Will check - someone in West Hollywood said it was illegal, so someone came on and said it is the whole of California.

Desley, maybe I'm confused but I just read one of the links given below and it says that declawing in California is illegal for BIG cats but not yet for domestic cats.

California's an odd place. They've banned ferrets from being kept as pets in that state as far as I know. Good for them on the declawing front, though!
So true!!!LOL

I think it is a wonderful law!  It is an awful thing to happen to a furry!

When I first took Jasmine in I posted on yahoo answers asking what I needed to buy for her, and all these people answered saying not to have her declawed. I'd never heard of that being done. And good thing too, I've looked it up since and it's so cruel  :(

Where did you read that, Desley?  Is it a new law or just a little known one?  Good on California I say.  I wonder if/how they enforce it.

I do, although there are a lot of impracticalities, such as checking the cats have been done - easy with males, but not with females. But then, I think there should be something done to females so if they come into a rescue, we can easily find out if htey have been spayed - could be as simple as a couple of coloured dots on their skin after being done, which would only be noticed by a quick shave.

West Hollywood have also passed a law that it is illegal to own an unneutered pet unless you are a registered breeder, dont know how they are going to police it

Just read that it is illegal to declaw in the state of California - appears to be the only state where it is illegal at the mo, but at least one of the states in the US has pushed this, fingers crossed the rest follow suit very soon. Also, West Hollywood have also passed a law that it is illegal to own an unneutered pet unless you are a registered breeder, dont know how they are going to police it, but fingers crossed it works and shows a reduction in the amount of cats and dogs being born each year.
