hope the felimazole helps him, not every drug suits everyone so maybe he just needs to swap to get that under control.

I'm going to call my vet tomorrow and ask about the radiation therapy. We aren't just coping with his hyper-t we've got his appetite issues too and we need to get on top of one to be able to focus on the other. I was hoping his appetite would improve, but no such luck.

He's not chilled out Janey, he's zonked permanently. It's terrifying, but I have no idea if it's normal for a hyper-t cat.

Has anyone tried the (radioactive iodine) therapy for hyper-t?

You know, I was very tired and totally opposite after I'd been taking meds a while, it isn't that long though since Jack started meds is it?  when does he have his bloods tested again?

Unfortunately only with humans - my aunty was also hypert. and she had the iodine and it worked well she is now on thyroxine though.

I was thinking of asking about it for Pep as I doubt he'd be candidate for op. although I do think my vet would have mentioned it to me.

I think I might try some a/d on Willow and also the paste. I need to check the phosphorus content first - although I could add binders. she had lost 200g which a lot for a small cat. She was 2.6kg and now 2.4kg. She has barely eaten today. I just counted and she ate 5 Hill's biscuits and AFAIK, that is it all day. She did eat 1/2 pouch overnight and had some cooked mince and cooked pork before bed.

hard to say really you should probably just mention to the vet but maybe he's just less hyper than he was and is feeling more chilled out, that is a good possibility and how meds made me feel and tbh it is much better feeling.

Desley, we've tried A/D and he's sporadically interested in cat milk. (worryingly)

Gillian, did it help your two? And Mark, even if all it does is pile on a bit of weight for him, I think that'd be an improvement for the poor lad. That supplement you had sounds rank!
