You will also have to keep her in for 10 days or so after she is neutered cos she will be wearing a collar to stop her pulling out the stitches and therefore it will be dangerous for her outside.

The alternative to keeping her in is sadly almost certainly that she will become pregnant.  I think you know that only too well and the last thing you need is another lot of kittens to look after.  The next best thing to keeping her in is to beg and plead with your vet to bring forward her spay operation to as soon as possible.  An awful lot can and almost certainly will happen before the end of September  :(.

Just seen your last post.  I don't know how long it takes to get a voucher but if you explain the urgency, I'm sure CP will understand.

Perhaps we can bring forward the spaying, but have to get voucher from CP as am unemployed at the moment. Any idea how long that process can take?

Sorry but you must keep her inside until after she has been neutered,,,,,,she will go crazy looking for a mate outside and they will find her, you will not be able to catch her.

The problem is, we currently have 3 adult outdoor cats in the house so keeping her in will be very difficult if not impossible as we don't have a cat flap.

Nevertheless, we are getting her done at the end of Sept, and she is supervised 90% of the time when she is out by us (we both go outside regularly to smoke and she only goes out for small trips). Also our 6 yr old male and our friends 1 yr old male who we are looking after are always trotting around with her so if any male tries anything I think they will be shooed away pretty promptly!

Oh Felix

Don't want to sound like I'm telling you what to do but pleeeeease don't let her out any more until she has been spayed.  Don't know what else to say.  You will know when she comes into season me by which time it will almost certainly be too late.

They become very very affectionate and sometimes start calling (loud miaowing) altho our two girls didn't do the calling bit.

Sorry this may be a stupid question, but we have a 4~ month old female and I'm wondering how you can tell that they have come into season. We let her out around the flats (it's reasonably quiet, grassy, no main road, and we leave the door open for her) but I know there are many unneutered males around so we have to get her done before she goes on heat.

Thanks :)

Nicter - cats can get pregnant even while not in season, so she needs to be kept in till neutered.
Please spay your cat

I thought most vets did them around 4 months which sounds far more sensible to me.

I have never had to go through this cos all my cats were neutered when I got them and admittedly Misa who is a huge boy has a little head and also very dainty legs and paws........I suppose he was done earlt cos he may have had a much bigger head otherwise but he is so Gorgeous I wouldnt have him any other way.  ;D

Dont tell Gary  :shify: :shify:

Gill - it`s interesting how she changed her mind when I said about the face thing! My BSH Freddie was done aged 9 months but he hadnt come into maturity by then, and I didnt want to leave it any longer. His face is beautiful too.

When I got Lily I asked about getting her done aged 5 months as she was a real monkey about getting out. (She got stranded on a shed roof aged 14 weeks and it took me a few hours to locate her!)  :naughty:They said then they prefered to leave it to 6 months to spay her, but if I had had a male kitten of the same age, they would have done her at 5 months and him at 6. Can see the logic in that, but surely she could be caught by a stray tom just as easily?

After the shed "incident" I tried to keep her in but she found out how to operate the cat flap when it was set on "in only"! Keeping her upstairs during the day whilst I was out just frustrated the pants off her and she became very distressed. Then when she came downstairs, she was determined to get out having being confined all day. Eventually I persuaded them and had her done at 5 months. It was easier for me as I was off work over Christmas, and wanted to get her done before I went back in Jan.

Poor Gary is blissfully unaware of the plans for next week :sneaky:

Both our girls came into season at just under 5 months altho they are moggies not NFCs ( :Luv: :Luv: :Luv: ).

I thought that was pretty normal.  Vet spayed them at 5 1/2 months.

Ahhhhhhhhhhh so thats the reasoning, pleased you have an early appointment  ;D

Actually its not a good enough reason and if thats the only reason they are delaying the op, then should at least tell people, cos many just would not understand.

Funnily enough, I had the same discussion with a vet nurse last night about Gary.  They offer a free 5 month check so we went along. I asked if he can be neutered yet. She said they like to leave it until they are 6 months, even though his bits are all there.  He still has his baby teeth and she thought he may have them for a few more months - couldnt see why this should be a deciding factor.

I explained about fostering kittens and young cats, and I didnt want him to start paying them too much attention, but she was still relucatant. She did admit he is big enough, and bigger than some females they have in to spay. I then said I wasnt bothered if he didnt get a big "moon" face, and she promptly changed her tune so I guess  lots of owners prefer to leave it for astetic reasons! He is booked in for a week`s time.

I agree with everything dabs has put and just want to add one more thing ...... be EXTRA SUPER vigilant when opening and closing doors ... a calling queen is one determined fast little thing .... she wants out and the first opportunity she gets she will try to make a break for it.

~Good luck and fingers crossed you can get her "sorted" ASAP for yours and her sake  ;)

I think your vet is just downright stoopid!

Personally I would look for a better and more uptodate vet

Personally I think your vet is being a bit nit picky. After all in the states they do them at 8 weeks old and do not appear to have any issues. I would find another vets. I know over here with the boys they like to wait till a couple of little things have dropped, but I have had queens done at 5 months old and had no issues. Kittens usually lose their baby teeth at about 2-4 months, so I have no idea as to why your vet will not do her untill she has a full set of adult teeth.

Options are:

Find another vet who is not as fussy

Hormone injection to knock her off call

Go and live in the shed, till she is done!

Seriously it is not nice for her to be going thru this, I would question your vet as to his reasons.

Had Poppet booked into vets to be spayed mid Sept as our vet isnt happy spaying before 6 months old. Well .. yesterday she came into season at 5 months and 1 week. Rang vet who wanted us to keep her in until booked appt in Sept. With 3 other cats and the knowledge she can do this again in another 2-3 weeks we asked for appt to be bought forward. Hes agreed to see her next Thursday (starved previously) and will spay only if she has her adult teeth and is of a certain size !! When do they get full set of adult teeth ? ( shes mainly norwegian forest cat who we,d read mature late .. hmmm dont think thats right ) We are keeping her locked in by the way .. Anyone got any earplugs perleeeasee
