Very distressing indeed and wondered what one of thos was and thinkingh it would be a bit bright and largish but was this below LOL

Reckon they equivalent to our sparrow maybe?

About the size of your magpie, Gill. Our magpie is the size of your crow ... it gets confusing. The 'wattles' are yellow fleshy strips that hang down either side of their beak (you can just see them in that photo).

Oh God,  shrews,  we get loads of them and because the cats dont like the taste they are normally alive and dropped on our kitchen floor,  this is then followed by a mad shrew hunt by me and Steve to get the poor thing out and back into the fields,   mine dont tend to go for birds but I guess living on a farm they have a lot of choice with Mice,  Shrews,  Rabbits, Squiggle etc,  birds are too much effort.  We did get a dead bat last year and was very shocked to see that the killing of a bat carries a huge fine,  unfortunatley Teabag only has 10p a week pocket money so he could be paying for a long time ! :naughty:

Little Toots (Gwynnie  :evillaugh: ) is bringing in baby frogs at the rate of several a day at the mo, and the other evening Lacie came running in from the garden making the most peculiar noise, then I realised it was because she was trying to meow and hold a field mouse at the same time LOL! Anyway, field mouse was still alive and I got it off her, then traipsed up to top of garden (100ft long, pitch black  ) to let it free in the 'wild' area.

I didnt edit your post honest,,,,well I mean I did cos presses modify and not quote by accident, sorry.

I actually posted this:

Thats where I put the shrew but it then climbed back out and went under a fir tree......sigh

Misa was only hiding down the garden a bit from there having been sent away a number of times while I was protecting the shrew!

Smidgen murdered a yellow wattle bird the other day - it really is distressing when it happens ... :(

  Oh, what a shame  :(

Its not a good time of year to be a baby bird, little  mouse or so on ....

I think most of us quail somewhat at the thought of being the one to do the final deed ....

I can - but I HATE doing it  :'(

Vet was probably the best option

Got up yesterday at 6am to feed the monsters (OH's job but his birthday) only to find Dinah had brought in the most beautiful baby bird bleeding badly and still alive.  I so wish I had just sent her back out with it but held on till 9am and brought it to vet to do the kindest thing.  It was heartbreaking  :'(

Have to say I was disgusted with myself that I couldn't bring myself to end it's suffering somehow.  I hope I will be braver next time.

Hope the shrew survived OK Gill

Awww   you did your best, which is all anyone can do.  Poor shrews do come in for a battering, as cats on the whole dont think they taste very nice ....

I took a tiny fieldmouse from one of my cats, once, in the days when I had young, outside cats.

The poor little mouse promptly died in the middle of my hand - it barely filled my palm  :'(

Its hard when cat-nature and human conflict

Lets hope the shrew stays safe

Please consider the harder to home cats in rescue.

Misa and Sasa brought a live shrew in, turns out it was bleeding a bit anf think one back leg damaged.

Rescued it and put in a felix box but thought cos its very warm in here it would like somethiung to drink.

As its raining i brought in some wet grass for it but it panicked when i put iy in the box......seems they dont like wet grass.......sigh

I set it free at bottom of garden among long grrass but it got out of there very fast and went alonf the lawn to under a little fur tree, trouble is Misa followed me and is hunting him and now Sasa has gone out too.

Dont think my rescue has been a success and apparently shrews live underground........so dont know where they got him from.

heartbreaking  :(
